So I know I'm probably one of the few people here who use a MacBook as a daily driver, but I was just as dismayed as linus was perplexed at the new MacBook Pro. Now, we're still waiting on his review, and while we do, I found a really interesting perspective on the whole "all USB C all the time" thing that is so controversial, and I figured LTT would be the community to give some interesting perspective/discussion on the issue. The article in question is titled "The new MacBook Pro is kind of great for hackers." https://medium.com/@ageitgey/the-new-macbook-pro-is-kind-of-great-for-hackers-64c1c577a4d2#.wgp9kurrz So, even though this has been talked half to death recently, how do you guys feel about any computer being pure USB C? I'll put my own opinion in the thread below. I debated putting this thread under laptops, peripherals, and news, but the issue really spans the gamut.

Hi, I recently bought a laptop with a USB 3.1 gen 2 connector. I'm now looking for a good hub solution for my desk. I have a monitor, keyboard and mouse. The problem is I can't seem to find a USB C hub with a displayport and at least two USB connectors. Has anyone here any experience with these adapters or hubs? Also I considered connecting multiple adapters, so from usb C to usb 3.0 + usb c and then another usb c to display port. Would that work? One last thing, My budget isn't that high, so most docks are out of the picture. (50-ish $) Thanks,

Hello. I currently have an Alienware 15 R3 and was wondering if I could buy one dock that I could connect all of my desk stuff to, and only use my TB3 port. This is what I had in mind- https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Charging-MacBook-ChromeBook-Aspire/dp/B01DTQZTX4/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1477619224&sr=8-10&keywords=usb+c&refinements=p_89%3AAukey Problem is, I don't know if this would bottleneck my wireless card(Killer 1535 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1). I love my speeds as they are and don't want to bottleneck them. So, would it slow down my ethernet speed AT ALL?

After reading this blog post on USB C and seeing it start popuping up on almost all new phones and devices. Plus having Thunderbolt 3 added into the mix. We are going to be seeing a lot of confusion on this new connector. I think it is time for a new/updated Tech quickie on USB-C, hopefully help people figure out that just because it plugs in doesn't mean it will actually work, and in fact could damage something.

I think that Nvidia and AMD should focus on having USB type C instead of HDMI or DVI considering USB-C is the future. If more and more displays would start using usb-c this would be awesome. Imagine having only usb type c for everything. Not having to find the right dongle or the right cable for your monitor but only having to use one type! What do you think?

Finally got a Juiced Systems hub because a lack of a SD card reader and an ethernet port on the Razer Blade was driving me crazy. USB and HDMI ports work without issue, but for some reason the 1Gb ethernet port is not picking up an IP address. I might just be blanking on a necessary step, but am at a loss at the moment. Again, I don't think the hub is the problem but cannot tell what else it could be.

So I just saw something neat in this Unbox Therapy video. He showed video out over USB C. Is this a native Android feature or is this just something that Huawei does?

Hello, So I have a laptop with an nVidia 1060, great laptop but I would use an external monitor connected via HDMI. Today I decided to buy two more of the same exact monitor and since they only connect with HDMI or VGA, I obviously went with HDMI. I then got two converters so that I could plug the other two monitor's HDMI cables into my laptop's mini Display Port and the other via USB C. This is great and it works but I have one issue. My laptop screen runs off of the Intel integrated graphics and is not recognized by my nVidia 1060 but will run games off the GPU. Now when I had one external monitor it would run off the GPU. However, now I added the other two monitors and the HDMI and Mini Display Port ones are running off the GPU while the one connected via USB C says it is running off of the Intel graphics, this then prevents me from using nVidia's Span displays with surround option so that I can play across all three monitors. I guess my question is this: is there a way to change my monitor connected via USB C to run off my nVidia 1060 and not my Intel Integrated graphics? or is this a hardwired issue like I found out with my laptop's screen, which I found I couldn't switch to run off the GPU because it was hardwired that way... so maybe the USB C is the same way? If so is there a way I can run my third monitor off the 1060, I only have HDMI, mini display port, USB C, and two USB 3.0 port options.

Hey everyone, So I want to get a new external hard drive. My desktop has a usb c 3.1 port where as my laptop (razer blade 2017) has a thunder 3 port. Would I be able to use the hard drive between these 2 port if it's the hard drive is setup for thunderbolt 3? I've been trying to find the answer on google but can't. Thanks in advanced!

Hi I have recently acquired a laptop battery pack. I also have a USB-C enabled laptop I would like to charge. Now I wondered. There is no USB-C cable included in the box, but I can set the voltage on the charger manually up to 20V. If I would solder a USB-C connection and set it to 20V, would it charge? I know USB-C uses a communication protocol to "negotiate" the charge specs. And I'm afraid to fry my components. Would this work in the "old-dumb-way" too? Or will I damage stuff? Alternatively, is there a circuit that can accept 12V-20V (no matter what for me) and communicate with the USB-C chip to negotiate the specs? This would help me out a lot

I'm looking for a unicorn. A 60W USB-C PD charger that supports up to 15V3A and 20V3A, so that I could use with my Nintendo Switch + dock and charge my laptop using the same cable. Seems like most of the 60W USB C PD chargers don't output 15V and the lower wattage ones don't play nice with my laptop. I found the Orico TSL-1U supports all of these, but have not been able to find a single review on the product, nor have I been able to find it outside of bulk sale (also don't want to be the first person to test it). Are there any other 60W USB C PD chargers that support 15V3A and 20V3A on the market?

Hello everyone, I plan to buy a MacBook (please don’t judge the brand, I just prefer macOS for everything except gaming) and I am therefore looking for a USB-c Dongle/hub. I want at least one type A port, as well as one HDMI port. Ethernet and USB-c Pass through are a plus, but not needed. My problem is that I am not able to find a dongle that supports 4K (or even 1440p) they all support max 30Hz, or 1080@60. Is it a limitation of USB 3.1 gen 1? or just cheap brands? And I know the thunderbolt 3 docks supports everything I want and more, but they all cost about 300€ and/or require external power

Yes, thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3, as in using the accessories normally compatible with a MacBook ( pro ) 2017, with a mac-mini. I'm aware of the speed limit and everything but I was wondering because all the vids and articles are on about tb2 peripherals being used on a tb3 device, not the other way around. I'm curious how this would work considering the differences between the two of them.

Hi everyone, loving the ASUS Zenbook 3 for almost 7 months now, and I've come back from usb-c dongle hell with one quesion: Is there any good usb c or thunderbolt 3 hub that drives two external monitors AND has passthrough charging? Or is there any usb c/thunderbolt 3 hub that offers a true daisy-chainable usb c port instead of just power passthrough? The closest I have found so far are:Arc Hub by Bourgedesign (kind of unproven brand, not sure if ships yet costs upwards of 100$) has HDMI & mDP which can supposedly be used simultaneouslyPlugable's thunderbolt3 dock as well as owc are professional grade, 300$+ solutions which are overkill for my needs, and do not have simple video outputs, so they would require other adapters to use their usb c ports.Plugable's triple display docking station is a strong contender, and I might end up buying this one, but it costs at least 200$ in my area, does not make full use of thunderbolt 3 capabilities, and I dont need 3 external monitors. plus it does not charge over usb c so it is a step backwards in terms of charging cables.Any insights on this?

Hello Hello, I have an Alienware 15 r2 and when I get home I will like to connect all my extra peripherals with only 1 connector (thunderbolt 3 USB-C). So... I need a usb-c hub with at least 3 USBs type A (usb 2.0 will be fine, I dont need 3.0), a hdmi (1080p monitor) and an audio jack. I searched the amazon (uk) but nothing with exactly this configuration... mostly of the hubs dont have a jack connector... Do you guys know any ?

First off, I didn't know where to put this thread. I am looking for a USB type C expansion card. But it needs to have a PCIe 1x interface. I have a bunch of PCI slots, my 16x is taken my my GPU, so I only have a 1x PCIe. I don't really care about the price. Thanks for any help

Hey guys, This is my post on Razer Forum - decided to post it here also. https://insider.razer.com/index.php?threads/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-problems-rbs-8550u.50012/ --- So after over a week of very delayed emails and live chats with Razer, I have decided to post my issue here to see if the community can help or at least expose an issue to Razer that they may or may not be ignoring.I have had my laptop for just under a year now, and since it arrived I have had some very peculiar issues with the USB C port. When using a USB C / Thunderbolt dock with a mouse / kb and charger plugged in, my peripherals lose power every few seconds for a couple of seconds making it impossible to use. If the charger is not plugged in, it is perfectly fine.Like I have said above, I have been speaking with Razer about this for a couple of weeks and their only answer was to buy a Razer Core..Below are the troubleshooting steps I have completed.- BIOS and Firmware updates - Windows Updates - System recovery of the device (through the Razer recovery partition) - Multiple docks (linked below)https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B071YTQBXM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.harveynorman.com.au/alogic-usb-c-portable-super-dock-with-power-delivery-black.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/XtremeMac-Promate-Type-C-MicroSD-Ethernet/dp/B06X9LQ9ND ^^ These all had the same issue with the peripheralshttps://www.lenovo.com/au/en/access...s-usb/TP-Hybrid-USB-C-Dock- -ANZ/p/40AF0135AU (this one flat out didn't work at all) - A different 65W charger from a Lenovo device Now, this device has previously been sent off the Sydney (I live in Perth AUS) and took about a month to get back to me, the issue was not fixed even after the team in Sydney replaced the motherboard. On the RBS product pafe, they advertise the following about the Thunderbolt 3 port/"Meet Thunderbolt™ 3. It's twice as fast asThunderbolt 2 and more versatile to boot.It connects to any display, port or peripheraldevice — allowing you to add moreutility to your laptop with zero hassle"One would assume that this is false advertising as the Razer support team have told me the complete opposite about this statement (as shown at the bottom of this post)I have been advised against using third party docks as they won't work with the RBS (which I think is rubbish).Anyways, have a read of the chat history and if you have any issues with your blade, good look getting any decent support.Edit: Just realised I am unable to attach a txt file to the post for some reason so have just pasted the chat below.--- (this did get escalated, however, I did not hear from the escalation team for 2 and a half days)

I saw Linus' video on USB-C durability in comparison to Micro USB-B. I was wondering about how its durability holds up against USB-A.

So recently I bought a new Huawei Mate 20,it is a great phone without any faults but the other day I tried plugging in my HTC USB-C Headphones into the phone only to realise that the phone doesnt play audio through the headphones, not only that but it doesnt even recognize them as headphones. The headphones work propertly on my friends Huawei Mate 10 so i belive that its not a Headphone problem. Does anybody maybe know whats causing the problem?

I am currently searching for a handsfree device with decent microphone (something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Plantronics-Voyager-Wireless-Bluetooth-Headset/dp/B00DQ5NU76) Only condition is that it has to have USB C charging. I have searched this desperately but only so few manufacturer mention this on their product descriptions. Does anyone have tips which device would have USB C charging.

Hi. I'll soon be upgrading my rig with a MSI MPG X570 Gaming Pro Carbon WIFI. The thing is that the case that I own (the Corsair Crystal 680X RGB White) has front USB C and the motherboard does not have a connector for it. So I was thinking if maybe there excisted some adapters for it. Something like USB 3.0 to USB C. Thanks in advance
