So here is the story I wanted to install kubuntu on my 2013 Alienware m17x and I did it successfully it works fine. but during the installation it gave me a waning like this: "Force UEFI Installation? This machines's firmware has started this installer in UEFI mode but it looks like there maybe existing operating systems already installed using BIOS compatibility mode, If you continue to install Debian in UEFI mode,it might be difficult to reboot into any BIOS-mode operating system" I just wanna now did I screw up my laptop and if can I fix it or should I leave it as is because I am very happy with kubuntu I love it, it is amazing.

Hello Forum, I'm looking to speed things up for my boot time, the main reason being is that my system "posts" three times basically before entering the boot-stage and loading windows, which usually takes around 5 seconds (Samsung 950 Pro M.2). So how can I make sure that it's not posting for that long? If you have any idea please let me know What I've done so far: Installed the latest driver for the M.2 Drive from Samsung. Initialized Fast Boot also for next boot in case of AC Power Loss. Boot priority is as followed: Windows Boot Manager, Samsung SSD 950 and 3rd Samsung 850 EVO. There's something called POST Delay Time, which delays the post obviously to make it easier to access the bios, should I tweak that? It's currently set to 3 seconds. Any other options that needs to be fiddled with? Thanks in advance

So I'm REALLY confused tight now. There's so much to ask but i don't know where to begin, so I guess I start from the beginning... I recently bought an upgrade to my PC and ended up with this: Ryzen 5 1600 w/ wraith spire cooling MSI B350 Gaming pro carbon Corsair vengence LPX DDR4 3200MHz CL16 16GB MSI gtx 960 (this wasn't upgraded) Crucial BX100 256GB SSD (This wasn't upgraded) WD Caviar Blue 500GB 7200RPM (This wasn't upgraded) The rest I think is not needed but tell me if you want it. And here is a list of my problems/concerns/confusion and what made me go crazy: 1. I don't know what is Windows 10 WHQL support 2. I installed new BOX windows 10 64/32 bit USB but on the non UEFI mode because of this error: windows can only be installed to gpt disks 3. If I switched the whql support, would I be able to install the UEFI windows 10? 4. Does this have to do with my board not recognizing my DVD drive plugged into SATA3 port and that I can see 4 USB drives in windows though they don't exist? (E:/ F:/ G:/ and H:/) 5. does this have to do with my audio problem? 6. Should I update my bios to v15? I have v14 7. Should I reinstall windows but this time with WHQL support enabled and with UEFI mode? (If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's that the USB windows stick has 2 install modes: w/ and w/o UEFI and I don't know anything else about it) 8. Why can't I turn my ram to 3200MHz though the board can read it's XMP profile, changes it to the profile but still shows ram running 2133MHz (the ram is tested for 3200MHz by the manufacturer on their website (search for CMK16GX4M2B3200C16R) and is even samsung B-Die) 9. And last but not least, Can I kill myself now? Because I hate this sh*t and I'm going crazy. If it sounds confusing to you, it's because it is. AMA if you need more explanation over this situation. and please tell me quickly if I should reinstall, because I don't want to settle down too much and have to format everything again. EDIT: Audio is solved, trying the reinstall tomorrow morning, will update my status EDIT2: DVD is working now, I had a bad SATA cable EDIT3: reinstalled windows, did all the stuff you told me to and most of the problems are fixed. I also updated bios which significantly improved post time and now after leaving bios it turns on and off a few times but eventually boots up. Above you can see the remaining problems.

Hi guys, Last night i reformatted my pc and i installed windows 10 and its booted via UEFI. And i think its version is the oldest. I can't update my o.s due to internet problems in our isp. so I'm stuck with the old build number. But i found out that i downloaded the windows anniversary update via media creation tool. I just wanna know if i update the windows using the updated that i download using media creation tool will change my windows from booting to UEFI? because last time i did that changed my windows boot from UEFI to Legacy. Can you help me guys? i really appreciate it. Thanks.

So I closed my SSD to my NVMe and even though my NVMe was supposed to be GPT, because my SSD (Win 10 OS) had MBR, it converted the NVMe to MBR. I tried using the mbr2gpt tool in windows\system32 but kept getting an error. After looking deeper into it, I realized it was because my BIOS mode was in legacy (verified in System Information). How do I change this without reinstalling Windows 10 from a USB? I already changed in my motherboard's BIOS from legacy to UEFI but this doesn't seem to affect the BIOS mode in Windows. I'm pretty sure this is all that's preventing me from converting my NVMe from MBR to GPT.

Hey guys, I have a HP 440 g3 and a new problem has cropped up. Every time I switch on my computer I get a POST error saying that the hard drives have changed since last boot and the new config will be saved for the next time. I boot into Windows 10 fine and shut it down to see the same message next time I switch it on. Is there something I am doing wrong ? PS. The system is one year old so the CMOS battery is new, plus the BIOS is not resetting each time.

Pardon the noob question, please bear with me. as I've no experience with UEFI Boot / Windows etc. Only till recently I've move to Windows 10. So I'm changing a new Mobo, I'm planning to do a PROPER and CLEAN install of Windows 10 again to avoid any compatibility issues. When I wanted to Format my SSD which is the OS installed. I notice there are 3 Partitions which I didn't make. One was the SSD itself, another is System Reserved I believe, around 100MB ( Couldn't remember exactly ) another I think it's for the UEFI which is about 450MB So I was wondering, what should I do. Do I Delete all the Partitions or do I just Format all three of them and Re-Install Windows ?? ( I have my HDD disconnected while doing Windows install to avoid OS installing the Boot files into the HDD like my previous system....seriously FKed up there )

I have a Ryzen 1600 system on the way and it's already built and properly running 16GB (2x8GB) of memory set to 3000 MHz. If I add 16GB more of the same memory in the remaining two empty slots for 32GB total, will I need to enter the UEFI to enable XMP for all of the RAM sticks to get the full 3000 MHz, or will the system simply use the same XMP setting as before? This is my first custom-built system and first Ryzen system. AsRock AB350M Pro4 Micro ATX motherboard (3.1 UEFI/Bios update) Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) 288-pin DDR4-3000 MHz SDRAM

Hi, Last week i assembled my new workstation with components: Corsair CMK64GX4M4A2666C16 4x16GB Intel Core i7-7820X 3.60 GHz LGA 2066 CPU Box Zotac NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB AMP Edition GDDR5 Graphics Card Be Quiet BK019 Dark Rock Pro3 Heatsink and Fan Samsung 960 PRO M.2-2280 512GB PCI Express 3.0 x4 NVMe Gigabyte Intel X299 AORUS Gaming 3 Chipset LGA 2066 DDR4 Be Quiet 850W Power Zone Power Supply Unit The workstation was really unstable on Linux boot i get CPU errors. I updated BIOS to last release and boot installation with flags acpi=off intel_pstate=disable that give me option to install operating system. For start tried ubuntu stable version 16.04? That version all the time crashes on installations. After this tried 17.04 which is development release still unstable after about 10 tries installed correctly. With the kernel flags acpi=ht that allows me use hyper threading. All the time i get problems with crashing applications or even stack PC. dmesg show nothing only some info about crashed application. There was issue when google chrome crashed i can't run it again computer needs reboot. Some looks like memory issue? I did everything like was in motherboard manual. Memory setup in BIOS "best stability". CPU never was overclocked. lm-sensors showing crazy temperature 29 Celsius on CPU so looks ok no heating. Next issue when i tried to change distribution, because i think the hardware is too new for old Linux Kernel in Ubuntu tried to install UEFI keys for ARCH Linux in BIOS don't detect secure mode... My computer after reboot - (save setting on bios) stop responding. I clear the CMOS taken off battery for one hour. Here is result: Video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8ZYcC3b7RbDUm8wcFgzb0tjZWM/view?usp=sharing I just sent CPU back, what is wrong with Intel, we just joking in office the provision my workstation takes me halt hour. but takes hours and died without touching. Summary: last BIOS, 5 beeps, no temperature jumps - temperature too low? No overclock Somebody can help me? EDIT: @DildorTheDecent I know there is issue with CPU or Motherboard currently sent back CPU Other notes: The computer on boot linux sometimes got stuck and no react form reset button. I think was BIOS before upgrade

Hi everyone, I recently bought some extra RAM for my Medion pc I've been using for 5 years now. I've put two sticks of Kingston KVR1333D3N9K3/6G in my pc, but it only reports them as 2 gig sticks, so 4 gigs in total. That's exactly the amount of RAM I've been using all the time. Memtest86+ reports the modules as Kingston 99U5458 2 gig sticks (not the brand and type I used before), but my modules dont look like 99U5458 at all. Im using a MS-7848 motherboard, which supports up to 16 GB of RAM. Anyone ideas of what I'm doing wrong? I bought the sticks from another dude over the internet, could I possibly be scammed? I highly doubt it, as the sticks seem legit.

Well, the other day the PC in my sig crashed while watching YouTube. Upon restarting, it did not show an image on the monitor, after a couple of days of troubleshooting by myself I am at a loss, because, as the title says, when I switch over to the integrated graphics it shows up just fine in the UEFI, Windows 10 refuses to boot properly but works in safe mode where the GPU is also detected as a 7900 series gpu, and, when I went to flash the bios, ATIFlash also had no trouble with flashing, nor did it give any errors, but the card still refuses to show an image after I switch over to it as my primary output device in the UEFI, no matter how I configure it, igpu enabled, disabled, whatever, runing it on PCIe gen 1, 2 or 3. I've not tried all of the ports because I don't have a DP monitor handy, but the other 3 do not work. My Z77 Extreme3 is on the 1.50 BIOS revision The Sapphire 7950 DualX got flashed from the original BIOS to 015.040.000.001.000000, and back to original, and back to 015.040.000.001.000000 I'd hate to put it in the oven or what have you, but I'll try if it really is my last resort. If that fails, would it perhaps work in CF with the other 7950 handling the output? BTW, as I currently do not have the money to buy a new GPU, which games run on HD4000 integrated graphics?

Fellow Techies, What would cause my MSIZ97S SLI Krait Edition Motherboard not to see my drives (both ssd and hdd)? I even pulled them out of my case (Thermaltake Level 10 GT) to make sure it wasn't the sata plan. Same thing happened. The board would pop up an A2 code and hang there forever. Then when I could get it to go into the bios I would check and the drives wouldn't even show, not even my Blueray drive. Can anyone explain this to me? Should I look at getting a new board? The bios is up to date. It happens repeatedly then nothing for a day to maybe a few days then it starts back up again rearing it's ugly head.

So I have a Lenovo 100-15iby 80MJ that's out of warranty, so I decided to try Linux on it (works great, unless you leave it doing a distro upgrade overnight and a power outage happens and the battery dies, requiring a reinstall)So I go to re-install and I try and boot from the USB, and it says "Boot from USB <Verbatim Store-N-Go> has failed". This raised an eyebrow, and I thought it might be a bad thumb stick, so I try another, a Kingston drive. I load up the boot menu and the option for USB says "EFI USB <Verbatim Store-N-Go>", which is weird because any other time I've tried to boot from this Kingston drive it said the name of the Drive next to the USB option. There's also no boot from DVD option on the boot manager either.Tried to boot using Legacy mode, but that only brought up the UEFI boot menu, it was at this time that I noticed that the UEFI Bios isn't saving settings. So I take the laptop apart, pop the CMOS battery out, hold the power button for 15 sec to hard-reset, then power on/off for good measure, put the battery back in, closed the laptop up and powered it back on.And the Settings were still there! GRRRR...At this point, I'm thinking the CMOS battery is dead (which if this was the case, I should have been able to clear the settings, but no dice), or there's something wrong with the Bios or Mobo.I can't revert the Bios because the setting for allowing a reversion is disabled and can't be enabled to allow the flash.

I got myself a second 240gb SSD and I noticed that the system actually takes slightly longer to boot into Windows in RAID. It hangs on a black screen for a few extra seconds before booting. I have a PNY CS900 240gb and my new one is an Intel 2500 pro 240gb. I also have a slower write speed on the Intel which I'm not sure if it's normal. It gets about 460+ read and around 200-350 varying on crystaldiskmark where the PNY gets the same 460+ read and write speeds. In RAID I'm getting 800+ read and 400+ write speeds. These are all sequential tests. I also have the 2 SSD's plugged into port 1 and 2 of my ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming motherboard which is the SATA express port also and I have a 2tb HDD in port 3 and a DVD burner in port 4. Are these normal write speeds for the 2500 pro and is it normal to get the black screen hang for a few extra seconds compared to a single SSD? With a single SSD the spinner on the UEFI screen does 1-2 turns and windows is on but this seems to not even show the spinner and get by that ASUS screen really fast but then go black for about 10 seconds then show the welcome screen for 2-3 seconds where the single SSD usually doesn't even see the welcome screen because it boots so fast by the time the display driver loads it's on the desktop already.

I am buying a GTX 750 ti (Palit )for an old prebuilt desktop (HP Pavilion p6557c) which uses a Pegatron M2N86-LA motherboard. Upon doing further reading, I have read on other forums that the 750 ti can have compatibility issues with old HP OEM motherboards due to being limited only to Legacy BIOS. Since learning this, I have decided on obtaining a used Asrock N68-VS3-FX (socket AM3+) motherboard. My question is: 1. Will my GTX 750 ti work on the Asrock N68-VS3 FX? since I am not sure if it uses UEFI nor does it have a list of supported GPUs. here's a link to it's product page: http://www.asrock.com/mb/nvidia/n68-vs3 fx/ Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

I have UEFI, i know how to change the boot logo on Legacy. But i have no clue how to do it on UEFI?? HELP!!

Hi, so my old drive (adata sx900 128g) was able to boot with Legacy+UEFI enabled with no problem. I now upgraded this ssd to crucial mx300 525gb and I firstly had a problem with booting. With Legacy+UEFI, it showed only a black screen saying "reboot and select proper boot device or insert a boot media in selected boot device and press a key". Nothing happened when I pressed a key. After restarting and changing boot mode to UEFI, it boots normally, a bit slower though. Is this just my problem or I am missing something?

Hi All, My grandfather recently got a new desktop that is installed with windows 10 (which he likes) to replace his windows 7 computer from 2008. He has had conflicting help from several people in regard to transfering data (because he knows all the folder names, programs, etc in his old computer). Rather than transfer data, I simply added his old hard drive to his new computer (so the new computer now has 2 HDD's). Now, he can access all of his old files from file explorer> my computer>OS:F. However, I (and He) would like to dual boot his new computer with both windows 10 (which is installed on the new hard drive) and windows 7 (which is installed on the older hard drive, which is now in the same computer). I attempted to use EasyBCD, but his new computer's windows 10 installation was running in UEFI mode, which caused several problems when attempting to dual boot windows 7 (installed under legacy mode). How should/can I fix this so that I can use a bootloader to let him pick between windows 7 and windows 10? (The ones he already has installed with programs and files). NOTES: -These are not custom built machines, both are Dell Studio XPS with proprietary hardware/drivers (for the most part). One from 2008 with a 1st gen i7, the other from 2016 with a 6th gen-skylake i7. -The reason for dual booting is because he adores windows 7, but likes windows 10 and is slowly becoming more familiar with it. He often needs to go back to 7 for certain tasks. -He is NOT computer literate in any way. -Switching the bios from UEFI to Legacy allows me to boot into windows 7, but I can't boot into windows 10 (Changing the boot order yields the error "No OS Detected"). -Currently, the only way I can switch back and forth between 10 and 7 (that I know of) is to switch the BIOS back and forth between legacy and UEFI. Thanks in advance!

My monitor just says "Entering power save mode" and I think that my computer must be in the bios scince when I press the "reset" button it goes straight to windows. If you have any ideas on what might be wrong plz just gimmie your opinions! Thanks!

i have had this POS pendo pad for a while, barely ever used it as it had windows 8 on it and was as fun to use as cheese grating your genitals off to use for anything (other than a paper weight). so a while ago i had the idea, put an older android on it. so the boot disc with android on it went fine, the booting up the boot disc, check. installing it.... and well half way thru, battery shit the bed. kaput. so charging up, 100%, turn on the 4port usb hub with Disc and Keyboard bad on the tablet... now it doesn't like the 4port hub with usb n keyboard. its stuck with a grub loader on it, that does a whooooole lot of nothing. and i would really like to either finish the install OR somehow have the screen Repurposed into a micro Monitor on a HDMI lead. anyone got any ideas on how to do this. im i think the micro monitor could be awesome to have fixed up in my ute to use one something else. OR if it gets android on it it can still end up in the ute as a MP3 Player with a screen i can actually see my music on.
