I hear a lot of different ways you can do this. Some people say you can create an image and load that image onto a new drive, and then you're done. You don't even need to install Windows. Then some people say you can just back up files/folder without anything else and restore them later. How do you do these restores? Do you do then when you're installing the OS or after? Thank you

Hi. I will have to reinstall win 7 since I am getting a new CPU (i5 4460 from some fm1 athlon). Installation itself is not a problem. Been there, done that. However I would like to have an easier way to restore all of the non Windows stuff. Files, settings, saved browser stuff etc. So I basically only would refresh windows for new mobo and cpu but after that have it as it was more or less. Drivers and stuff I can reinstall. Any ideas? May be some kind of software? - Also may be you have some suggestions how to make it easier in future. I have my os on ssd. So at the same time moving what can be moved away from ssd should make ssd last longer. At least the folders that actively change (write - delete) files.

Hello. I recently just made a thread about an Irremovable Mobo Screw Is it possible to restore a such badly took care of case to the point of washing it. The case is really good though i cannot replace the front panels, i can remove the old stickers. I have removed the Standoff that was irremovable with pliers so.. .technically clean, appearance? It is filled with cobwebs and dust i have a can of spray paint, matte black. The rear I/O Panel has been removed. Questions: I wanna wash it, will that short the circuit out, the circuit of the front I/O plugs? Advice before i spray paint it? Oh this is not about cases but ill put it in here: How to wash dried out Thermal Paste, THICK dried out thermal paste without scratching the metal surface on the CPU. If the case turns out good ill post it here Few notes: The case CAN BE DISASSEMBLED FULLY, I can remove the top, bottom, sides, and front panels of the case to the point where it is just BONES. No brands on this case The location of the PSU is old school: Top. Thats all. Hope you guys can help me, i really want to use this case for my next build!

I have an Alienware X51 R2 that came with Windows 8, that means if I use Alienrespawn to create my rescue USB, every time I reset it to factory state I will need to go through all the updates and re-download Windows 8.1 I am so done with this and disappointed that Dell doesn't even provide a free all around, user friendly backup software. In case my system crashes again, can anyone suggest me how I can create a bootable drive that restores my OS to my CURRENT state, or at least windows 8.1 not 8? I've bought a 16GB USB just for this purpose, plus a 1TB external hard drive. Thx

Hi to you all, I am having trouble with restoring a database. I was given a PostgreSQL database, which was only being backed up as a copy of the /data folder. Now, the machine running the database was physically tackled a the disks are damaged. I only possess the backup of the /data folder. The database was set up on a Windows machine, ver. PostgreSQL 8.2. I tried simply installing PostgreSQL ver. 8.2, created acccount with the same name and replaced the /data directory with my backup, but I ended up being unable to start the database service, even if I switched back to the original /data created during installation. I scanned through all openable config files and changed the path to point to the right directory, because it was originally installed elsewhere. Still nothing. Any ideas? Thanks

The revert to windows 8.1 option does not show in settings. I have tried everything, reinstall Windows, BIOS settings etc. Geniuses of the forums pls help! P.S. I know that HP has a restore option but I don't want to pay if I don't have to. -DraconicOdin Edit: This page allows you to download 8.1 onto a disk drive.

Hi. I can't seem to be able to install a clean version of Windows 7 on a laptop that had Windows Vista. I formatted the entire drive, made a 10 GB system partition, I boot to the USB with the installation and when I want to select the volume to install it on, it says "Unable to create or find a system partition. Check setup log file for details". The list itself shows a system partition and it doesn't work drive is 150 Gb Toshiba Satellite P205-S6307 Had Windows Vista 32-bit, trying to install Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit

Hi there. Today I was working in a mate's PC for putting the things fine and at the top, so in order for checking the services that I can stop for debloating it I go to control panel-administrative tools, but send me error mesage that the folder doesn't exist. I follow the path that the error says and it's true: maybe by accident or by malwere (I think by accident according my bud's story), all the administrative tools are gone. Deleted. There is no folder with it. The administrative tools are supposed to be at "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools", but the final folder is gone. You have any sort of folders in \Programs but nothing with administrative tools or so. So the problem is: Where I can grab it again and putting where they meant to be?. A Microsoft Download link or something like that. I was thinking about installing W8.1 in another machine that I have hangin' around here, and copying the programs to the sick PC. P.S: I think that the PC specs doesn't affect anything but I will let it in the signature.

Hi, im freaking the hell out. I just restored my pc, it's at %21 and I just realized I don't have the activation key. I have the windows 8 disk, just not the activation key. Before i clicked on restore, it asked me if I wanted to restore by deleting all files, said to do this if i'm keeping my pc, which I am. But I clicked delete everything, it said to do this if I'm selling the pc. I clicked on that because I thought that maybe the first option would be more of a refresh than a factory restore. Will I need to buy windows 8 again ((((((????

Hey guys, so I decided to do a system restore on my laptop that I stopped using. This laptop has given me a ton of trouble and now that I'm trying to restore it, it's just stuck in a loading screen. I followed the directions for the restore process (there aren't that many steps) and now it's just sitting there with the little dots circling around (they're not even centered, which is just weird) on the loading background. What I want to know is, would it be safe to just kill power in it and try again? Or would that be bad and should I just wait it out? Thanks

Hey, I send a lot of faxes using the build in fax modem on my windows 7 pc. C\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows NT\MSFax\SentItems I had the "Windows NT" folder backed up, which kept my Sent and Received faxes. After I restored my PC, and moved the files back to their previous location, I cant get the old items to display in the Windows Fax and Scan Program. Anyone know a solution to this?

Hello everyone, I'm having an issue with one of the USB. It appears to be corrupt and prompts to format the USB before using it. There are important files in it and I tried recovering the file before formatting it, and that didn't work out too well. I decided that maybe after I formatted the USB, I might be able to recover some of the files that was erased; however, I can't seem to format the USB. I tried the following: 1. Right clicking and do a quick and non quick format -- no progress 2. formatting through disk management -- no progress, couldn't even delete volume. 3. using 3rd party programs to delete the partition -- no progress. What I noticed is that when I try to format the USB, it seems that the Capacity is wrong. It only shows 8.00 MB and I'm not sure if this might be the problem. Can someone help? I'm trying to do this for my sister as the USB have quite important files for school. Also, I'm not sure if I'm posting this under the right section.

Hello, i've been using Samsung's 840 Pro 128GB version SSD for quite a little while right now. i'm thinking to upgrade to the new Samsung's EVO SSD the 250GB version very soon. also i'm getting a new Motherboard with it. either an LGA 2011 or 1150 the one i'm currently using is Gigabyte Z77x-UD3H LGA 1155 Motherboard. but i've seen so much features with LGA 2011 & 1150 which suits my needs actually. but i'm really worried about how should i restore and backup my whole games & programs & data back on my hard drive? most of my files are all stored in my mechanical hard drive from Hitachi it's 600GB and my capacity. on the second partition is filled with games. (i've separated 300GB & 300GB for both volumes to organize it for games & the other for media) but the general question here which matters to me is. how should i backup my whole data including games/programs etc... to a new Motherboard & SSD and have it restored back on my hard drive. and also have it to work normally like before. without the need of re-downloading everything back again. with the same operating system. i'm running Windows 7 Professional (Legit Copy of Genuine). before you may ask, (Yes i still have the Win7 Pro Disc laying around my desk) your answer is much appreciated thanks. - Joe

Hi again, me here helplessly needing more..help?! Yesterday i was clearing out my old (android) phone to get it ready for selling, i blindly deleted all of chromes browsing data, including; history, auto-fill, saved passwords... The lot. I had forgotten that since google wants to be everywhere and make everything linked and all that rubbish, this would have the same effect on my desktops browser... I have attempted to do a system-restore on my desktop in the slight hope that it would recover the since deleted files, no luck. I can only hope that someone here can help me with this, as the passwords saved on there are my only link to a fair few websites that i have stupidly not saved elsewhere. Cheers for any help, much appreciated

Hi, so long story short... A week or so ago my system received an Windows 8 error message saying that my hard drive was going to fail soon. I "backed up" my data onto an external hard drive. Last friday my hard drive refused to boot into windows and I assumed it had died. I bought a new hard drive and thought it would be easy to restore the operating system from my "back up". I looked on my external hard drive via another computer in windows and this is what I found- I found a file that was marked with the name of my pc and labelled as RESTORE. There is also a "Windows Backup Image". I went into the bios of my motherboard and could not boot directly into the restore via my external hard drive. I also had the Windows 8 installation CD but I think I threw out the product key. (I know, stupid me). After booting into the installation CD, I tried the install windows button, it asked for the product key and because I didn't have it, I retreated. I went into the "Repair your computer" function of the installation CD and then into Troubleshoot, I then clicked advanced options and neither system restore or system image recovery seemed to pick up the Windows Backup Image on my external hard drive, even after typing in the correct file path to find them. So basically, I need help to reinstall windows and if possible, keep my previous data PLEASE HELP :'(

After numerous clean installs, and boot drive failures, I've started taking some precautions to avoid losing important files and performing clean installs of the OS. Here's what I do: Sync my personal files using FreeFileSync. Create restore points periodically (once a week using Task Scheduler) and prior to installations. Clone my boot drive using Macrium Reflect once a week. I suppose you can add another step, which is uploading all that to a cloud storage but, that's a lot gigs right there. So, I'm curious as to what steps some of you take to avoid losing data? I'd like to think that these steps make my system (almost) foolproof, unless my computer dies, along with my backup drive, and the servers that hold my data fry as well, but at that point I'd worry more about who's trying to kill me.

My friend recently restored his windows 7 ultimate to factory settings because he wanted to have a fresh start on his system. Once done, he set everything up and it was working fine, except for one thing, the pc does not allow him to connect to his home network. He uses a standard ethernet cable to connect to his router but the pc does not seem to realize that he ever plugged it in. If anyone can give us some help in fixing this, it would be great. Thanks in advance
