After an update Windows won't boot, repair or reset. It won't roll back to an older version or restore point. chkdsk returns no errors and sfc scannow returns 'recourse protection could not perform the requested operation'. I'm running Windows 10

Hi guys, I’m about to sell off my old gaming computer and I intend to securely erase my data off. I don’t have the Windows 7 installation disc with me (might have accidentally thrown it away). After some research, I found that there are two ways to write zeros on my SSD and HDD: one through diskpart and another also through command prompt but utility command like “format g: /fs:NTFS /p:2”. My question is that is it possible to use either of these two methods to write zeros on my SSD where Windows 7 is installed whereby the new user can then install either Windows 7/8/10 on the PC? Looking forward to your replies. Cheers.

Hey everyone, I am facing this issue where when I boot my system and after filling the password I am welcomed by a black screen with command prompt on it(System 32). someone told me to type in "explorer.exe" to retrieve the desktop back; and it sure did.But that was a temporary fix,now every time i boot my system i am greeted by this black screen and every time i have to type in the command to get the desktop. I have tried sfc/scannow command on cmd but did not help....there were no error. I was planning to restore my system to a safe point...but since i did not enable that feature i could not do so. I did not want to reinstall windows as it said i can keep the personal files but the apps that i installed would be deleted. I got lots of apps and games and i dont want to waste time reinstalling them, although they were installed on separate HDDs whereas the OS(WINDOWS 10) is on my SSD. Anyone who faced the same problem? can anyone fix it? Please do help me out.

Hello everyone I installed W10 and stupidly chose the wrong disk for MBR to GPT. I did it during installation via diskpart - clean - convert gpt. I already tried Remo Recover and EaseUS Data Recovery. Both did an OK job, but both left A LOT of "lost" files. Files that lost folder structure or got renamed. Is there any other program you recommend I try? It's a one terabyte disk, single partition, almost completely full. Thanks in advance!

Hi guys ! So , I've mistakenly restored over 200 files from the recycle bin . Problem is , I can't remember which files , they've been in the recycle bin since ages , so , just knowing the original location doesn't help at all. Is there a way to find out which files exactly were restored , locate them and delete them again ? Thanks in advance !

I just bought an x570 board and a Ryzen 9. I'm upgrading from x99. I want to be able to move my data and hopefully software as seamlessly as possible as I have about 300-400 pieces of software installed and it would take forever to reinstall everything. What would be the best course of action for me to upgrade this with as little headache as possible? Is there a way to back up my instance of windows with software and restore to it after the upgrade? All of data and software live on C:// My games and media live on D://, E://, and my NAS

Hi all, I have a corrupted hard drive, but i know that it still has data on it, because I used recuva to get some stuff off of it (mainly pictures). I know there's more stuff on it, because I used m3 data recovery tool, and it showed me what was in it, but you have to pay $70 after the first 1gb of data recovered... so i was wondering what the best FREE alternative to m3datarecovery tool would be, as i want to get everything off of the drive. Thanks in advance!

Hi guys, So I recently had to restore my PC (I kept all my personal files), and I remember having a backup drive backing up daily. Its still there, except I dont know how to use the informatin I've back up onto it in my 'new' windows... All I can access are folders with weird names. I know there is information there, since the hard drive in 900Gb full. I tried doing a system restore but I couldn't find anything All I did was backup, I didn't create a system image or restore point. Can anyone help me please? Thanks!!!!

Is there a way to restore all HDD partitions to it's original form? As in when I bought my laptop it had a 500GB HDD but I've partitioned 40GB. I've tried merging them back together but it looks like I still have 5 or so GBs missing. How do I fix this? If there is a way to fix this. I just want to restore it to the original 500GB.

Hi all! So I'm having a bit of a weird and very annoying problem with my laptop. I was using it and all of a sudden it crashed and came up with a blue screen telling me I should "Restore" my computer to an earlier date because it couldn't load properly. (See attached photo) Anyways I thought this was quite odd so I did it. Anyways my computer began working again so I thought eh it's just a weird thing but it's fixed now should be all good. Well I was wrong because about 10 minutes later it crashed and did the same thing again. I decided to click "cancel" this time to see what would happen and it bought up more options (see attached photo) I decided just to shut my computer down and see if it would work. I then started it back up again and during the boot up screen it came up with a message saying "Diagnosing your PC" and surprise, surprise, it went back to the "restore" screen again. So I clicked restore and it did the entire loop again but this time instead of letting me log in and work for about 10 minutes it crashed as soon as it tried to boot again and came up with the same "Restore" message. So I am stuck in a limbo of my computer crashing over and over and I try all the options but it's just the same every time, I click "Restore" and it either will let me log in for about 10 minutes before crashing or crash straight away! It has been doing this for 3 days now. Any help is seriously appreciated as I'm sure you can imagine is a very annoying situation to be in! Laptop specs are: LAPTOP: Asus F550DP-XX055H 15.6 inch screen CPU: AMD A10 5650g GPU: AMD Radeon HD 8670M 2gb MOTHERBOARD: (Not sure, but I'll try and find out and then update this post) RAM: DDR3 16gb ram OS: windows 10 64bit BOIS Version: American Megatrends Inc. 210, 6/4/2014

I wasn't for sure what section this best fitted in, but if another section is best fitted for this thread, please move it. But anyways here is my question: Windows Backup and Restore (Windows 7) vs Macrium Reflect I used to use Windows Backup and Restore when I was running Windows 7. Then Microsoft dropped it in Windows 8/8.1 and I started to use Macrium Reflect. Now fast forward to the release of Windows 10, It now comes with the ability to use the Windows Backup and Restore like it was in Windows 7. My question is now Should I continue to use Macrium Reflect or should I go back to using Windows Backup and Restore (Windows 7)? I am trying to get all my backups on one program so I can arrange them as needed....

I have a similar issue, I was editing videos on my externally connected SSD (HyperX Fury 60GB (~2 years old)) at a friends house, I then went home and plugged it into my laptop's docking station and now it does not show up anywhere, not in my computer, or disk management, or the device manager. I have of course tried connecting it to other computers and got the same results, I then used the cable and adapter that I was using for the SSD on a different drive and it worked fine. This leaves only one option obviously, that it was a hardware fault, I am yet to open it up as I do not have the security torx that is required, however I soon will be able to. Warranty voids for this product are fine as it was a freebie that I had snagged off of the school and is most probably out of warranty any way. Now to the question, Is there any possible way that the most beloved files and hours of hard work spent on this drive could be somehow recovered? I don't care about the files enough to send them off for a few hundred dollar repair however and any solutions should be DIY, thanks. Failing a repair are there any cool ways that I could give this drive the glorious burial that it deserves? I will upload some pictures of the drive both external and internal if that could help.

Hi, posting for a friend. He was working with a video in Premiere Pro, and he used the 720p Youtube video setting to export. He accidentally selected the original raw file to write over. It then gave him an error, and now the file says size: 0 bytes and refuses to be used for anything. Any way to recover this or is he screwed?

Yes, I know this is a rather common error and there's a giant reddit thread about this. However I have yet to find someone with the same error code on Windows 10 (Only finding ones with Windows 7 with that code). So here I am making this thread. Onto the problem itself. I'm trying to reinstall a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro on a Surface Pro 3 i3 version. The current 10 was upgraded from 8.1. Now I'm experiencing some issues and would like to reinstall for a fresh install to hopefully solve all the little issues I'm having. The error has popped up with every install I tried. Here's what I have done from the beginning. At first I went to the Recovery page and tried to reset the computer that way. I got "Could not find the recovery environment" error. Moving on. I used the Media Creation Tool x64 from Microsoft to create an installer with a USB stick. The surface I have is the 64gb model so there was no way I could squeeze out 20gb free of the main drive. I then unplugged everything off the Surface (including the keyboard), leaving only the USB stick plugged in, and proceeded with the install. The computer restarted to the installing page, it goes to around 9% before restarting itself and restores the previous version of Windows with the error "0x80070070 - 0x2000c The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during APPLY_IMAGE operation" I have tried deleting $Windows.~WS and the Download folder under SoftwareDistribution. I also tried clicking Keep Settings, and all combination of don't find update option. All to no success. Same error code every time. I could try booting from the USB itself and starting the install there and formatting my PC beforehand, but if the install fails I risk bricking the device so this'll be the last resort. I'll continue researching for a solution but if anyone here knows something I can try, that'll be much appreciated! Thank you!

UPDATE: I managed to get back to the prev. build so I'm back in win 7 and everythig is working. The reason I could not go back earlyer was that there was not enough disc space. I'm thinking of getting a new larger ssd and do a fresh install of win 10 an se if that will do the trick. I also read somewere that removing the gpu driver before ugrading might work. Does this sound like a good idea? Is there anything else that would be wise to try? Today I decided to try to upgrade my personal rig to win 10 for the second time. The first time I gave up after not being able to install nvidia driver, ( a common problem). On this attempt i was no different. After the upgrade was done I had no GPU driver, so I when to Nvidias web-page and got the latest driver installed it an after a few minutes of installation I got this: see image. I managed to reboot using the keyboard but it did nothing. Next I decided to go back to win 7 and try again, but when rebooting 3 times to get the "problems starting windows menu" and selecting go back to previous build it tells me that there was a problem and it cant go back to the previous build. Please someone help me out!

So a couple weeks a go I updated to the terrific Windows 10 while I was in the spirit of doing an upgrade. I have heard that windows 10 keeps a restore file for windows 7 for a while after windows 10 is installed. But apparently the restore file is only temporary and stays on the PC for around a month? I was wondering if there was a way to make a back up of this file to an external source so it can be used at any point, even after windows 10 has deleted it after the given keep time? Thank you, -Eddie My computer specs if required. http://pastebin.com/NRDmPYG2
