i bought a pretty bad pre built system a while ago and recently upgraded it with an i7 6700k mostly for music production. but i also game quite alot so i decidet to put a gpu in there aswell. i got a great deal on a r9 290 twin frozr but i only have a 500 watt powersupply and its a pretty bad one aswell. (coolermaster thunder 500w) and i really dont have any money at this point to buy a new psu. can i get away with underclocking the r9 290 so it draws less power and i dont blow up my system? or do you guys just straight up recomend not putting it in until i have money for a new powersupply?

Hey guys Haven't posted here in a while so I'm not sure what it's like here anymore, but here goes I may have killed my R9 290 recently. It was a sapphire tri-x variant, but 2/3 of the fans died and temps were getting pretty bad (60 degrees at idle, and 95 degrees on the core/115 degrees on the VRM at load).I got the Kraken G10 (used, with a H50 as the watercooler). Hooked everything up, and let it spin for a while. I could hear the pump working, and the radiator/tubing got pretty warm, so I guessed everything was okay. GPU temps were a lot better at 45 degrees on the core. I tried to OC the thing to 1120/1600 (core/memory) (it was okay on the stock cooler), and ran Kombustor to test the temps out. Ran up to 60 degrees on the core, and 109 on the VRM before the screen cut out and I wasn't able to get a signal from the GPU. Cleared the CMOS, hit the reset button, tried a different monitor. I know the system can turn on because all the fans spin up/all the LEDs light up, and the tubing/radiator get hot after a while. Any idea of what I could do, or what went wrong?

Hello all, I was browsing some local ads and i found a R9 290 advertised as half working Do you think this is savable? Artifacts during crash MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION bsod Artifacts before crash Artifacts during fresh install He said the temps are normal, and when he puts a different gpu in it works properly. Any help? P.S it's being offered for 100 euros

im roaming the classifieds and im seeing R9 290´s for about 130~150€ , Is it worth it? or should i just crossfire my 270x´s? doing the latter will need a psu upgrade (im not gonna molex 2 6pin connectors to this old brick ) any reccoemndations for that ?

I am currently running crossfire r9 290s and during gameplay with everything maxed and 200% resolution scaling it looks and runs beautifully but I have noticed that it is only utilizing one GPU and keeping the first GPU at 100%. The only time the game seems to utilize the 2nd GPU is in the menus. I have the latest drivers and I am not sure if it is a problem with my crossfire profile or if that is just normal with BF1. Anyone else having the same issue?

I have been slowly upgrading my PC lately and have been debating buying a 4k monitor for gaming but I am not sure how my current rig would hold up. Here is the PC part picker list. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/kMrvbj I know it won't play it maxed out but I want to know if I would be able to get a better gaming experience on games such as BF 1, Doom, Overwatch, and Gears of War 4. Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, I want to ask you if this old cpu (Core2Quad q9650 3.0 ghz) can still handle 2 gpus. It will be overclocked soon (Definitely at 4.0 ghz and even more). Currently it's working with Sapphire radeon r9 290. I want to buy another gpu, and I'm afraid, that this old grandpa can't handle both graphic card at same time. What do you think? Is there chance to run it? Thanks for answers

I have owned a a second hand windforce r9 290 for about a year and a half, and now it is starting to give out artifacts at the factory clock speed (on games like project cars, squad, and insurgency). The downclocked performance (800mhz) on my 3 1080p monitors wasn't all very good in the first place(only used eyefinity on insurgency and P.C.), but now is not acceptable. My CPU is a now aging haswell core i7-4770k with 16 gigs of 1600mhz ddr3. Would it be worth spending money on a new cpu, mobo, and ram or a new video card (like a gtx 1070 or 1080)? I am looking for the most effective performance increase overall.

Hi! I want to do a custom loop with my i5 2500k@5ghz 1.4v and r9 290@1200/1500mhz 1.1v. I calculated with outervision everything (even the pump) with cpu at 100% tdp and it said 650W and recommends 700W. I fonun a really good deal on Super Flower Leadex 650W Silver. It's a very good power supply, it has been reviewed by some guys who writes trusted reviews since 2005 and it has been bought more than 100 times from a site in my country. EVGA uses Super Flower in their b3 series, so another sign to trust Super Flower. Does it have enough watts?

So after international travel my computer is no longer getting past the Asus boot screen. And when it gets to that screen the Asus logo looks corrupted with lines on the side. I can get into the bios fine but it looks funky. I tried taking the graphics card out of the computer and booting using the integrated graphics and that worked fine. Which leads me to believe my graphics card is at fault Does this mean the graphics card is dead and there is nothing else I can do to get it to work again besides buying a new graphics card? I would really appreciate any help because I definitely can't afford one for a long while...

Ok so ive started to look at Blender as C4D is an expensive thing to keep update with. I like blender in many ways its better than C4D....... apart from: Setup GPU in the prefs check Setup GPU in the render panel check Render... NOPE It just hangs on the this screen for maybe 5 seconds and blender shuts down and i'm back to my desktop... WTF I can see online that cycles and OPEN CL don't have the best relationship but there must be a way to fix it??????????

I'm running a 4770k @ 4.5Ghz and have a sapphire r9 290 trix oc When I try 40v40 battles I get really bad fps no matter what my settings are (but with the unit size at huge) my GPU looks to be the culprit as it goes from 0% to 100% utilization while my CPU sits at 40% wanna know if this is normal behavior for this game

Hi. I searched google but didn't find anything. Are there any custom drivers for r9 280/290/380/390 to work with windows xp 32bit? Don't waste time and energy to tell me wtf are you doing with windows xp in 2017 and the awnser is retro gaming. It is possible to make gtx 970-TitanXM working with xp by just adding their name in the driver's notepad. Is it possible to do the same thingwith amd gpus as well? Keep in mind that r9 270x works with xp so it is possible.

Motherboard: Asrock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer Power Supply: CoolerMaster G750M Processor: FX8320 Graphics Card: Sapphire Tri-x r9 290 RAM: 2X (8GB Kingston HyperX Fury) Cooling: Hyper 212evo and 6 (or so) case fans. Hi so ... PC doesn't POST anymore the mobo seems to be the issue (did mobo swap), however upon unplugging the GPU the system will boot (led's power up and num lock is responsive). {https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6hnjcpedIzjblpBY0RlLUJPZEk/view?usp=sharing} So this is where I'm at: I've built my pc 3 years ago and after a year or so my pc randomly shut down (fyi: I was playing the Forest :D). Instantly checked for a defective part, thought it was my PSU so RMA'd that got my very same PSU back (no problems found). Whilst checking for defects I ran some GPU intensive stresstests like FurrMark etc, PC did the same thing so i RMA'd my gpu, got it back (no problems found). It was at this time that my brother bought his PC so we tried a cpu/mobo swap, so i got his i7 and he got my fx8320, but he had no problems (his GPU GTX 560ti ... we bought his in used condition). Everything good, but still his PC would very rarely crash or take very long to POST. Tried a load of stuff afterward, like OC'ing the CPU, but CSGO didn't like that too much, stresstests would run fine though. Undervolting his CPU to try take some load away, nothing helped. So I decided to set his PC at stock freq, but like i said it would still crash from time to time (while gaming). Then I decided to upgrade to a GTX 1060, and give my r9 290 to my brother, but then we would have the same system once again (my fx rig). So he got the GTX 1060, but I needed it for a project I was working on (involving NVIDIA GameStream) so I needed that GPU, we swapped PSU so he got my 750w, i got his 650w hoping that we would not run into any problems here. As soon as I had swapped them the FX rig would not boot entirelly first it would get into the Windows login screen, but would shutdow immediately after loging in (driver issue), then it would only just get into the bios, but anything past that would cause it to shut down, following this was a bootloop that would only barely make it into the bios. Now the system wont POST and i'm quite fed up with it. Any suggestions ? EDIT: Forgot to tell you that one of the pins on the USB3 header is bent but isn't making contact with any other pin. I also can't RMA the board because the warranty period is over. TLDR: PC won't POST (Occasionaly) unplugging non-defective GPU does allow booting. I know that my motherboard is the issue because a mobo swap solves the issue. What is causing this ? Can I fix this ?

So i still run an old r9 290... I still get along with the performance of it since i dont run that GPU dependent games and only Play at Full HD. BUT the Card is a Bit toasty and loud... Now i think about watercooling it, probably an AIO since i cant find reasonable priced waterblocks. Or would you recomend an Upgrade to a newer Card?

I currently have a sapphire tri-x r9 290 and i am thinking of an upgrade this Christmas. Basically my question is, do you think i should get a second r9 290 (or 390 is availability is better) and run them in crossfire, or should i sell my r9 290 and pickup a gtx 1070. Keep in mind i live in Canada so the prices are a bit fucked over here.

I put up my 1050ti for sale and a guy dm me that he would exchange r9 290 with $45 cash.I cant find any benchmarks comparing them so should i go through the deal(would have to buy power supply)

Premise I have had this card for a good number of years and over time I can only imagine that components will start to degrade. However, in this instance, it's the temperature at this time I am looking at the sensor monitoring in GPU-Z and the Temperature is 81c at 0% load and with a Core clock of 300MHz. This is completely outlandish. What I think the issue is I have re-applied thermal paste 4 times now, twice with generic compound and twice with the Grizzly Kryonuat. With each application, I applied a different amount and a different method. Each application gives me results ~1/2c difference. So based on this experiment I can tell that the paste is not the issue. However, I can see that and from what I can only describe is the thermal pads and their decay. My terms decay stems from the fact that I very lightly moved a piece of the thermal pad and it just came apart. Ther force was so little that the rest of the thermal pad did not move except the tiny bit that came away. I would just like to know if this absurd temperature from the GPU could solely be based on the fact that the thermal pads are just too old and ineffective and if they are the cause of such high temperatures.

Possible Bottleneck? Hi so I've got an r9 290 and an x4 880k which I'm considering upgrading cause I think I'm being bottle-necked. Do you guys and gals think it's worth my time to get a used i5 4590 (it's my friend's and he'll give it to me for £40) and a new motherboard? Thanks for any advice. Also here's my usage stuff while playing overwatch on low settings 60fps.

Hello. So I recently got an old desktop from someone I know because he had gotten a new computer. He said that the gpu had given up. (It worked perfectly when I tried it) So now I'm sitting here with a pretty powerful system that I have no idea what to do with. Specs: Cpu: AMD 8350 Gpu: RX 290 Ram: 16GB Psu: 650W. Cooling: Noctua D-15, think it's their flagship model. No harddrive. First of all, i struggled to get this machine to post. The bios wouldn't initiate or anything. Turns out that the motherboard didn't like to have a harddrive connected. Tried updating the bios, the bios didn't update. Swapped from 32gb ram to 16gb, put in a freshly formated drive and a Windows installation stick, managed to install Windows and I got it to boot. Great. It's working So now. What do I use it for? Had some ideas, I have a pretty awesome Ethernet connection in my apparentment (1Gb/s!), so I thought I'd run a few game servers on it. That would use the 8350. But I would still have an R9 290 just sitting there doing nothing. Could I use it for mining? Or would that make too much noise? 290s get loud, no fun in having a vacuum cleaner on for 24/7. And would mining with a 290 even gain me anything? Another thought would be to use it as an HTCP, but I would still want to run servers, having a noisy system on in my livingroom/bedroom wouldn't be very nice. Lastly, I thought I'd use it as a mix-up of NAS, game server and server for other random projects, but again, then I would have a 290 doing absolutely nothing. Any other ideas? Thoughts on how I can utilize the GPU? Is there any gain from selling it?

Hello there people. Hope you guys doing fine. I have an R9 290 from like 4 or 5 years ago. Its brand is Sapphire, the TRI-X model. I have an AM3+ 970A G43 Motherboard and an FX 8320, also for PSU I have Highpower 750W. So for my question, is the R9 OK for the new games such as BF5 or some sick a** shooters, you know. And of course if it is OK, then to what should I upgrade my CPU and thusly the MoBo to with a third world country currency (from Turkey)? Thanks for helping, cheers.

What's poppin forum. I've been meaning to build my little sister a new system for a while now, and this past black friday I ordered all the parts. I did however decide to look to the used market for an R9 290, as the performance figures I've seen are fairly respectable and the cards can be had for cheap. So I travelled out an hour from where I live, picked up an XFX R9 290 Double Dissipation for $130 (CAD) and took it home. The guy I picked it up from had mentioned that he had flashed an R9 290X bios on to the card as this model has dual bios. On first glance, the card seemed to be just what I was looking for. I ran Fortnite, Forza and GTA 5 as well as did some encoding on the GPU and everything seemed pretty swell, although the card does exhibit some coil whine. On further inspection, when I ran furmark the card would run at ≈ 950 MHz, but would do these weird semi rapid dips down to ≈ 300 MHz. I thought that that was a little strange, but the card ran games fine, so I thought it was probably okay. The card was a little dusty when I got it, so I decided to disassemble it to clean it up. Looking at the VRMs/VRM thermal pads, I noticed something a little concerning. There was one mosfet that seemed to be off kilter, and it's position on the thermal pad was discolored as compared to the rest of the contact with the other mosfets. To that point, looking at the cards thermals in GPU-Z, "VRM Temperature 2" under Furmark stress test reads up to 130°C. Do you think that one of the mosfets is dead? Is it possible that the coil whine I'm hearing is due to this potentially dead mosfet? This is my first time buying a graphics card used, and the first time I've fully disassembled one, so I would like to hear from someone who is a little more experienced to get their perspective, if at all possible. I've provided to images as well to give a little more context, but if you require more detailed ones, I can try to provide them. Thank you so much everyone!

Just got a new Samsung CJG5 27" QHD 144Hz Monitor and seem to having a weird issue. In games, when set at 1440p @144Hz = Stutters and frame freezes every couple seconds when set at 1080p @144Hz= Fine when set at 1440p@60Hz = Fine Also tested several games and benchmarks, so it's not a program specific issue. I've been tearing my hair out trying to solve this but haven't been able to. Even done a clean windows install to no avail. Any ideas? System specs in summary : FX8320@4.4Ghz, MSI R9 290 4GB @Stock clock, Corsair 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz, 850W EVGA B2 PSU, Asus M5a99fx pro r2.0. Connected via displayport with a cable that is 144hz qhd compatible. Thanks a lot!

Hello, I would like to get some helpful information about AIO water cooling my ASUS R9 290 graphics card. I want to use my Corsair H80i AIO cooler (one with an almost square water block, not one with octagonal shape) with my ASUS R9 290 DirectCu II OC - 4GB 512-bit graphics card, but I'm not sure if almost impossible to get Corsair HG10 A1 adapter will even fit this card. I attached everything I could find without disassembling the card by myself before I even know anything. If anyone has a clue about that or even better ideas to mount this together I would be grateful for the help. PS I live in Central Europe, so I can't buy everything from the US, because not everyone is sending outside the states.

Hey guys I'm just looking for some second opinions on my buying dilemma. Looking to buy a used video card off Kijiji and I cannot make a decision. My options are: - Zotac GTX 1050Ti 4GB listed at $180 CAD - Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 4GB listed at $180 CAD - MSI RX 470 4GB listed at $200 CAD Some other important information is that the power supply for the system is a 500w Rosewill unit so I have some doubts about the R9 290 using that psu. Basically I wonder if I should go for a newer card such as the RX 470 or 1050Ti, even if it is a little bit slower just for the fact that they are a newer architecture and perhaps have better driver support. Any insight you guys can give is appreciated. Thanks!
