  1. Hi there everyone I know the school year just started, but I want to learn a programming language. It has been something i've wanted to do for a while now, but never got around to it, and on the rare occasion that i did, something went wrong. A few months ago, I got an ebook called Jumping Into C++. It seemed to be a very good book, until my hard drive managed to break, wiping every last bit of information stored on my old laptop. Now that I have a new one, I think its about time i finally did something about my desire to program. First of all, I want to know if C++ is even the right language to start off with. I am in 8th grade and have never taken a class on programming. I have done my fair share of research and my collection of knowledge has led me to the conclusion that C++ is in fact a good language to start with. Is this true? If it is or isn't please tell me why. Next, for whatever language you think i should learn, could you give me a good resource for actually learning it. It could be an ebook, online "course", or maybe even a hard copy of a book that i could get from a library. By the way, when i say online course i mean something like www.codecademy.com rather than an actual online class that requires me to enroll. That is pretty much it IF I FORGOT ANY IMPORTANT STEPS TO PICKING A LANGUAGE OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT, TELL ME AN I WILL QUICKLY EDIT THIS TO MAKE SURE I GET THE BEST ADVICE POSSIBLE!!! Thanks, d3cod3d
  2. I am trying to understand the principles. I guess some simple examples will help me understand it. Thank you.

  4. Story from /. Just thought it was interesting and the people of this section of the forum would find it informative/educational. I am not into programming/CS yet, but I might be one day. I will bookmark this video so it is more relevant to me then.
  5. So this year for my electronic engineering course at college I have to complete an "electronic based project." For this I'm planning on making an LED lighting system for my PC, but making it considerably cheaper and more customisable than what's currently available. I'm planning to use and arduino to control the LED's. I'll be doing all the soldering, wiring and housing for the LED's and arduino unit programming myself. I want to differentiate my product from anything else that available, so if anyone has any ideas, I'm open to suggestion. So far I've had these ideas: LED strips which light up in patterns controlled by a program off of the arduino. similar the "demo" mode on some backlit keyboards. Linking the arduino to the sound output of my PC (Not entirely sure how I'd do this. Possibly just using a microphone although that wouldn't be ideal) and get the LED's to respond to the sound using filters I also need an idea on how to effectively mount the lights, and the arduino in my case. I want it to be fairly secure, but more importantly, look good (hidden?) when the side panel is back on the computer. I'm also open to suggestions regarding the setup of the LED's. They don't have to be in a strip. Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated. Thanks Rhys
  6. Hey, im just sniffing around thinking about if programming is something im willing to spend time and effort learning. I think it will be a great hobby instead of juat games. Heres what im wondering: *what do you recomend starting with? *where shuld i start? *Icant find any classes where i live that can teach me so any sugestions where ob the internett i shall go? *what is it im getting myself into? *hoe did you get started and why? Ps.i know there is simular topics like this
  7. Hello! I've been learning Actionscript 3 for about 2 weeks now and decided to create a visual novel. So far I have only been working on the start menu. The picture and music in the game are not done by me. I took them from google to have something to work with until I create them myself. I'll be happy if I could get some ideás, critics, feedback or answer some questions. Here's a link to the game. https://kuniko.se/shared/Main.swf Had to put it in "code" because it embedded the swf file. I don't have a good upload speed so it will take some time to load I can also send the source code if someone wants to have a look at it. Progress: 20/08/2013: -Added Main Menu. -Added menu buttons continue, start, settings, quit. -Added button mouse over sound -Added background image. -Added background music (Does not play on IE 10 for me). -Added function to quit button (Does not work in Chrome and Firefox). 21/08/2013: -Added function to settings button. -Added settings menu. -Added fullscreen setting (Does not work in browser). -Added back button in settings menu. -Added function to start button. -Changed default background color to black. 22/08/2013: -Added sound channels. -Added game scene. -Added textbox to game scene. -Added textfields to game scene. -Added script. -Added script functions (Click on the textbox for next line). -Added back button when script ends. -Fixed background music to start/stop correctly. -Recorded new background music for main/settings menu. 23/08/2013: -Added voice. -Added script. -Added background.
  8. With the advent of the modern multi-core, multi-threaded CPU along with GPU integration, etc. has our computing hardware outstripped our capacity to reasonably take advantage of it? We already know that very few programs out there are designed to address more than one core or even one thread at a time and all these extra streams we have for processing data are, for the most part, treated as completely separate resources (as if each process was running on it's own little computer). Sure, queueing helps a little but can you really call that using the technology the way it was meant to be used? and, even when programs are "designed for multi-threading", they're often simply a bunch of smaller programs sandwiched into one interface each doing it's own thing while giving the illusion of integration. When, if it's even possible, will we catch up to the hardware we've created and what will it take to do so? Perhaps it's time to focus on creating a "super-language" wherein we tell the computer what we want it to do and let it decide how to code it directly into machine code using whatever instruction set the processor requires.
  9. Hey. Any programmers here who have experience with ergonomic keyboards? Do they really help? I'm planning to buy the new ergonomic keyboard from Microsoft once it gets released. Just to try it out. But I would like to see what others think of it aswell. Typing on a regular keyboard feels very unnatural for me. My shoulders become "crunched" or what ever it's called. Worth noting is that I have broad shoulders so this might be the issue. I'm not planning to game on these keyboards, just do my everyday work without discomfort, if possible. Positive thing is that the new Microsoft keyboard is wireless, so I can easily put it away when I'm done with it. Oh, and I'm currently using a Ducky Shine 2 with MX Blue switches. So, worth trying out or not? Should I get the Ergonomic 4000 keyboard first since it's cheaper and try out the layout first? EDIT: Sigh... I have a mechanical keyboard already with a wristrest. I'm using (as stated above) the Ducky Shine 2 and a wristrest, the one from Ducky aswell.
  10. Hello LTT, At the age of 15 I've decided to start thinking about University. So I've been looking into the following to continue what I want to do with my knowledge of programming: Computer Science Mathematics & Statistics What I would like to do with my programming skills is make algorithms. Trying to figure out what users like, preferences - predicting the Stocks, Currency exchanges.etc Basically Things that have to do with Math. Are there any other courses I should be looking at? Edit: I'm also interesting in Networking Architecture
  11. // Title says it all. What inspired you guys to start coding? I just started learning Python because I've always been interested in how the software that I use in my everyday life actually works. I really enjoy it so far (:
  12. G'day techies, I'm working on a checksum application and i added a drag&drop function, this all worked fine up untill i requested the application to be elevated. At this point drag&drop stopped working, this is because of windows message system blablabla, long story short: you can't drop&drop to a higher elevated application only to equal or lower ones. I've tried it within the app.manifest <requestedExecutionLevel level="requireAdministrator" uiAccess="false" /> and then changing uiAccess to true, but this can only be done when the program is installed in program files, or by some sort of certificate. So could someone help me out here? It can be 2 things: or i have to request admin privileges for just 1 function and then remove them somehow, i have already tried this with PrincipalPermission only this gave me an error that it failed. or i need to be able to enable uiAccess Link to the project: https://github.com/victorheld/checksum Sincerely, Onno
  13. gcc -o incrementing_pointers incrementing_pointers.c incrementing_pointers.c: In function ‘main’:incrementing_pointers.c:5:9: warning: assignment from incompatible pointer type [enabled by default] ptr = &arr; ^ #include <stdio.h>main(){ int arr[5] = {15, 20 , 25, 30, 35}; int *ptr; ptr = &arr; int i; for(i = 0; i < 5; i++){ printf("Element %d: %d\n", i + 1, *ptr); ptr++; }} I'm having an issue with compiling this code. I've been following along with a tutorial series and I've typed it character for character, but I don't seem to be able to get this to compile. Here's the tutorial I've been watching:
  14. All right then I find myself in need of some expert advice, most importantly regarding mechanical keyboards. More specifically for hybrid use in a few different scenarios. Background/Prelude As the years sadly pass by I'm finding that the long hours I spend in service to the digital age are taking an ever increasing toll on my body. Preferring the right side predominantly for mouse use this is manifesting in episodes of RSI in my right shoulder, arm, hand, wrist or any combinations thereof. It's really becoming a problem I'm now forced to take notice of and attempt to deal with. Research seems to suggest the most likely cause to be the fact that I generally position my keyboard directly in front of me and due to my small stature my mouse positioning ends up way off to the side. Thus resulting in an unnatural arm position and a build up of strain. This has therefore lead me to the realization that I must seek out a small keyboard in order to fetch my mouse position into a more centralized area. While I love my Das Keyboard I think the time for it's retirement is imminently approaching. Current Use Case I write software for a living; I work two jobs which has me typing something like 60 hours plus a week. I work evenings and weekends at home and a 9-5 in an office/on site. While I do really love the MX Blues in my Das they have been the source of much irritation from various colleagues as they make for a terrible distraction in an enclosed (or open!) space. I also do quite a bit of pair programming, this means that someone is very likely to share my board at times. Furthermore I write code in a cross platform environment; OS X, Windows & Linux so the board is transitory a lot of the time. When I do get free time I enjoy playing a wide variety of MMOs/FPSs. I have found, much in line with common opinion, that the Blues can make for some irritation in this area. Plus mashing them somehow feels perverse or wrong... What I'm After I think I'm after something that fulfils some of the following: Is smaller, either a ten key-less or a mini like the Ducky Mini Is quieter for office use Has a back light (preferably lot's of colours, I know RGB is off the table given the size) Initially comes with blank key caps (or if good enough can be acquired for separately) Is of decent build quality; it has to be able to withstand the pounding I'm going to be giving it Is portable My main concern about a mini board is the extra key presses needed to get at things like the function keys and so on, which are used heavily when writing code. It would be really great to get the opinions/experiences of anyone who is using specific keyboards for this particular purpose... Mice Lastly and just to consolidate multiple topics, mice. I'm simply after something that would complement the scenarios mentioned above. I'm currently suspecting the SteelSeries Sensei. In Closing Budget is not a concern for either the keyboard or the mouse. I see these as productivity tools and shall consider them accordingly.
  15. Hello everyone from LinusTechTips, I'm working on a project, and I would appreciate some help translating it. I've made most of the translations myself with the help of some friends, but there are a few languages that I'm having trouble with. The language I'm looking forward the most is french, if any of you is able to help me, I'll leave the corresponding words/expressions I need on my program down below, so you can translate it if you can do so. I need the following translated to French : "Username Password Tab Read From/Read Write To/Write Options Logout/Log-out Visibility Return to Editor Return Change Details Change Username/Password" If you're able to translate it to other languages, let me know which languages you refer to, and I'll reply to let you know if I need those translations. Thank you in advance, Nuno
  16. Update this is Now happening on known working programs any way ............................. All help is greatly appreciated #include < stdio.h>#include <stdlib.h>#include <conio.h>void StudentID(int studentNumber);int GetstudentID (); // StudentID //int studentID(int Min, int Max);int main (void){ // Student number // int GetstudentID(); int studentID=0; { int Number = 0, Min = 1, Max = 100; int studentID; printf("Plase enter a studentID <101-999>" ); scanf("%d", &studentID); return studentID; printf("\n Validated studentID (%d-%d) : %d", Min, Max, Number); fflush(stdin); return (studentID); printf("Press any key to continue"); scanf("%d"); }}{ int Number = 0, Min = 1, Max = 100; printf("Enter a vaild grade %d and %d: ", Min, Max); Number = studentID(Min, Max); printf("\nValidated Grade (%d-%d) : %d", Min, Max, Number); getchar(); }int studentID();{int studentID(int Min, int Max) const int True= 1; // Constant True defined as 1 */ const int False= 0; int ItemRead = False; float Input = 0; // Input read as float // int Valid = False; // Must be initialised to flase // do { // Read NB scanf() returns the iteams of successfully read // ItemRead = scanf("%f", &Input); fflush(stdin); // Validate None numeruc (In which case scanf doesnt read in anything // if(ItemRead == False) { printf("Invalid - must be a number Please try again (%d-%d): ", Min, Max); } // Validate not a whole number // else if(Input != (int)Input) // INput truncates float value to no decimal points // { printf("Invalid - must be a integer Please try again (%d-%d) : ", Min, Max); } // Validated - Invalied value? 17. I was wonder from you all people that what would be a good language to use to get a sucessful INDIE game up and running? I heard LUA, but people said there is better. I wanted your opinion on what to use, and where to get lessons to learn, and to touch up more. Thanks for the help! ~Equinoxe
  18. Was browsing my Facebook feed and came across this... thought i would share... maybe some of you are just starting... or have people asking what we do or something similar... this is about us coders... what we do... how most people start...
  19. I'm looking for a new laptop that I can use for when I'm not home with my desktop, of course. Going to be used for gaming like Titanfall and BF4 at a decent quality and some programming for APCS so 4GB of RAM would be minimum. Brand doesn't matter just not Acer please and price I'd like to be under $700 but if not it's fine. Thanks everyone!
  20. How to create a game? I started using cryengine and ubisoft game engines. Are they good. Also anyone does good begginers turtorials??. I want to create a game which can be played on all platforms ( first pc ofcourse ). Does anyones where they are putting the programming scripts and why they are writting them on the engine. Why they are using programming and what programming?/

  22. Hey, I'm building a new rig for gaming (mainly) and just general use/programming. My budget is £2,000 and I'm just under it at the moment. I'd like to get some second opinions on the build and any recommendations to reduce the price or for better components. The only thing I'm really set on is the case, motherboard and graphics card. Thanks for any replies. 23. Hi! So basically I need help with figuring out a code that will be executed by a timer that has an interval of 7 minutes. What this code will do is simply something small that will not bother the user and not interupt things like powerpoint presentations or youtube videos etc. But it will just do something that makes sure that the computer does not start it's screensaver. The reason for this is that on my school the teachers computers has some sort of lock on them from the IT dep. that basically makes it impossible (that I know of) to change the time for when the screen saver will be activated and when the screen goes to sleep. So basically what I want this program to do is to every 7 minute or so execute a code that does something small and not noticeble so it will not bother anyone but we can have powerpoints on for longer than 10 minutes without the screen going to sleep. (Mostly you go through several slides so often it's not a problem but when you stop for us students to write notes or the teacher is talking about what is on the screen then there are problems... The IT dep. on the school are morons and refuses to remove it, or they just don't know why it is there and just will not admit it? But I thought I'd do this to make life easier for the teachers on my school. As well us students.) Im programming VB.Net not C# or C++ or C... I have thought about implementing a timer that will be for 1 hour that simply will stop the other timer that makes the computer "remove" the screensaver because it will eventually have to go into screensaver mode and if you forget the program on then the one picture may hurt your screen. So it can be good to have that there. I will then add a reload button to simply reload the timers for another hour. Please ask me for more info if you want it. But really, Im the one who has the questions! So I really appreciate if someone helps! Regards, Ludwig Johnson
  24. Does anyone know of any keyboards that are good for both programming and gaming? I don't know a lot about the different switch types so if someone can explain. Also something that isn't too heavy or big I'd probably be throwing it in my bag a lot and moving with it using it for a laptop. Lastly it can't be too much, at most $200. thanks
  25. Hey guys, So, here is the build, mostly. Any more information, please ask. Case: Corsair 900D PSU: Corsair TX 750 CPU: Intel i7 4770k CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Extreme Ram: 4X8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 1866 GPU: Asus GTX 780 DC2OC SSD: 2X256GB Samsung Evo HDD: 1TB Western Digital Black, 2TB Western Digital Green Monitor: Asus VN248H-P 23.8" IPS BD-Rom: Asus Blu-ray Burner Mouse: Razer Naga MMO Mouse Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Battlefield 4 Edition Headset: Razer Tiamat 7.1 So, as you can tell, I'm pretty comfortable with Asus, Razer, and Corsair. I have used and enjoy their products and Corsair's warranty people were awesome with me before. Beyond that, I think I made some good choices. I currently do computer programming for a living. Mostly web applications, but the occasional mobile app stuff. I also plan on joining the PC gaming master race, but I wanted to be able to do it all. I think this build will be able to do it for me. Also, I haven't been into too much overclocking, so a lot of this is learning for me. I'm enjoying getting into learning all of this. I am thinking about doing a fully water cooling system soon. Any help would be HIGHLY appreciated. Also, sex appeal is something I'm looking for. Everything already has a red/black theme to it, so I am just going to run with it. Maybe integrate some white. Any advice on LEDs? I'm not sure how those are installed. One thing I thought someone smarter could help me with was the fan orientation. Should the radiator be in push, or pull, or whatever. There are three fans in the front. One exhaust in the back. I'm not sure the best set up. Also, anything else I should get or advice would be nice. Everything should be arriving Wednesday, if not Thursday. I'm kind of new to this forum. Should I post pictures and stuff to here? Would people like that. Kind of go over everything. I don't know. Someone tell me. Thanks, Kevin
