I came across a Poweredge 2950 on Craigslist and I was wondering if it is powerful enough to run as a Plex server. It sports two Xeon E5345 's. I know these are old but say I pick this up for ~$40 do you think it would be good enough?

Neweggbussiness.com has this server for $569. It seems to include 8 300gig 10k sas drives. Is this a good deal or is it a low price for a reason? Sorry, forgot to paste the link. https://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/product.aspx?item=9B-2NS-0008-0ZCM7

Hi what a first post on the forum, but I just recently was given 2 dell poweredge R710s with 48 gbs of ram each and no hard drives I'm currently using a program called knime on my desktop quad core with 8gbs of ram to do a research project for one of my classes in school which involves image classification. I was wondering is it possible to take a 250 gb ssd with windows 10 and just stick it in one of the power edges to take advantage of the processing power and if so how can I go about doing that because at the moment my quad core can not handle the load I'm putting on it. All help is appreciated

Hello everyone, Does anyone know where I could get the Rails for an HP ProLiant DL380 and a Dell Poweredge R200 for cheap? I've been looking at some stuff on eBay and other websites, but there, the rails cost around 60€... Is that too much? I thought they'd cost something in the neighbourhood of 10-20€ for one server... So, does anyone know where I could get these for cheap?

I recently acquired two Dell PowerEdge 2950's that were retired Google Search Appliances. I want to use one as a dedicated home render box for rendering CAD files as well as other gpu intensive tasks. The only problem is, the main riser is a PCI-X dual slot riser instead of the more common PCI-E 8x riser. I did a bunch of digging and have come up with no solutions to mount a GPU on the PCI-E riser that don't involve either cutting the slot on the riser or cutting a slot into the card. I would prefer to use a drop in part that would allow me to mount a dual slot graphics card into the system. I couldn't find any replacement risers that are PCI-E 16x that would work. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi guys, I recently got a Dell Poweredge T710 server. I tried to install ubuntu and it's working perfectly but it's loud af (6 fans inside passive) and I would like to turn it into a full windows 10 PC. The specs are: -dual Xeon E5620 -16 GB of ram -1.5 TB of hard drive raid -max of 1.1 kw of power with 2 redundant power supplies That said, it comes with the full tower case and the only things I miss are: -the gpu -an ssd to speed everything up Do you think that spending around 60€ to replace the fans (to make it silent) and getting a good gpu would be okay? Could I be able to game on it?

Hi everyone! I am new to this for first time with Linus Tech Tips which are my favorite on YouTube! So now point to my topic about setting up server in home to get thing up and running in processing so here’s what I need to make sure upgrade CPU, RAM, and Hard drives give enough room to keep it running. I have my own homemade rack mount, CAT5e wires running everywhere, custom router, Cisco equipment of networks, and everything in closet. Heres my current rackmount starting from top to bottom: Top - 24 ports CAT5e patch - Cisco SG300-28PP Switch - Vyatta 2600 (Lanner FW 8760 running untangle) - Desktop monitor and, Keyboard and mouse Middle - Dell Poweredge R610 running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Bottom - 2 Power stripes - CAT 5e intake - Arris CM8200 Other switch is in garage its SG300-10MPP There are two access point, one each in house and in garage, it’s Aironet 3502i dual band wireless N access point. I am looking forward to upgrade Wireless AC. I am not sure if I can choice to stay with Cisco or Ubnt. I only look for more stable, fast enough, roaming around, easy management, and of course, POE support. Two of access point I’m looking into are: Cisco WAP571 or Ubnt Unifi AC. I will be happy to hear from everyone a review those access point which are best and cheap I can find. Feel free to ask me opinion to make a change a better setup than current. So now for my Vyatta what I have, I upgraded in the following specification: CPU - Intel Xeon Quad X3450 4C/8H 2.66 GHz RAM: 16GB 4x 4GB DDR3-10600E UDIMM ECC unbuffers Storage: 1x 128GB SSD MLC (opinion for additional one more SATA, as RAID or ACHI) NIC: 8x Intel NIC OS: Untangle Firewall it running 300/30 providing by Cox but also included Verizon FiOS sitting as not active due switched to Cox to keep lower on bills. Also can upgrade to 1G/35 from Cox or 1G/1G from Verizon FiOS. Cox sucks (no rude but FiOS way better in my opinion due my parents switched it oh well.) My thought is Vyatta 2600 might retire anytime soon so I can get Dell R210 II to run pfsense or untangle I have not yet decision to choice. Reason why upgrade to R210 II cause they have AES supported and X3450 don’t dye old hardware. Now the fun part is storage server so they will be running as Plex Media Server, File Server, and possibly additional VPN, Ubnt, security camera, other server software in future. This storage server will be stay on 24/7 using low usage of power so here’s specification of Dell Poweredge R610. Dell Poweredge R610 CPU - 2x Intel Xeon Quad X5560 4C/8H RAM: 64GB DDR3-10600R ECC Storage: RAID 0 6x 300GB SAS 15K I am looking into upgrade hard drive so I’ve been looking into 6x 1TB or 6x 2TB but I’m not sure which best RAID I can use to storage all movies, personal files, pictures, backup, and many things on it. Also upgrade CPU to X5670 to handle plex media server to runs more than 4 maybe 6 at same time. Any idea would really appreciate it. Ive playing around with HP proliant DL360 G6 I got for $50, it got 1 cpu, X5560 and 4GB RAM and also one 500GB SATA. I will take some time to upgrade to dual X5670 and 64 or 72GB RAM and I am not sure if I can get 4x 1TB or 8x 500GB or 1TB depend on RAID system maximum of capacity. Also best RAID for those hard drive. For custom router, it will be always SSD at best performance and not much going on upgrade. For storage Server on R610 and DL360 G6, I only looking for 7,200 rpm or above hard drive at best but SSD are overkill in my opinion, HDD are longer lifespan than SSD at those day. For RAID setup, I want redundancy and performance at best instead RAID 0 cause it is risk for data loss. That’s why I need your option to find which suit my need. Thank you and looking forward to make this work as happily servers in closet to keep all of us happy, too!

I recently picked up an R720 with e5-2695 V2s but because it's mostly used for game servers (which are usually only use a few cores) I was going to buy some 2667 V2s and sell the 2695 v2s for a similar price that I bought the 2667s for, I chose those CPUs because I checked passmark's multi CPU database and noticed that the 2667 V2s got similar (a little better) multi threaded and significantly better single threaded scores. (here is a comparison) I checked around for cinebench scores and found that the 2695s should get ~2600-2800cb stock and the 2667s should get ~2500-2600cb. But I tested my 2695 V2s before switching them out and got ~2600cb so on the lower end but seemed fine. Then when I swapped in the 2667 V2s I ran cinebench and only got ~2300-2350 which was lower than I expected so I ran passmark and got ~18000 which is almost where it should be but sinle threaded performance was awful, like 1300 points instead of the ~2000 points it should be... I know it's set to performance per watt profile in the BIOS And before you ask, I didn't run passmark on the 2695s. If I can't resolve this I will probably just go back to those and run more benchmarks... Any ideas? Edit: Windows High Performance mode helped a little but not much, did nothing to cinebench but passmark is now ~19k with ~1450 single core...

Hello everyone! So i recently got a Dell PowerEdge R620 and a Samsung 860 EVO 500gb SSD and i didn't realize it was in ATA mode. I would like to switch to AHCI but am not exactly sure how. When the server starts it says something like AHCI BIOS isn't installed, but i looked on the dell downloads and couldn't find anything. And if i can get it into AHCI mode is there a way i can keep my Windows install or not? Thanks!

Firstly, sorry, if this is in the wrong place but I wasn't sure which category this falls under. Anyone know a good setup guide for Exchange 2016/2019 for someone who has never dealt with it before? I had picked up a PowerEdge R420 SFF Refurbished for cheap in hopes to move my fathers company off of their old IMAP email service with GoDaddy Since its up for renewal and GoDaddy wants to charge him $800+ just to move over 10 users to their Exchange Hosting (not including the hosting cost of exchange). I personally hate godaddy becasue they try and get him to buy services he dosent need so im kind of fed up dealing with them. System config if it helps any: DELL PowerEdge R420 SFF 1U (x2) Intel Xeon E5-2450 @ 2.10ghz 32GB of Samsung ECC Registered Memory Dual Broadcom BCM5720 NetXtreme Gigabit NIC's (x2) 1TB DELL SAS 7.2K in RAID1 (x1) 1TB DELL SAS 7.2k (x1) 500GB WD SSD (os boot) DELL PERC H310 DELL iDRAC7 (x2) Redundant DELL 350watt PSU's Windows Server 2012 R2 64bit We currently have 2 static WAN IP address in use for the office so i don't know if we will need more (our server provider package includes 5 total) and I can get SSL Certs for the Server which is no problem. If i understand correctly you have to add server roles like active directory but my question is how would i be able to set up exchange on this server and incorporate his domain he already pays for, Set up MX Records, etc. Any help is appreciated!

I bought a dell poweredge r610, in hopes to use it for a home server. It has no OS on it, so i dont know where to start. My goal is to have a server that can A.) Host a minecraft server, B.) Run with raid for drives, and C.) Be a storage server for home. I dont know much about this stuff, but the most important thing is the storage. I want to be able to drag and drop files via the NETWORK tab in Windows 10 file explorer. Any help would be appreciated. discord is a good form of communication for me, so mine is Sin Eater#5417. Thanks in advance!

I am also thinking of getting a r410 with 2x 6 core cpu and 64gb ddr3 1333mhz ram ECC for me and my friends to host game servers on. I would also like to know if you could use a normal psu but i myself wouldn't need it. however to run all those VM's I recommend you go with 32gb 8 for Plex on ubuntu VM and 8gb for the rest, 8gb for Minecraft, Windows 10, and your media. should be perfect and the power consumption shouldn't really matter like you said at this point.

Hey guys and gals I'm a pretty ok person at servers but need info on Dell servers for NAS data storage and possible other stuff such as active directory, virtualization, etc. It would need to be very versital since the needs may change down the road and need lot's of storage capacity for lot's of drives that can run raid 1. I've looked into the PowerEdge R710 and have seen the and there is just not enough drive capacity for future use. any recomendations to servers that are easy to maintain like dell are welcome as long it can do lots of NAS storage at the least Thank you

So I have a Dell Poweredge R230 laying around I would like to run Hypervisor on, but unfortunately it has a dinky dual core celeron as a brain. Officially it is listed to only support the Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 product family, and I can't seem to find anything int he BIOS update changelog to indicate they added support to more modern LGA1151 processors. Anyone have any knowledge on this server's best supported processor?

I am thinking about building a new NAS. This is my first real NAS, so correct me if i'm wrong about certain things. I had made previous posts on the topic, but they are now outdated since I wasn't ready to purchase at the time. I am looking for a storage server mainly for backups and a plex server. I was thinking I could combine the two into something like a Dell PowerEdge r720XD but if someone thinks they should be separate, let me know. I have a mis-mosh of random drives so I think I need to use UNRaid as the main OS and then I could use CentOS for the Storage Server and Ubuntu for the Plex Server. For specs I was thinking 12 cores and 64GB+ of RAM. I think I need to allocate most of the resources to the Plex Server since there could be multiple people streaming off it at once, where as the Storage Server probably wont have more than 1 user accessing it at a time. I would like decent transfer speeds however. I was thinking I would need to add in an SSD for a L2 cache, but I saw people recommending to not use a L2 cache. These are the drives I have: 2x 1TB 7200rpm HDD 1x 320GB 5400rpm HDD 1x 1TB 5400rpm HDD 1x 750GB 7200rpm HDD 1x 500GB 7200rpm HDD These are all Desktop-Based HDD's and as they die I will replace them with NAS equivalent HDD's. My budget is $350, but there is a little wiggle room if necessary. The UNRaid License is not included in that cost, but if someone had a Free-Alternative that would be appreciated. The only thing that I can think of for other storage options are HP Proliants, but I don't know much about them. Is the Dell PowerEdge r720XD too old? All suggestions are appreciated too.

So I have a Dell PowerEdge R720 server (I'm guessing from 2011-2012) which hasn't been used in years, and recently I decided to repurpose it. A quick background on the server: It's second hand, used to run linux before I installed windows 10 on it (which worked fine for a day and then stopped working the next morning) and a few months later (now), I looked deeper into the issue and found some error related to something in the neighbourhood of RAID and my SSDs that are installed in it. Here's a quick rundown of whats wrong with the server: 1) during boot up when it reaches the RAID part and prompts me to press control R if I want to enter the configuration utility, it won't respond, and after a period of time it will show "adapter at baseport not responding" followed by "no adapter" (refer to pics). 2) after the adapter not responding stuff, when it tries to boot, it says that there are no boot media available I have tried taking out the raid controller and putting it back in, I've also tried booting with raid disabled, switched the drives from AHCI to RAID and back to no avail, ran hardware diagnostics in the lifecycle controller which threw up an error code 2000-0141 (refer to pic) and I have no idea what it means, and finally I've also tried to boot from a bootable drive using windows 10 and windows server 2012 R2 (both of which did not detect any hard disks at all when it asked me where I'd like to install). Relatively useful specs/info: 4 250GB Samsung 750 evo's Dell PERC S110 raid controller (integrated raid controller) 48GB of ram in total (quite useless to know) Intel xeon something (also useless to know) I also have no knowledge about servers at all, so I might not know what I've been doing this whole time, and more importantly why the server won't recognize the 4 SSDs in it. Also something to note, there are no blinking lights or any lights at all on each of the SSD enclosures when the server is on.

Hey Guys, I am a noob when it comes to servers, and home hosting but I just got my two Dell poweredge R410's and I am lost on how to setup the DRAC anyone have any experience in this?

So I recently purchased a Dell R710 with the following hardware: 2x X5560 2.80GHz Quad Core 64GB of DDr3 ECC ram 2x 300GB 10K 2.5" SAS drives Perc 6i integrated raid card It came with Windows Server 2016 Standard Evaluation installed on the SAS drive. But I wanted to install the OS on an SSD, so I bought a Samsung 970 NVMe PCIe M.2 250GB as well as an PCIe card to M.2 adapter. So my goal here is to install Windows Server 2016 Standard on the SSD. I purchased the windows key off of Bonanza and the seller sent me the key as well as a link for the download, (down.microsoft-oem.com/windows/en_windows_server_2016_x64_dvd_9327751.iso) So I burn that to a CD/DVD and try booting from that, it says boot failed. So I try attaching it to a USB, and that failed. I also tried using the CD/DVD as a USB one time then tried using it as a CD/DVD, neither worked. For the USB I tried both NTFS and Fat32 and neither worked. I also tried all of these both in the BIOS version and UEFI version of boot mode. I have run out of ideas so any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I want to use a dell poweredge as my home pc but some people say I need an ac controlled room or something like that or the psu will die. Do I really need that ? Or will it be just fine

Hi! So I'm starting with a video project for my diploma which would contain C4D, Premiere Pro and CAD renders. I've got an older PC which I game with and can render all of these but then my system is pretty much locked up. I also checked for a new (near) state of the art system, but pricing foiled my plan. The system I've calculated would be around 3000 EUR (I'm from central europe btw). So I thought about an older, used server, dual xeons for cheap where I'd stab if possible like a 980ti or 1050 in it. I found a lead for a DELL PowerEdge R710 which would have 2 x Intel XEON X5675 @ 3.07 GHz 6 Core, 48 Gb RAM ECC 800 MHz, redundant PSU and fans for about 300 Euro. Since I haven't layed hands on a server ever before (closest encounter was to see them through tempred glass ) I'd like to get some input about my idea. In perspective, my current system would render a simple cut 1080p video from a 1080p source in about 35 - 40 minutes. Thats a 22 minute video. Time isn't that critical for me, but It'd definitely help if this system I've found would be as fast if not faster (hope dies last) as my main rig. Another kind of monkey wrench would be that this would - as I would guess from the picture - a 2U blade. I don't have a server rack, so I'd have to run it without if I couldn't stab it into a random pc tower case. I'd appreciate any input or recommodations. My budget would be about 650 - 700 EUR (Server and GPU)

Hi, I wanted to put a gpu inside an old dell T710 server I got for few bucks, but I got some questions: 1- how do I mount it? The fans would be spitting air against the case normally as the pcie slot is up and not down, so there is little space, do I have to mount the gpu vertically? 2- how do I manage to power the gpu, since there are no cables to use inside the T710?
