Hi All, looking for some purchasing advice. Torn between the new M1 Macbook Air: 8-Core 7-GPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB for £940 (~$1300) Or 2019 i5 Macbook Air: 2c/4t, 16GB RAM, 512GB for £550 (~$760) Both are new devices. It will be used for web browsing, Netflix, productivity, etc. so doesn't need high end performance. My concerns are the thermal issues with the Intel models and the future support for OSX on Intel with the push to M1 / Apple Silicon. Are the Cons of the i5 model outweighed by the big savings? Any help would be great!

So, I recently got an M1 MacBook Air, 16/512 GBs. I'm extremely happy so far, it's fast, quiet (obviously...), efficient, and sexy af. Couldn't ask for more from a laptop. Really. Just one tiny, itty bitty little problem. The right Shift key is 'stuck'. Alright, what do I mean stuck? Not physically. The key is perfectly fine, as is the laptop itself, I've barely touched the machine in the little less than a month that I'm using it. I take care of my things, I've had computers last me with proper maintenance and care (both hardware and software wise) for up to 10 years. I am a Data Analyst and Algorithm designer, with coding background. I've also built 3 computers by myself, and have some experience with low level stuff as well. Not an expert though. Since yesterday (mind you, I'm the only one that uses this MBA), I've encountered some strange behaviour, and not infrequently. It all started when I try to log in (I had shut the machine down) and it needed my password, which I failed 5 times (I swear, I'm not dumb), before I realised that the keyboard was not registering the keys I was typing. I figured out through the "Reset your password through AppleID" screen that I was typing only Caps, and that the numbers were not showing up, but instead !@#$%^... So I figured, oh shit I pressed too hard the Shift key and screwed something up. Not exactly. Closing the lid and reopening it, "fixed the problem", because it disabled the right shift. I typed my password, got in, and starting googling. That's when I realised my right Shift isn't working, because it didn't capitalise or shift anything, yet when I clicked something while browsing it added it to my reading list (I use safari so Shift + click = add to reading list), which was HELLA ANNOYING. That's not all. In seemingly random intervals, all the good progress was again and again becoming undone, going back to the Caps Lock phase, where the right shift key was making everything caps. Only solution for that one is to close the lid and reopen it (now because I'm logged in, I can use TouchID). Here's the rub: When it's all capitals, using the right Shift has no effect, i.e. capitals + shift = still capitals. Also, pressing caps lock, i.e. capitals + caps lock + stuck Shift = still capitals. I'm smelling a software issue, because I refuse to believe that Apple makes that easily failing keyboards (butterflies anyone?! not anymore!). Haven't seen my MBA in it's natural state since then, and I'm truly frustrated. I'm gonna remap my right Shift and disable it, to not have the Shift+click unwanted functionalities, as I can't seem to solve this problem. I have found other people having the same (albeit some with the fn key) problems as well, though not many, and therefore no help. What do I do? I'm covered by warranty ofc, but I think someone should raise this issue a bit higher, so that it reaches Apple's ears. Any ideas? Thanks for your time, sorry for the long text tl;dr: Probably another case of a keyboard bug with MacBooks.

Hey everyone! (Hopefully this is in the right sub forum...) I have been working on creating my first IOS app but my 2013 macbook air (i7, 8gb) keeps crashing when i try to run the XCODE simulator. MAIN QUESTION: "Should I get a Macbook Air, Mac Mini or another solution to work on an IOS app I am building in Xcode?" (I don't really want to wait till the next apple release, I have a lot of time until the summer but after the summer I will have much less spare time to work on projects.) PROS & CONS Mac Mini I can use my current widows desktop peripherals + slightly cheaper than macbook air Macbook Air Only 100EUR more then a Mac Mini and its portable (with the LTT heat pad mod, performance should be basically similar as I understand it) I was planning on upgrading my laptop next year with second gen apple silicone with hopefully any gen 1 bugs removed Other Solutions (Secondhand older mac or renting an online mac environment) Allows me to wait one more year to get a gen 2 apple silicone laptop + Might be cheaper (but could also end up being more expensive) All alternative solutions will probably create extra complexity that will make development harder. (Its my first app and I think it's tricky enough already, without adding complexity.) Second hand might have issues with new M1 optimised Xcode. Renting a mac environment online might make it harder to trouble shoot as I wont have control over my working environment with it being in a server I don't control. OTHER QUESTIONS Is there a good "other" option I am missing? Just want to double check that the new m1 macs are the best for Xcode IOS development work, can someone confirm that this works smoothly? MY CURRENT HARDWARE 2013 Macbook Air: (i7, 8gb RAM) Windows Desktop: (2700X, 32gb 3200 DDR4 Ram, 1080TI) + 42 inch 4k monitor (great to work on when you open excel, chrome research, notes, etc. at the same time. I basically use it as a 4 monitor setup) Some really old laptops and desktops. [WRT to my app dev skills: I can make something that works in C++, Java & Python (although still way too often with excessive workarounds) I Wanted to use this project to familiarise myself with swift. As I can usually just about manage to get my code running without errors, I don't really want to make the process anymore complex than is strictly necessary] Sorry for the long post. I wanted to describe my situation without writing an essay, you can be the judge on wether or not I was successful at that. Hopefully everything is clear, if anything is unclear please ask! All input is appreciated!!

Summary Just after Apple's spring loaded event, Apple quietly updated the M1 Mac mini with an optional 10 Gb/s ethernet Quotes My thoughts I always thought that the reason why M1 Macs doesn't have a 10 gig ethernet is because it didn't have enought PCIe lanes unlike the Intel Macs, but that seems to not be the case. PCIe lanes are not an issue, it's just Apple's deliberate decision not to have 10gig ethernet at launch. But I think the reason why Apple added the option is because they have customers who use Mac minis in their server farms, Amazon for instance uses i7 Mac minis for AWS. I guess the reason why is that at launch, none of the M1 Macs have 10 gig option unless they use a USB C TB dongle. Now, Amazon and everyone who needs it can now have the option. Also, Mac minis are on sale right now Sources The Verge, Apple

I recently got two early 2008 iMacs equipped with Core 2 Duos (specifically, a E8435 and a E8235). One of the iMacs doesn't seem to work at all (although the cpu seems to be fine), while the other one has the GPU issue where it needs to be replaced or baked. My problem is, is there a way to reuse these CPUs, particularly the E8435, since I'm not planning on restoring the iMacs, considered that they're technically "mobile" processors? Will I be able to find a motherboard that supports them?

My friend currently has a 2012 MacBook Pro 13" that has treated him well. Surprisingly easy to upgrade and get to everything in it considering its an Apple product. He is looking to upgrade since his MacBook died after a family member spilled water all over it. Thankfully we were able to pull the drive and recover all of his files. He said he doesn't really need the mobility of a laptop anymore since he's not in college, and so he would rather have a desktop. We were thinking either the Mac mini or the iMac. His price point is $500 but we can push it to $700 for something like the 2017 4k iMac. We are definitely open to used and refurbished options as his budget (obviously) doesn't support the price of a new mac. He is a video editor and photographer and is used to the apple ecosystem and has advised me that he would not like to switch to windows. My recommendations are: >2015 i7 4k iMac 16GB RAM, and we could upgrade the HDD with an SSD (yes I know they are glued together with adhesive, but I am comfortable taking iMacs apart) >2017 i5 4k iMac 16GB RAM, 256 GB SSD comes standard usually >2018 Mac mini, probably would get the base model i3 or i5 with a 256GB SSD and upgrade the RAM >2020 Mac mini M1 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD What do you guys think? He thought the 27" iMac was too large for his needs so I stuck with the 4k ones instead of the 5k ones.

Photoshop has been around for so long that it’s synonymous with photo editing - So much so that Corridor Digital thinks they can do it with ANY version. Let's put that to the test... Check out Corridor Digital's video: https://youtu.be/8LkUzVexLTU

I know this is a really strange question but I'm curious to know if anyone has any good ideas on how to have a pc display appear on a Mac mini using a capture card to record/stream pc gameplay. I want to use a Mac as my main computer, but have my gaming pc to play games. I don’t want to have to swap HDMI cords each time, and it would be cool if my Mac was able to stream my pc display to discord for example so my pc can conserve resources. Similar to a dual pc setup for streaming but the second pc is actually a Mac mini. I've heard solutions such as remote desktops and KVM switches but none fully satisfy my very niche needs. Ideally I would be able to record and stream gameplay on my Mac in 1080p60, but game on my monitor with 1080p144. No clue if this is possible, but I have been stumped on ideas and would LOVE some feedback.

Hello, A month ago I have transferred everything from my previous mac to my new one with the Apple migration assistend. Now I use both macs for different things. But Google Chrome, and some other apps think I only use one mac. This means that Chrome asks me every day to login again on my old mac. I have changed both device names, I have reinstalled Chrome on both devices with removing all date from the google application support folder and still it says there is one mac signed in to my Google account. I think with transferring a device ID or something else is duplicated, but I don't now what to do now, and I am not waiting to reset one or both devices. Is there anyone that can help me fix this? So All programs and accounts see the both macs as two separate devices? On both macs this is what I see in my Google account. While I have one mac named Robbes-MacBook-Pro-qwerty and the other one Robbes-MacBook-Pro-azerty And I don't see 2 mac devices in my account, while I do see multiple Windows and android devices. Thanks in advance Robbe ps sorry for my bad English, its not my native language

Here's everything I've tried. 1) Since my Samsung T5 SSD is in Ex-fat format and seems to work properly. I backed up 3TB data and then formatted it to ex-Fat and moved the data back. It still doesn't seem to work. 2) I've tried using WD discovery to mount. It just doesn't work. Not even an error. 3) Tried Removing Password. 4) Tried Using WD Security for the same. 5) Tried mounting using the disk Utilities. Got this. "Could not mount “My Passport”. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49223.)" 6) Tried using commands in one similar thread that removes the fsck(whatever that is. I'm a first-time mac user. Been a windows user for years). 7) Tried mounting directly from the terminal. Got " Volume on disk4s1 failed to mount " 8)Tried mounting in read-only mode. Still Doesn't work. (A week ago, It worked in Readonly. Even when it was in NTFS. But suddenly disappeared.) Disk checkup says the drive is OK. And it still works perfectly fine in Windows.

Hi, I have a set of Steelserise Siberia elite prism headphones, and in POP!_OS, and Manjaro they are really quiet. On windows it sounds fine. I tried looking for Linux drivers and such, but I could not seem to find them. When I push the volume up to 150% the bass distorts and starts to sound really bad. How can I make them louder without distorting and make them normal?

Hello, I have an Apple iMac (Late 2015, Core i5 5575R, 8GB DDR3 Ram and 1TB Hard Drive), it is feeling too slow for me to use it as my daily driver, and the screen also flickers all the time, it goes black and it comes back to life in a second, I don't know what to do now as this is my first Apple Computer, it is so slow that if i CMD A and type something at the same time it will get the rainbow spinning wheel and it will take 6-7 seconds to process what i did and show on the screen, any recommendations and help are welcome. Thank You.

Hey there people! I know I'm going to get some burns because of the fact that I own a Mac, but maybe I will catch the interest of some of you. I recently bought a Mac Mini (late 2014), with these characteristics. I want to upgrade it to a combo SSD + HDD because you know why, but I can't find a way to know if it is possible or not to add a second SATA connector (like some you can find really cheap on Amazon), or if it comes with a PCI connector (like it seems to be the case, via iFixIt). So i wonder what's the best solution: Buying a standard SATA SSD and replace the HDD with it Buying a standard SATA SSD as well as a kit with two SATA connectors and keep both in the Mac Buying a NVME SSD and plugging it in the elusive PCI port. Thanks in advance for your help!

So I ended up with a 2011 Mac Mini "Server" Core i7 2.0GHz, 750GB HDD, 128GB SSD, 16GB RAM. I was having some OSX issues out of the box, like it not recognising the Admin password in some parts of system preferences etc, small things.. Then it got stuck in an endless boot loop, which was frustrating. Managed to reset the PRAM & NVRAM & then nothing. Managed to get it into recovery mode so I could reinstalled OSX, it was offering Lion, that was fine, then it gave me the error "not all components could be downloaded" okay, so i'll just create a bootable copy of OSX like I have done in the past. This is where I run into issues, so the latest version of OSX I can run on this is High Sierra, no problems, i'll just get a USB drive & get the installer from Apple, nope, it doesn't exist in the Mac AppStore any more. Okay, my next step was to get the .DMG from Apple of High Sierra & create a bootable via terminal, that didn't work either. Now I have managed to create a bootabale USB drive from inside Windows, but whilst it is recognised on my MacBook Air, it's not recognised by the Mac Mini when I try & use it to boot from at start up by holding down option, and I can't get it to boot from it on my MacBook Air so I can install it on an external SSD, i've run out of ideas on how to get OSX back on this Mac Mini. I've run out of ideas. All I want to do is install High Sierra onto this damn thing so I can use it, it shouldn't be difficult but it turning out to be...

Okay so, a friend of mine gave me their iMac, model A1312, and saidsaid it was broken, allegedly the hard drive inside it had failed and needed a repair. Now, after trying to boot up the system, i found that there was no OS found on any drives(shown the the flashing question mark in a folder icon), upon entering the iMacs drive utility menu through the recovery, I had noticed that the drive had failed completely, not just some corrupted files on the system, there was no verification available nor were there any repair options, and such i wiped the drive. After a few days, i decided to try and install it myself, so i grabbed an old(but working) hard drive, and found the original operating system for that model, the Snow Leopard version 10.6, after trying to boot with that drive, the same no OS found symbol appeared, and after holding down the option key to choose a drive, there were no prompts available, so i couldn't try booting from that drive. A few days later, I obtained an official install CD for the Snow Leopard OS and inserted that, to no avail mind you, and nothing i found online had worked, no keyboard shortcuts during the startup, clearing the PRAM, nothing has worked so far. So that brings me to here, wondering if i had just missed something stupid and small, or if there is actually no way to restore the system, any input or feedback i can get would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I recently got a Quadro 5000 for my old 3, 1 Mac Pro running El Capitan. Since, its my secondary desktop I figured I would let it Fold sometimes. I haven't been able to figure out how to configure a GPU folding slot. I have drivers and Cuda Version 8 installed but those didn't really make a difference.

Budget (including currency): 1,200 - 1,500 USD Country: U.S.A. Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop (for some light 3d modeling) It is time to let my six-year-old iMac 27inch go. It's been my workhorse for video and photo-production, but its 2021 limitations include slow render times, a worthless GPU, and slow RAM (just to name a few). Last year I left my job in TV to start my own independent video production company, which means my budget for a new computer is really only as much as I can get for selling my current mac (which is roughly 1,200-1,500). I know this is low, but I also have to keep some budget held back to replace the 27inch 5k monitor that I will be losing as well. It would be impossible for me to adequately replace my mac with another at that price point, so it's time for me to make the switch. However, this decision leaves me with questions that I absolutely cannnnnnnnot find answers too anywhere on the internet. Keeping in mind that my only goal is video production, this is a small list of some of my concerns. -Can a PC play and edit any of my Quicktime H264 or ProRes files? -Can a PC play any BlackMagicRaw footage recorded onto an OSX formatted SSD -Can I use or access any of my OS Extended Hard Drives on a PC (I.E. all of my prior footage and projects files... speaking of... -Can I open Premiere Pro project files, made on a mac, on a pc -I refuse to use Android phones, is this a problem? I'm not as worried about prior projects as I am my backlog of video files of which I have at least 15 Terabytes spread across multiple drives. Any information or suggestions on this would be helpful, I would love to hear from someone who made a similar switch. Also, any recommendations on a pc build that meats my needs and budget would be appreciated as well. For reference below I have added my current specs just as a comparison. Thanks! iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014 3.5 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 24GB 1600 DDR3 AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2 GB

I have an iMac Pro at our high school in our theatre for video production. In our film department we also have a network in there where we use NDI a lot in it. I was wondering if theres a way where the iMac can primarily use their network in the theatre, but also we can still access any SMB servers or any NDI sources on our network. I know you can connect to multiple networks at the same time if you have the adapters available. But I don't know if Mac is capable of doing what I want to do. They are entirely different subnets I believe. The films network is just connected on a router from the schools network (so double NAT I believe). The theatre network I think is a standalone network without any internet (they sometimes connect the iMac wirelessly to the schools network if they need internet access).

Hi - please don't kill me for asking about a mac lol - I have no where else to ask I'm in desperate need of some help. I've had a mid 2010 21.5" iMac for the past 10 years and it's given me no trouble at all. The day that I decide to sell it - the hard drive fails. To cut a very long story short, I'm replacing the hard drive and I need to know if it's possible to use adhesive strips (to reattach the display) which were designed for the 21.5" 2012 iMac on my 2010 model. Any idea?

Hello people, So I guess I am not really a "Gamer" I only do some light gaming. 4 years ago, I build my own "gaming" PC. It was basically the cheapest PC I could build with at the time modern hardware that included a dedicated Graphics card (i3 6100; 8 gb of RAM, GTX 1050 ti). For studying, I got a pretty beefed up MacBook Pro 16' a year ago (2,6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7; 16gb of ram; AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB) about a year ago. Today, I installed Windows through bootcamp in the hopes of having a little better performance and the portability of a laptop. Turns out, a Rise of the Tompraider benchmark on the same settings and monitor show the Mac to be about 15/20% slower... Does that make sense? I mean, I know, you don't buy a Mac for gaming... but still... that is 3000 EUR of modern hardware against what was 600 EUR 4 years ago... I didn't expect HUGE improvements, but I didn't think it'd be worse... Hope you can help me understand this a little better. Thanks in advance!
