Help me make my iMac possible to game!

Hi Guys, i've got an old iMac (2006) lying around in our garage doing nothing, screen works but GPU is dead. Would it be possible to buy a raspberry pi and use the iMac screen as a monitor for the pi? Cheers Ben

I am trying to help a friend out that has a problem with his iMac. Recently he tried logging in to his iMac and it was lagging. Once he logged into his iMac it showed a black screen. He waited a few minutes for the iMac to load in and it eventually shows the graphic user interface such as the task bar. He tried clicking his hard drive and other programs; it didn't load the programs or the hard drive. My friend eventually wipes his hard drive storage and clean installs the latest iMac os. Yesterday it showed this image as he was booting into his iMac. What does all of this mean? Thanks if you can help.

Hi guys, Want to build a PC and have my iMac as a monitor to save some $$. I plan on putting in a GTX 1080 GPU. I'm confused about the Mini Display port in this situation. Seems there are ways to screw this up. What should I know? What are the caveats, if any? Thanks.

Im probably oging to buy the Xbox One S but because I'm cheap I'd rather not buy a new monitor so I was wonsering is there any way to connect my imac as a monitor to an Xbox One S?

However, after watching Linus Tech Tips I am starting to get excited with the idea of building a custom PC. However, while comparing Apples to PCs, the iMac always seems to be a better value with significant benefits. Hi everyone, still new to the forum and getting my hands dirty with Linux (again been a long while since I used it). I have a problems that I am trying to solved, so I can bring my iMac 24" back to happy life. In the past 6 months (more or less) my iMac has been shutting down for no reason. In the middle of me trying to browse the web, working on others things and sometimes at start up. I have replaced the hard drive, and memory thinking that those were the problem. But it is still doing it. Not sure what to do to fix the problem at this point. Some guidance would be greatly appriciated in solving this problem. Thanks in advance, LD

Hi! I don't frequent this forum very often at all (but am a Floatplane subscriber). I'm hoping that someone may be able to at least give me a blunt yes/no answer to my question. I have an iMac that's been crashing at random intervals over the past couple of months, each time with the same cause (as far as the console logs are showing). NVRAM/PRAM and SMC have been reset. Latest version of MacOS completely reinstalled on new partition table. Have also installed to external disk. Errors still appearing. I've since then run MemTest86 and have found this... Could this be linked to the kernel panics that I'm getting, despite the panics reporting there to be a fault related to thunderbolt? panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff7f8e89c71b): "UPSB: thunderbolt power on failed 0xffffffff Completely understand if this isn't the place to come. It was just my first thought and short of tomorrow's Apple Store visit was my last resort. I really don't want to have to pay those repair costs if it's just a case of a RAM swap! Thanks in advance!

I don't know if this is the right place to discuss this topic, but I confused about which one should I get? The 15" Macbook Pro or the iMac 5K both of them are great, but which one is better? for everyday use and a little bit of programming?

Also, I think it would be fantastic if Apple actually uses their AX chips to offload lighter tasks, saving alot of power and potentially operating even when the computer is turned off for like updates, but I guess this makes more sense in laptops than desktops

Yes, I realize this probably isn't cost effective, but I was curious if it was manageable. I saw an 5k iMac for part on Craigslist had the classic thought, "but it's not upgradable... or is it?" New to building PC's and though that before diving way too deep I'd ask around about the idea first. I'm assuming that this could be done, but with laptop components and some case mods. Just wondering if there would be any proprietary Apple cables that would keep you from using the 5k display. Or any other glaring issues I'm not thinking of for that matter.

I'm looking to replace my nearly 10 year old iMac with a new PC. I looked at the Core I7 iMacs but I think they are pretty overpriced. I'm not a hardware guy so I went to two local computer chains to see what they would recommend for a custom build, with them doing the assembly. My requirements were:- Something that will be fairly future-proof - Ability to occasionally edit 4k Video from my go pros and camera. (as a hobby for my ATV riding, not looking to be a youtube star) - Able to run multiple applications at a time, Have a movie playing and still be able to browse using Chrome and do work tasks such as word or excel. (running multiple chrome tabs and Excel at the same time currently sends my Mac into a stroke)- Able to run a 34" ultra wide screen and a 4k secondary screen. - Not a gamer so that wasn't really a consideration but maybe a driving game could be fun. (Played Doom on PS3 and got vertigo for 2 days so I don't think shooter games are for me) - Price, no real budget constraints but I don't want to spend money for the sake of it. - I have a new 4TB drive I never used in my NAS that I'd like to put in the system as well. - USB type C support. I'm sure everything will be USB C soon so might as well be able to use it. - Have a SD card reader on the front of the case Things that changed since I gave the stores my requirements list: - I told them I wasn't too picky about a case, I don't need it to glow like a space ship. But I've decided to get a new desk and now I will be able to see the case so maybe something that has a little more style than a plain black box. - I've been reading about overclocking, all the cool kids are doing it so should I? If so, do I need to get liquid cooling? I've watched some videos comparing the I7 6700 to the I7 6800k and the feeling seems to be if going for that might as well go for the 6 core one or drop down to an I5. Do you find yourself all alone in an ocean of Windows or Linux, or do you find yourself with the majority of illuminated apple logos? Where could they improve? What could they bring back? What was your first Apple computer, where did you get it, how much did you buy it for, and what was it like when you first started it up? No we are not Apple fanatics, we are not silver metal casing and white illuminating logo lovers, we just prefer things a little.... well you will find out what the last word will be. My first apple product that I got was an old iMac. I don't remember the specs or year but it had the clear plastic all over it. I remember powering it on... wow. Plus it was free (it might have been stolen.... but who knows). The previous owner did not wipe the hdd. So a quick call to apple and $20 later I had some software on the way. I tell ya that was a awesome feeling. Installing the software and seeing all the animation was intoxicating. Windows could learn a thing or two from Apple. I hated to see it go, but $75 bucks wasn't too bad. My first purchased Apple computer was a 2012 Macbook Air 11 inch. I love this thing. I got for $400 from a classmate on the second semester of college. The feeling of powering it on and playing with updated software... ohhhh gives me a hard on. I love it because it is simple (took a little getting use to but with some homework I wasn't doing too bad). The OS doesn't take much resources like windows does. It is clean looking and I like that. Would I replace my Windows pc... nope. I love my Win. 7 pc. I will never let it go unless it's reached it's end like Win XP has. Software running of XP is impossible. I find myself to be in a mix of both windows and mac. I never see linux out in college. I don't have any hates just a few dislikes like how you have to go around your elbow to get to your thumb for certain tasks or finding things, or getting to a certain file or program or moving something. The command button is not placed in a good spot. Please share your experience.

Hello! For the past couple of years I've been dying for an OS X computer. I have always loved the way the os has looked recently and have tried to get one for a while. At this point idk what I should do and I'm not too knowledgeable with apple products yet so I need help in my decision process! Here are my options: My friend gave me an old 2007 Mac Book Pro A226 (I think) but it won't charge and I did not receive the power cable. I could attempt to replace the left logic board to potentially fix this issue but I've seen lately that this computer is VERY unreliable. Option number 2 is to purchase a Mac Pro Tower on Ebay which would come with two Xeon CPUS A1186 at 2.66 GHz, 4Gb RAM and a 7300GT Nvidia GPU (Could potentially replace with a 1050/1050ti) OR I can attempt yet another Hackintosh which I hate because I have no idea what I'm doing even when I look at forums. (Apple still hasn't supported the goddamn RX 480 yet) Or I could try to use a HP Pavilion Dm4t 2100 to run OS X. Anyone know if that would work?? And yes I know ya'll do not allow for pirated crud but I'm not asking about how to do it or any further info about it. Please consider it.

I currently have the Gigabyte Z170X UD5 TH motherboard. It has two thunderbolt III ports in a form of USB type-C. I would like to use my iMac as a monitor, but the mac only has two thunderbolt II ports in a form of a mini display port. if I buy this adaptor from apple, would it work? http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter? If it does, can I use the power of my dedicated graphics card of my PC instead of its integrated graphics? iv tried connecting my iMac and my graphics card directly using a mini DisplayPort to display port adaptor but it didn't work. so now the idea is that, what if I could connect my imac to my motherboard via thunderbolt and use the power of my graphics card.

I'm looking to get a new machine for photo editing and some light video editing on Davinci resolve. don't want to get anything too high end. Definitely not a 9900k, perhaps something like a r5 3600 with a gtx 1660 n 16gb of RAM, and the iMac has the 9600k and rx580x. I very much prefer the overall look and user experience of the iMac than anything else, but the iMac can't be cleaned which means its bound to have a limited lifespan. Any thoughts? Also, am I making a wrong choice with the hardware for what I'm doing?

I'm currently toying around with buying a new iMac 2019, but in an effort to save money and for just "the fun of the build," I've considered buying a 4K base model and then simply upgrading it to meet my desired specs. I know the 27" CPU and ram can be upgraded, but I wanted to get some clarification that I won't run into any thermal or compatibility issues with the following build: -Worth noting, no gaming or video editting on this machine. Not too sure of the budget, but under £300 would be perfect. I'd rather buy used because that's more cost-effective. I don't mind buying single parts or stuff etc. The iMac she's using is a 21.5-inch mid-2011 2.7GHz i5, Radeon 6770M 512MB, 4GB 1333MHz RAM that I upgraded to 8GB years ago, and a 1TB SATA HDD. She uses this for media consumption, web browsing and transcribing (youtube and docs open side by side). The main reason for upgrading is the woefully slow HDD and general performance deterioration. Also, my 10yo sister plays Minecraft and Star Stable on the computer and it always looks choppy, which I would like to have fixed! Upgrades I have in mind: SSD! This is the main thing right now. I'm going to need about 500GB SSD. That should be enough as she's only using around 330GB of her 1TB HDD. CPU with at least 4 cores that can handle multi-tasking well. Liking the idea of a Ryzen CPU. Or maybe something like an FX 8350? Not sure at all... help me out! RAM: I would like to get 16GB into it at a good speed, but 8GB will have to do to start with I think in the budget. GPU: Something that can do a decent job of running less demanding games like Minecraft and Star Stable at 60FPS minimum on 1080p. PERIPHERALS: I will need an IPS monitor because she's an artist, and she does care about this. As do I. 21.5"-24" 1080p IPS and close to 100% sRGB. Already got the other stuff.

ITS ONLY IDEA RIGHT NOW (and sorry for bad English) Hello Everyone! Here's a thing. I've got my father old 27 inch IMac 2012. I hate apple company, but it doesn't change a fact that their All -in-one Computers looks great. Anyway let's go back to the topic. So as you may know, IMac from 2012 have a common issue with... GPU. It could burn itself down because of malfuctions of motherboard after something between 2-3 years. Of course, you may find working IMac from 2012 that never burned up, but not this time. For my misfortune, same problem ocured with this one so I can't use it as second screen. I don't like throwing things away and I love design of it. So the idea pops up. Why can i not build a standalone monitor? --OR-- Buit my own All-in-One. ( either way I need to do first idea) And here's a problem. IMac ( or I will be using word money bag) have connection ONLY to motherboard, so controller is on it. I don't even know, is that standalone controller for this screen even exist. I was looking, but i couldn't find anything like that. If i want to go to my second step, it's going to be harder: 1. Holes and ports. If i will use it as all-in-one i need to: -change ports from 2.0 to 3.1 /3.2 -make holes for ports like HDMI, DPORT and audio. 2. Screen as a case opening = bad idea or badly done. Srsly.. I hate this "safety" and "warranty" feature of my money bag. I think of a way to have really simple opening. Like rails in drawer or additional screen protector form the inside, with some hook or something, to get this off easily for future upgrade for example. 3. Space, Power Supply and heat. I know I can use miniITX and heatsink from producer, but what's with power supply? Which GPU should I put to not overheat my computer? For sure I'm planning to use AMD Processor with their heatsink Like Ryzen 5 3gen For motherboard GIGABYTE B450 I Aorus Pro So here I am - begging for some help, because I want to use this thing. + I think it's could be nice idea for even future video, but it's only a dream.

Hi all, long term fan of LTT but a new member of the forum community here. I have a 2012 iMac I’ve been running Bootcamp on for gaming ever since I picked it up brand new, and the GPU finally died just last week after 7 years of pushing it to its limit (I know it’s the GPU because it boots OK, but freezes and black-screens in a couple minutes every time). I wanted to know if it’s possible to run an eGPU on an iMac on Thunderbolt 2 with an internal burnt GPU? Or does the internal GPU need to at least be functioning correctly in order for this to work. I don’t have the budget to pick up another iMac or even build my own high-tier gaming PC right now, and I just upgraded my internal HDD in the iMac to a 2TB SSD 5-6 months ago to speed up booting and application load times. I don’t want that $$ to go to waste just yet. Any alternate suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance all!
