Before anyone gets pissed, this is not a defense of bad practices for any company but rather a genuine critique in the loss of quality in the Windows platform. I used to be an avid Windows fan and user (had the phone and everything), I switched to Linux for quite a few years and currently daily drive an M1 MacBook Pro. There are negative practices that Apple and Google both partake in which annoy me to no end (like the complete absence of repairability/upgradability in Apple Products or the spyware that Google's software has become). 1.) Ads/bloatware A paid product should not have sponsored applications installed nor should it install applications without my distinct permission. This kind of behavior is the mentality of a piece of malware. The fact that in Windows the only way I've found to turn it off too is using registry edits is ridiculous. Windows isn't the only ones who do this nor is it the only Microsoft product that does this, but I certainly find it to be the most egregious, especially considering it will reinstall these applications you've removed every other update or so. Also, Microsoft, MY CLIENTS DON'T NEED THE XBOX GAME BAR INSTALLED ON ANY OF THEIR MACHINES, LET ME REMOVE IT!!! 3.) Microsoft Accounts & Office 365 How come Microsoft Accounts are required to set up Windows 11 (I know the work around, but still)? I don't want one, nor do I want to have to set up every machine for my clients with one. Let it go. Apple I'm including you in this one as well because while you'll let me set up a machine without an Apple ID which is better, you still send out annoying reminders occasionally like Windows. Knock it off you two. Also how come an Office 365 Account can't also be a Microsoft Account but a Microsoft Account can also be an Office 365 account? If its an account through you, it's a Microsoft Account and it should behave as such end of story. 3.) Browser switching Stop with the guilt trip about Microsoft Edge! Yes I understand it is more efficient and yes Microsoft, you finally have a decent web browser built in, but people have traditions and platforms they prefer. Stop the guilt tripping, stop the pain in the *ss set up to change the default browser and calm down. Its one button after install to change your default browser in Mac, Mac will still let you know that Safari is better in their opinion, but after that they seem to just let it go, which is how it should be. Linux is even better with this, they'll just let you switch, no guilt tripping, no "this version is better", just a simple switch and done. 4.) Allowing non-administrators to install applications through their application installer I discovered something funny, non-administrator users can install applications on their work PCs for my clients as long as they use the .msix through Application Installer. Why? They're not administrators so they can't install applications on their own. I don't trust them with that power regardless of whether the application is from you or not. 5.) License Upgrading Sometimes machines with Windows Pro aren't available and we will occasionally (only during emergencies like someone is starting and needs a machine immediately) purchase a machine with Windows Home which is more readily available/cheaper for the same spec typically. We will then upgrade the license to Pro so that we can join the machine to the local Active Directory (why isn't this included in Home). To do this we need a Microsoft Account to run the purchase, why can't I just provide the payment details, YOU TAKE MY MONEY AND THEN ASSOCIATE THE LICENSE WITH THE MACHINE AND STFU! 6.) Killing Off Hardware Why are you not allowing some systems to upgrade to Windows 11 that are otherwise perfectly fine? I understand not everything can run, but there are plenty of 6th & 7th gen Intel chips that can run your shitty OS fine enough to merit a client to save a couple bucks in the short term. Plus these machines make for great second hand devices for those who don't have the cash for new hardware, so why not just let them run the OS. It's bad enough they want to use your products but now you have to gate keep them too? I get that some hardware is too old, but I think you're killing off way more than necessary and idk why. Also for those who work around it and get Windows 11 going on unsupported hardware, don't be a dick and put a watermark there, people usually do this to keep hardware they can't afford to replace atm going for just a bit longer. Apple, you're guilty of this too and personally this behavior is unacceptable!!! 7.) Phone Integration Phone Integration on Chrome OS for Android users and iMessage for iOS users is fantastic, Windows for some reason has not been able to get on board. Anytime I've used it or helped clients who use it, its constantly losing access, dropping messages, not getting notifications and the only thing that fixes it is to completely reset it, like what the heck? A lot of these complaints weren't present not too long ago, I actually loved Windows 10 in the beginning. I'm not here to just crap all over Microsoft and talk about how Apple is superior because it's not (title might be a tad click baity). What I want to point out and discuss is that there seems to be a major decrease in the quality of Microsoft Windows releases to the point where right now while I wouldn't by any means state that Apple or Google is king or anything, they're definitely at the moment the better options for most applications in my perspective, and that list of most applications is only growing. They're also less whiney about everything, I think thats what pisses me off the most. I feel like all of Microsoft's products except for Office have been going down the drain lately and it's sad. In WAN show Linus said "you want a hungry Apple" and I could not agree more! I also want a hungry Microsoft, I miss the Microsoft the made the 360 and released Halo 1-3 and was corporate but also a little edgy and willing to take some risks, but ultimately was determined to manufacture quality products despite the hiccups on the path to do so (Windows Vista). I feel like that Microsoft is dead and it's thrown a once life long Microsoft fan into the Apple eco-system. Hopefully it changes. Thanks for reading, I just needed to rant after a long day of dealing with Microsoft BS at work. Xbox is pretty much dead and honestly I'm so close to just liquidating my Xbox stuff and being Nintendo only. Nintendo has their own issues too with the whole emulator nonsense and copyright striking everything with their music, but they at least have exclusives and I don't see ads on the Home Screen of my Switch, I only see them when I go under Nintendo News which makes sense and is fine as long as it stays in there like it has thus far. Windows & Edge have continued to get whinier and whinier guilt tripping you to stay on Edge and begging people to upgrade to their half baked mess of an OS Windows 11 all while shoving Microsoft Accounts down your throat with Teams, using their products feels like talking to a possessive romantic partner whose worried you're going to leave them, its obnoxious. Windows Phone, they just killed it years ago after not putting anymore effort into it despite buying a whole company for like 5 billion dollars (really worried these studio acquisitions are a parallel to what happened with Windows Phone, a last ditch desperate half assed effort)

To make a long story short, we had a developer who recently stopped working for us. He helped created an app for iPhone in Xcode that downloads its data from a Google Firebase (Firestore) database he set up on our account. Today we got this quite scary email (as seen on the attached screen shot below). Unfortunately we're in between developers and don't have any Firebase developers at the moment (and the previous developer was fired and remains unresponsive to us). I'm only a UX-Designer and I honestly don't understand a word from this email. Anyone that knows Firebase that can help me understanding this email? Does this mean our database is publicly available on the surface web (so for example search engines can crawl/index it)? What do I do about this?

Good afternoon, I've been having some trouble recently with my Samsung devices to get them connected to Google's find my device app. Since updating to oneUI 6, the option of using Google's find my device has been replaced in settings with Samsung's own Galaxy find service. In my opinion, I shouldn't need a manufacturer account to use my device, so I refuse to use any services requiring a Samsung account, instead using the google equivalents. However I've been unable to get my devices to appear in the google app, as it requires a setting to be enabled to get them to show, and Samsung has now hidden that setting to encourage their users to use the more limited samsung service. I would have thought that completely removing the alternative would violate anticompetitive laws, so there's probably still a way of enabling it somewhere? Does anyone know a way to enable google find on oneui 6? Thanks.

I'm being tasked with learning more about an issue I've never heard of before, but it's for a client, and I can't get access to her computer before I have an answer. I know - tough spot. Here's how I heard it: This individual, let's call her Sarah. When Sarah gets an email with a Google Meet link, she will sometimes be forwarded to the wrong page, a certain older Google Meet, even though the links are different. This also has happened, she claims, with Google Forms links. I've never heard of this, and I'm having a hard time finding any hints googling about it. She uses Safari on MacOS 13.x, and this is through Gmail. I'm sure she's never done any browser maintenance, and my first thought is to just clear her cache and cookies, but that's a rough solution for this type of person, for the number of things she'd have to log in to again. Any hints would be helpful.

I'm simple watcher of all different youtubers, as i was watching video it was above 1080p it was running smooth as usual out of nowhere there's loading and it switched to 480p and I can't manually change it because it's telling me there's no 1080p or above just 480p and below. And i wish 1080p should be default to watch because most people can enjoy 1080p anyways. Anyone has same issue? Or am i punished for using YouTube app on andriod... With ads.. Internet should be fine because i can download from steam fine. Like what's going on why am i being punished or is it a bug? Am i forced to be pirate?

Summary Google has been working on a new, open-source technology to replace third-party cookies for tracking users called Federated Learning of Cohorts (FLoC)[0]. They have launched a trial on Chrome (versions 89 and up) which automatically opts in users who sync Chrome using their Google account and have not disabled third-party cookies[1]. The trial currently only extends to users in Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, and the US. EFF has been openly critical of the technology[3] and just launch a site called "Am I FLoCed" to help users determine whether FLoC has been enabled on their browser[4]. DuckDuckGo has also shared criticism and updated their "DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials" Chrome extension to block the new technology[5]. Quotes My thoughts I stopped using Google Chrome (and most Google products) a few years ago because of growing privacy concerns with the company, so you can probably guess that I'm not a fan of this. This tech only benefits advertising companies like Google. They want to optimize their ads by collecting user data and using it for ad targeting. I don't feel any better having the trackers identify me as an intersection of groups instead of as an individual. The silver lining here is that other browser vendors haven't expressed any intent to implement the tech. Hopefully it doesn't propagate to other Chromium-based browsers. Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I just noticed that Google seems to have removed a lot of TikTok links from its search results. In the screenshots that I've attached, when Googling "tiktok" no direct link to the main website (www.tiktok.com) comes up, and in the other when searching "khaby lame" none of the results link to his TikTok profile or any of his TikToks. I'm curious if it's just me or if others are seeing this odd behavior as well?

I live in Poland. In Adsense, you need to enter the taxpayer's details. Why are there only 2 countries listed there, America and Ireland? I heard that Andsense money is paid either from Ireland or America. What's better?

I have a TP Link C211 camera looking at my front door and I've linked it to my Google Home account on the Nest Hub. But I only get Voice notifications, when I first set it up, the first few times it was also showing the clip of the motion at the door and what not. Now it just says there's motion at the front door but I have to tell it go to the camera screen to see it. I can't leave it running 24/7 on the camera screen because after a while it goes back to home screen. Any advice is greatly appreciated

My iPhone 6S from 2015 got seven major versions of iOS from iOS 9 to iOS 15, and still, to this day 8 years later, regularly receives security updates from Apple. The same is true for my iPad Air 2. Which Android phones have great long-term software support? I’m asking about phones that has a great track record historically, so Google’s claims about 7 years of updates in the future doesn’t count since Mr. Pichai breaks promises more rapidly than cheeseburgers are consumed at McDonald’s.

I have a Google Pixel 3 XL and I would like to know if it would be better to go with a Pixel 7 or 8 as an upgrade

Hi everyone, I am pretty new to the community and not sure if this is the right place to put this. My Pixel 6a started to randomly reboot and get stuck in a boot loop right after the android 14 update. After a couple of tries it would turn on, this repeated thrice and now it does not turn back on. To be clear I did not have a single issue with the phone before the android 14 update. After a lot of hassle their support team picked up the phone for diagnosis. They diagnosed that there is a issue with the motherboard. But I came across the november android security patch which specifically mentions this issue and aims at fixing it, have attached a link and screenshot to it below. https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/242705137/google-pixel-update-november-2023?kgs=f2ffcd4f59636a1e&shem=igass&source=sh/x/gs/m3/5 When I checked with the support team regarding this, they outright denied this and told that a software update cannot brick a phone. Even considering it was a hardware issue I was sold a lemon in the first place. They have given a repair estimate to replace the phone at full cost(360 usd approx.) and I am liable to pay the full price because my phone is a month passed its 1 year limited warranty. I am pretty clueless in what to do now, any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hello y'all. When YouTube decided that it was over for the "sort by: oldest" feature on YouTube channels, many of us chose to download the "Sort by: Oldest" Chrome extension to return this functionality. Recently, the extension had been earmarked for end of life due to YouTube returning this functionality (seen here in the Chrome Extension page for the extension). Unfortunately, today many using the extension received a message that the extension now required permission to read website data on any website you visited. While the extension publisher notes that all data collected is for "internal clickstream use, not personal data," it is impossible to trust any closed-source platform with this data and I strongly urge anyone with this extension to delete it immediately and to not grant these permissions. If there are more updates to why this extension is overreaching its permissions, please reply to this post.

For our youth movement we use a google group to share our agenda with everyone (about 36 members) Usually I just add them to the group and they can see and use the agenda. For some reason one of our members can't see it, I have tried removing them from the group and adding them again, I've tried removing the group from the agenda and adding it again but he just isn't able to use it. Does anyone know a possible fix or has anyone else had this experience? Thanks in advance

Google released an OS update that causes pixel phone users (6, 7, 8, and Fold) that are using multiple profiles (a built in feature) to suddenly lose all access to either their main profile, or their entire phone altogether. Contacting support will only have them walk you through how to factory reset your device, and very rarely are they even acknowledging that this is a known bug. I had this happen to me, and ended up having to factory reset. The bug is still active and reproducible on my Pixel Fold. Steps to reproduce (and walk back from the edge) WARNING: This bug behaves differently for different pixel models, this process worked for me to confirm the bug is still active without locking up my Pixel Fold. I do not guarantee that even on a pixel fold that this process will not cause data loss to your device, so proceed with caution. 1) Verify you're updated to the latest version of Android 14. Turn on multiple profiles. Make a second profile that is NOT the built in "Work" profile. If you don't switch to the second profile at all your phone will continue to behave normally. 2) Switch to the second profile. AFTER THIS STEP DO NOT REBOOT YOUR PHONE UNTIL YOU HAVE FINISHED STEP 4!!! As an added bonus make sure the wallpaper is a different color than your main profile's. 3) Switch back to your main profile and lock/unlock the device, open up things like your photos app that use storage. For me, my UI started going weird. I'd unlock my phone but all the lock screen text would remain. I'd hit the home button to return home but nothing would happen until I lock/unlocked my device. Also maybe 10% of my UI elements would match the colors of my secondary profile's wallpaper, not the primary profile that I was on. IF YOU REBOOT YOUR PHONE AT THIS STEP YOU WILL LIKELY LOSE ALL DATA ON THE DEVICE THAT IS NOT BACKED UP. 4) Delete the new secondary profile that you added and then turn off multiple profiles. The phone will continue to be weird until you reboot but it should come back up normal. There's an article about how Google has told a couple users in support chats that they're "working hard on the issue" but without Google publicly stating anything I'm taking that info with a grain of salt. There are also people saying that this was being reported by Pixel 6 owners before the wider rollout started and that Google ignored the bug reports and rolled it out anyway. More than a month ago, the Fairphone 5 was released. After Linus his good impression on the Fairphone 4 and his personal investment in "Framework", surely you could expect a Fairphone 5 review from him. But nope, despite all his claims that he is a big fan of sustainability, long software support and repairability, he published videos about Apples new phone, Googles new phone, A laptop on Aliexpress, game consoles with illegal game collections on Aliexpress, a Temu gaming setup, etc... If he is honestly so "invested" in a better future for consumer hardware. Why does he keep creating videos about products form companies that are mostly fishy ( Chinese webshops and their sellers ) or products from companies that already dominate the hardware space ( Apple, Google ) and not actual products that were designed to change the way consumers handle their hardware? He got the phone for free, he claims he likes products like that, but refuses to publish a video on it? The only possible explanation I have is that Framework is working on a smartphone. Or he's simply someone who just tells people what they want to hear.

It’s been about three years since this started. I've been a Youtube Red subscriber since like day two of its release. I don't have great internet where I live so it was perfect for me to download videos and watch on my phone when I was somewhere without good connectivity YouTube premium allows you to download videos for offline use. I also use that folder to keep as a backlog of what I want to watch and everything worked fine. I could cast from that folder, add to queue and everything was good. 2020 rolls around and all of a sudden the add to queue button doesn't work from that folder. Everything else works as normal but if you click the add to queue in downloads, nothing happens. It will say that it added your queue, but they never do. I gave it a few months thinking it was just a glitch, but it never went away. I called Google sometime in 2021. They spent a week looking through this and told me it was how this was supposed to work. Functionality just gone and the ui says it is there. Felt a little gaslit, but let it go and have just kept dealing with it. Last year something changed that made that folder even worse. Now when you hit play on any video from that folder, it queues up every video in the folder from newest to oldest. For context I keep about 70-100 videos downloaded at a time and I'm downloading things that I want to watch. It's extremely stupid as if I have a bunch of older vids in a let's play series, I want to watch them first. This is a stupid way to do things. I reached out yesterday as I got tired of it again and spoke to an ai that didn't know what I was talking about. Has anyone else noticed this issue or had any luck sending this broken function to Google where they acknowledge it? I know I can use the watch later folder, but if I'm traveling and not driving it's nice to have something to watch on a plane. Would love to try and fix this since they are raising the prices of premium and this should be solved.

Android 14 comes to pixel devices. Personally the advertised new feature list seems a bit, mild. I am still waiting for manual controls for their camera app https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/4/23900207/android-14-update-download-google-pixel

I have seen in several videos that LTT members use google docs. What advantage do they have? I personally only used google docs for school, for my other chores I prefer to use onlyoffice (also libreoffice) or since I go to university I've been using the office package for free as a student. In my opinion google docs is useful for those who have to make several people work on the same document, thanks to the functionality of the drive, but when I was studying it was inconvenient for me to have an internet connection in order to access all the documents. What do you think? Have they ever explained why they use google workspace? Also, if I don't remember well or I dreamed it, tell me

Hi, I've been getting spam messages in my Gmail that don't let me unsubscribe. These emails don't have any text in them they only have a picture (not attachments just straight up picture). I can see those picture's only on my phone. When I open the mail on my PC, I get nothing. Right Now I don't have any pictures or video of the mails. Because I've been deleting them and I got the idea of asking help here only after deleting them. I'm sure those emails will come again. So, when they do come. I'll add the pictures. But I do have a picture of a filter I created to auto delete these emails. I contacted google about this but the rep told me to report these emails. What this spammers have been doing is. They have taken my mail ID. Lets say john.doe69@gmail.com is my mail ID. They send mail to john.doe69NK@aol.com, john.doe69aw@aol.com and more. Since john.doe69 is the main thing all of those spam messages come to me. Essentially these pictures have fake unsubscribe options in them but clicking on them redirects to 1xbet or some sketchy site hell once it redirected me to google.com All of this spam messages have one thing in common. They all come from accounts having the words aol.com, winkerstar.net and asahi.com in their sent from addresses. I will add the pictures. When I get them again. If anyone has gone through this in the past please help me. If anyone from LMG have look into this and help. Maybe we can put a end to this kinda crap in gmail. Thank You

HOT TAKE: YouTube shorts broke YouTube. I'm struggling to find my LTT & other great content I curate for myself. [Think this is actually a good discussion for video] The aggressive YouTube shorts algorithm take over and auto feed addiction is impacting the existing video experience / Feed negatively. Content is being redirected towards shorts revenue which is of very poor quality and reminds me of early YouTube and not in the direction LTT & other media and content groups have spent a decade + improving quality of. I'm watching a ton of low impact latent viewing content I wouldn't naturally enjoy at this rate of consumption and am not actively engaged. My solution is to force the algorithm to think you don't want the content which is a bandaid cause there is no toggle for which feeds you want to see. Am I wrong for thinking this should be an option...to control what Feeds/Services on youtube I want to watch & have better addictive feed back potentially? This isn't about weather the content is good or bad, or of quality...but it's making me debate deleting YouTube cause it's barely useful now... Rant extended: Google search & services are over all worsening the user experience. The deal was you get large ad revenue in exchange for access to solid performing services and tools that we ENJOY using. If I'm not enjoying it anymore...at some point I'll just stop
