At this point I am frustrated and tired. I want something that works. I don't care Linux or Windows. Can somebody guide me through the process to help start my storage server. The build consists of an i3-4360, 16GB RAM, GTX 660ti, 4x4TB WD Red with 500GB Boot Drive. My router is an Asus RT-AC3200. What I want is something that can store all my files and I can access them locally and in different cities. I want to drives in a JBOD configuration because they are for backup and not redundancy. I want to be able to access the files on my main windows computers, my mobile devices, and stream pictures/videos to my raspberry pi running OpenELEC aka Kodi. This computer also is intended to stream steam games. How all of this is done I do not care anymore I just want a solution that can work. And I want someone to help my through the steps I have to go through with my router, network, installation etc. I have looked into several programs like Bittorrent Sync, OwnCloud, Seafile, Syncany, Syncthing etc. I tried installing OwnCloud on a LinuxMint installation first but it wouldn't properly install and I couldn't find guides that differed in installation method. I also tried installing steam on it but I couldn't get my GPU recognized no matter how many drivers I tried using from the Device Manger section. So I went the Windows route and installed Windows 10 because at least the video drivers and steam would work automatically so I only would have to worry about server. But that proved more of a hassle because OwnCloud isn't supported anymore due to their own complications in providing a good open source offering. So I looked around and found Seafile. I have it installed but cannot get access to the web UI. I understand an FTP server would serve my needs for get the files locally and externally but when I tried installing FileZilla server I ran into an error with the program and I didn't understand it at the time, so I am open to using it if someone can help me with that personally. Also samba server can also be used in my case to stream to the raspberry pi as I understand it. There are many options and I would really appreciate some proper help with this. If you need any more information please just ask what you need. This is more trouble than all the guides I looked at before getting the parts implied. "Follow these steps and you can have a server running in less than an hour". I have spent a week and am getting nowhere with this. Keep going back and forth from windows to linux let alone decide on specifically which method to use. I also have access to a SFTP server my friends and I rent, we share the space and I have about 1TB available. So I was thinking if there was a way to let my server connect to it and use that as a back end of sorts to just transfer my files. That way I don't have to open up too many ports on my router to be able to access the server. Because it's shared I do not want any files stored on there, but I can use the site somehow if someone can explain. Thank you for your time and patience with my. *Sorry about X-Post EDIT: Spacing

I have a FTP server in my home that I use daily. The problem is that I want to use it outside my home network with port forwarding. FTP uses two ports, so I set port 21 to a random port (Ex. 6768) and then set port 20 to another random port (Ex. 6769). FTP does not work over the internet for some reason and I don't understand the two port thing. How would my client know that data is being sent on another port if I connect with 6768? I also heard since I am using a NAT/Firewall my FTP is much harder to configure. This whole thing doesn't make sense to me and I need help. Thank You!

So I'm trying to setup a friend of mine a user account / login and folder on one of my VPS servers where he can dump all his website files in and host it from, I currently have a working user account added for him but it has full system access and isn't restricted - He can browse the entire VPS file system and read everything. How would I go about making him have access to view and modify only a single directory and its sub-dirs, Like you get when you use a web host and have FTP access to your folder only? For example say the user account is "bob" and I want him to only be able to view and modify things in the "/var/www-bobs-site/" directory only, How would I go about setting this up as I have been browsing the internet for a while and read quite a few tutorials and guides without finding what I want to do here (It's probably me typing the wrong things in)... I already have the apache virtual host setup and ready, I just need to work out how to restrict his user account. The VPS server I am setting this up on is running Ubuntu Server 13.10 and for FTP we use SFTP. Are there any good guides out there to setting things like this up anybody knows of? Thanks for any help!

I recently purchased a hosting subscription and a domain from 1&1 Hosting. From the 1&1 control panel I set up an FTP account. I downloaded FileZilla and logged in, created a 'content' folder and inserted my 'index.html' file. I then went to the domain manager on the 1&1 control panel and directed the domain to the 'index.html' file. However when I use the URL the 1&1 not published page shows up. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Hey there, I just updated my laptop to 8.1 and now I'm having some troubles with Windows Homegroup (the only other member is my desktop)... Since I'm also planning on running Linux on this laptop and on my desktop, I'm looking for a free universal FTP solution... I tried to run FIlezilla before but to no avail... I also tried VNC but the speed was too slow... I'm on a 100M network (with plans to go gigabit in 4 years) if that matters... No, I do not want to depend on a cloud service since the files that I'd like to sync/copy are greater than 20GB.... Thanks in advance... -Hermit

I need to set up a ftp server for my desktop computer. I'm running windows 8.1 and I have installed the server onto my machiene. I'm using the port 14147 and the router is set up to port forward right. My problem is that I can't even connect to the server using the "filezilla server interface" I haven't set a password or anything like that. So I'm completly stumped. I thought that this would just work considering i'm using my local machiene to connect to the FTP server. I have also allowed the server and the server interface throught the windows firewall. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. And if there is another way to do this simpler than i'm all ears because this shouldn't be this hard to set up.

Video Tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIA-jVY8mHo Text Tutorial Introduction LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP In this tutorial will teach you how to turn your fresh server install into a working website masterpiece. The steps in this tutorial require the user to be the root user on your server. Get $10 FREE Credit towards a VPS - DigitalOcean Step one - Installing Apache To install Apache, open your SSH client and enter the following commands: apt-get updateadduser USERapt-get install apache2 Step two - Installing MySQL To install MySQL, open your SSH client and enter the following commands: apt-get install mysql-server libapache2-mod-auth-mysql php5-mysql Once you have installed MySQL, we should activate it with this command: mysql_install_db Finish up by running the MySQL set up script: /usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation Enter your current root password, Then it will ask you if you want to change the root password. Go ahead and choose N and move on to the next steps. Now go ahead and say yes [Y] to all of the questions Remove anonymous users? [Y/n] yDisallow root login remotely? [Y/n] yRemove test database and access to it? [Y/n] yReload privilege tables now? [Y/n] y Step three - Installing PHP To install PHP, open your SSH client and enter the following commands: apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-mcrypt After you install PHP, add index.php to the beginning of the directory index. nano /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/dir.conf It should look something like this. <IfModule mod_dir.c> DirectoryIndex index.php index.html index.cgi index.pl index.xhtml index.htm</IfModule> - PHP Modules PHP also has a variety of useful libraries and modules that you can add onto your server. apt-cache search php5- Terminal will then display the list of possible modules. Once you decide to install the module, type: apt-get install [module name] You can install multiple libraries at once by separating the name of each module with a space. Step four - Setting up Virtual Hosts In order to make Vhosts work we have to set the Apache directory. nano /etc/apache2/apache2.conf Near the bottom you will see a bunch of Directory's copy and paste this into there: <Directory /home/USER/public_html/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride All Require all granted</Directory> Now we need to make the site. nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/USER.conf Now enter the following: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin admin@[member='localhost'] ServerName name ServerAlias yourwebsite.com DocumentRoot /home/USER/public_html/ ErrorLog /home/USER/logs/error.log CustomLog /home/USER/logs/access.log combined</VirtualHost> Next we need to make the directories we are linking to. mkdir /home/USER/public_htmlmkdir /home/USER/logs After you have made the directories you can enable the sites: a2ensite USER.confservice apache2 reload Step five - Installing FTP To install FTP, open your SSH client and enter the following command: apt-get install vsftpd In order for you to be able to edit the files we need to give the user owner of it. chown USER:USER /home/USER/chown USER:USER /home/USER/*chown USER:USER /home/USER/public_html/ Configuring FTP is easy, to open the config file do: nano /etc/vsftpd.conf Change the following: anonymous_enable=NOlocal_enable=YESwrite_enable=YESlocal_umask=022ftpd_banner=Welcome to my FTP Server Restart FTP and Apache and you are good to go! service apache2 restartservice vsftpd restart Source: http://timcole.me/tutorials/how-to-install-lamp-and-ftp-on-an-ubuntu-server/

Im interested to see what people though of Free To Play the movie. I'm not much into Dota but I think it was an awesome documentary, well put together and just great all round. Any of you people seen it? Liked it? Disliked it? Thoughts? Heres link: (I don't think this deserves to be in PC gaming because its broad, but mods move it if you really want)

Hi guys and gals! So I need to run networking cable from my upstairs cave to downstairs livingroom and I decided to go through floor/celling instead of stairs. My dad suggested to go the same hole that CO pipes are going, which is nice, less drilling and general mess done. The problem is that CO pipes aren't exactly cold, which is nice in most cases, but not this one. I got Cat6 FTP 10 meter cable that I need to run close to 100C (212F) metal and I'm kinda worried. Well, these copper pipes can go up to 100C, but won't be as hot most of the time. My question is how bad will that effect lifespan of the cable, interference (if any) and if it won't just plain melt within two weeks I mean I can always drill a bit further from those and avoid some headaches, the question is do I have to? Thanx

Can is there a way i can wirelessly stream my steam games from an external hardrive? I plan on making a steam machine but is there a way i can stream games from an external hard drive to the machine AND my gaming pc? What would be the drawbacks? Would i have to use bandwidth from my limited internet cap?

I often have some filetransfer running from my main machine to my nas. During that I sometimes game, but then my ping goes up to 600ms. Could I solve this problem with a dedicated Ethernetport for gaming? If yes, how do I set it up? Thanks for your help!

Just assembled a new server for private use and tried to install proFTPd on it. Made some f*ck ups in the configs and have tried to uninstall it. apt-get remove proftpdapt-get purge proftpdapt-get --purge remove proftpd I have tried using these three commands, but they all come up with the same thing. Reading package lists... DoneBuilding dependency tree Reading state information... Doneproftpd-basic is already the newest version.0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. So nothing has happen? Did also try whereis proftpd To find and delete all files manually, but still without luck. I have stopped the process, before doing anything. So if any one know a way to COMPLETELY (with configs and other stuff) delete/uninstall proftpd, then I would like to hear from you.

I have 3x2TB hard drives and a smaller one for an OS. Basically I want to set up an offsite backup for my PC, as well as a fileserver. I've looked into WHS 2011, but realize that the drive-pooling has been pulled, but that means you can still RAID right? Available Platforms: And I've also looked into things such as UnRaid, FreeNAS, ZFS(which from my understanding, works with FreeNAS). People are saying that UnRaid is much better than FreeNAS, is more stable, and can take any number of drives you throw at it to expand your array which is something I'll be constantly doing so that is a MUST-HAVE feature. I want part of the array to act as an offiste backup for my local machine, but would also host a fileserver for over the internet tranfers. I am interested in making this as secure as possible. Protocol & Ease: If I use any one of the possible platforms, be it WHS, UnRAID, or FreeNAS, what transfer protocols are available? I know of FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, and SMB...but what would be your best bet as far as connecting to a server go be?. I feel that FTP would be the easiest to deal with from any machine with something like FileZilla, but isn't the HTTP domain access that comes with WHS really usefull as well? Or does it make more sense to just use something like LMI Hamachi and map the RAID array out in my local machine(which would be less accessible from other places). Security: Finally I would love to have it as secure as possible. Basically, how secure can I get these tranfer protocols to be and is it even practical (as far as speeds go) to have such a good security? Any insights & advice is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Home Server Build Questions and Suggestions
MrLewisMHarris posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
Hey All! I am going to be buying and building a NAS box, and wanted to share the build for pre-planning, and some questions: Uses Using as a home FTP LAN gaming like (minecraft or Counter-strike servers) and a 24/7 teamspeak server. Parts For the parts I didn't want to go overkill, but this is what I could come up with (Any suggestions or questions would be welcome!) : Case: Aerocool QS-202 Mini tower case - (Amazon Link) CPU: AMD A4-4000 Dual core 3.0Ghz FM2 CPU - (Amazon Link) 2nd CPU Choice: AMD A6-6400k Quad Core CPU 3.9Ghz - (Amazon Link) Motherboard: ASUS A88XM-A FM2+ (Amazon Link) RAM: HyperX FURY 4GB 1600MHz DDR3 - (Amazon Link) PSU: Corsair Builder Series CXM 500W Modular 80+ Bronze (Amazon Link) HDD: 1TB WD Caviar Green - (Amazon Link) Optical Drive (Optional): LiteOn IHAS SATA DVD-RW Drive (Amazon Link) Reasoning I am going with the Aerocool case because it case good airflow. The CPUs, First the A4, because I read on another review (that I looked for in my history but it's filled with pron so couldn't find it) that it is a good cheap CPU for home servers, but I feel that it's a little too cheap to be good. The A6, for obvious reasons, because it is considered a good CPU for all round use, so wouldn't sweat for the server. Next, I went with the A88XM because it really compliments the CPU, and because I don't need lots of PCI expansion slots for the server, and because it features 6 x 6Gbp/s because obviously it is fast, and I will be using an SSD in the near future. RAM, mainly because it is cheap 1600Mhz, PSU because it is actually cheap and reliable, and Optical drive Is optional because I might just take the one out my gaming PC instead to save money. Lastly the Hard Drive could be changed, but since 1Gbp/s = 128Megabytes / second, and the WD green's max transfer rate is 150Megabytes / second, it makes sense that there's no reason to use faster Drives because the network speed is a total choke. Questions Is there anymore cost effective solutions for the CPU, or any that could be a little more expensive but is still very fast for a server PC? Would this PC be able to run all the things I want it to run? (a game server, teamspeak, Filezilla, etc.) Would this server be better off running a server OS (Like Linux or WinServer) or could I just put Windows 7 on it (maybe I could dual boot them... hmmm ) Last question, would there be any reason to buy an external server instead to be able to have external access at a cheaper price. Thanks for reading (if you did, I know a lot of people just skim the large walls of text) and thanks in advance if you are going to give me answers- 3 replies

Hello guys, I want to have a Filezilla FTP server but it is just not working out. I have tryed all the guided on youtube but with none of them i am able to acces the server from outside of the network. It might just is the firewall that isn't configured correcly but i dont know. If you are able to send me some pictures or guides I will be very pleased
