Hello there, I am helping a friend figure out some networking problems and run into the following issue. Some ethernet jacks throughout the house have the problem that devices connected to it don't get an IP adress from the router. It's defenitly a problem with the port, because the same device gets an IP on a different jack in the house and vice versa. I first suspected it to be the cable inside the wall but because this problem exists on multiple jacks with different cables running through the that all stopped working at the same time, it seams unlikly. The ports on the switch that connect the jacks to the router all work normaly. I tried giving a device a static IP and then connecting it to one of the problem jacks but I get the same result. One of the devices is an VoIP phone base station and it shows if it's connected over ethernet. When plugging it in it shows that it has an ethernet connection over the problem jacks but doesn't get an IP address. This also isn't limited to one type of device, it happend with an AP, the phone base station and Windows devices. For the networking setup, the friend has a FritzBox as a router and from there he has ethernet connections to 2 different switches. All the jacks inside the house are connected through those switches. The problem jacks not only on one switch. Has someone an idea why this is happening and how it can be solved?

Im having a problem that has been occurring for a while now. Every time I boot up my pc I have to wait a full minute until my Ethernet kicks in. I keep all of my drivers up to date and I tried rolling back the Ethernet driver and no change. It started when I changed my Ethernet switch to something older temporarily and I recently bought a new one.

Does anybody know what this means and how i could fix it because i tried to look it up but i couldn't find anything. And i don't know if this is a problem but on my ethernet port it says 2.5Gbps but in my drivers thing it says 1Gbps full duplex

My PC is 2 years or so old now, and I have never had any network issues at all beforehand. But now, since yesterday, Windows has been unable to detect any ethernet cables plugged into my mobo. The on-board WiFi will also randomly stop showing up in Windows and I will have to power cycle the PSU to get it to show up again. I've also had several issues with USB power cycling when I am playing games and stuff like streaming on Discord (I just updated my BIOS from F12e to F36d (oops) when trying to fix this, so no idea if the USB issues have been resolved yet). I have tried: Using Gigabyte's APP Center to update all my mobo drivers and BIOS Using different ethernet cables to check for a faulty cable Using a different device to check for faulty ethernet outlet Running Window's "Network Reset" feature Simply disabling/re-enabling the ethernet adapter PC Specs: Windows 10 Education 64-bit ver. 10.0.19044 Gigabyte Aorus Pro WiFi X570 (BIOS ver. F36d) AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060Ti GAMING OC Corsair RM750x White Series (750W PSU) G.Skill Aegis 32GB DDR4 3600MHz RAM (although I noticed just now that Windows says 2133MHz, would updating BIOS reset XMP?) Sabrent Rocket 4.0 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 Any help with troubleshooting further would be greatly appreciated! Luckily I'm able to get by on WiFi for now, but I'd like to know if I need a new MOBO/PSU/CPU asap, thanks so much!

Hello all, as the title suggests, I'm currently scratching my head trying to find any quality settings regarding streaming my Series X to my home office Desktop PC. I currently have the console in the living room, connected via ethernet, and my desktop PC also has an ethernet cable connected, run through the floor and the basement, etc. So far, I've been really impressed with the low-latency and nearly synchronous native audio and video, however, it is very artifact-y and lacking in color. Are there any settings at all in the Windows 11 Xbox App to improve the video quality of the stream? Would these settings perhaps be on the Series X console itself? Or... am I s$%t outta luck and should be looking for an active HDMI cable instead? (Not really in my budget rn.) Thank you!

Hi all, I recently moved home and got myself a 1GB internet service from a new ISP. When I connect everything up to wi-fi, my speeds on my phone are around 500-600mbs which is ok for me since the router they provided me is a wi-fi 5 (AC) one. The issue stems to my desktop PC when going WIRED. My path is: ONT > ISP router provided > power line (TP-Link TL-PA717 capable of 1GB) > My desktop PC I have done the following: - I resetted everything but the ONT so far - I'm using CAT-7 ethernet cables - The accompaning app for the powerline says it's receiving around 600-700mbs - Looking at settings on windows, they all display 1GB receiving. But my browsing is limiting my speeds to 150-170mbs whenever I do a speed test. Any help here? Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone, bit of a noob when it comes to networking. 2 years ago, my family and I finally switched to fiber optic Internet. While it is very fast, issues still exist. Originally, when we first got it, I was connected to WiFi with a TP-Link USB WiFi adapter. While it "worked", Internet speed was pretty slow compared to what was advertised, because I was far from the modem/WiFi router downstairs (about 60Mbits/s up and down). When the pandemic hit, because I was following studies that were computer-dependant, we decided to install a WiFi repeater in my room, in the upper floor. I plugged my PC to it with an Ethernet cable, and speeds really changed ; nowadays it's around 350Mbits/s, so quite the difference. Sadly, we realize nowadays that it's not ideal. At the same floor are two other people, one who plays a lot and one who works on a workstation. Both are connected to WiFi, and because my WiFi repeater is the closest, they are connected to it. Unfortunately, their download speeds are pretty mediocre, around 30Mbits/s. I thought it was because I'm "gathering" a lot of bandwidth or something, but then again, I don't know much to it. And when I tried and disconnect my repeaterr to "force" their device to connect to the router itself, Internet speeds are faster but not by much. Nowadays it's risen quite the tensions. So, I'm asking for help. I guess the ideal setup would be: me getting a WiFi repeater or some kind that only allows Ethernet connection, so that I'm still able to get the speeds I have without "hogging" the bandwidth. giving them the repeater I had, and plug it to one of their rooms, with at least the workstation or game console plugged to it via Ethernet, just like I did. Or maybe they are other solutions, and I'll be happy to read them! Keep in mind I'm the one who knows the most about hardware, but networking still feels really complicated for me. And I can't get my head around it, with words like hotspots, amplifiers, range extenders, DHCP, routers... it's becoming quite the mess. A few things I want to clear in case you wonder : WiFi router/modem is the original one that we got, no NETGEAR routers or anything. I believe our WiFi is WiFi 5, but I'll have to look into it. My internet provider offers some kind of repeater that can switch our WiFi to WiFi 6 if it's directly connected to the router... I don't know if custom ones can do that, and if I get one, is it worth to use it not as a repeater, but directly plugged into the router? I live in France, so things might not be the same compared to the US or else. Already sorry if things are more confusing than they should, but I'll take any help I have. Don't be shy if you need anything, or if I missed anything. Thanks a lot!

Hi, I posted this on general discussion at first and now posting here. I'm trying to get a wired connect from a modem upstairs while I'm on the bottom floor. House is wired for cat 5 and would like a more stable connection. There's wall ports on the top floor, by the modem, and down stairs by my pc. So I'm trying to plug into a panel like photo attached to a panel upstairs that looks just like it with a coaxial cable to the modem upstairs. The cables I'm working with work perfect and have been tested. So I'm asking if there's one port I have to plug into or if the wall port is busted, plus no matter what I do, in windows says ethernet needs to be plugged into while ethernet is connect. Pls help and would love any insight...

Question is pretty much straight forward. I'm currently running an ethernet cable running from my Powerline adapter to my PC so I can get fastest internet speeds available on my line. The router and other equipment is located downstairs on the main floor, where all of the required cabling comes inside my apartment. I can't move that hardware upstairs to my room. I now have a different router (a Cisco EPC3925, supplied by a previous ISP) that I want to use as a LAN. The reason being, I've got a Quest 2 and would prefer to use Air Link. Now, knowing that the downstairs router does broadcast Wi-Fi, it's not a viable solution for me, as the two devices are too far apart and the experience would not be the best. I wanted to connect both Ethernet cables into my PC, and still have access to the broader internet, whilst being connected to the Cisco to use Air Link simultaneously. This has worked before, as I tried it out multiple times, but it's a hit or miss. The reason why I say hit or miss is because sometimes my PC recongises the Cisco router as the "main" router and cuts me off from Internet entirely. It completely disregards the connection that actually connects me to the internet. Is there a way I can set my 100Mbit Ethernet port as the one for Internet exclusively and the 1Gbit port for LAN only?

So I started using a powerline ethernet about 2 months ago since my router and modem are across the house and latency would be really bad while playing games. I had no problems until about a week ago when my ethernet was all of a sudden slow. I have the "TP-Link Powerline Ethernet Adapter Starter Kit - AV1000 Gigabit Port, Plug&Play, Ethernet Over Power, Nano Size, Ideal for Smart TV, Online Gaming, Wired Connection Only (TL-PA7017 KIT)" which is the name from amazon. I haven't had anything new plugged in recently that might affect this that I know of and I have reset my internet and pc. PLEASE someone help. Thanks :)

my gf has her Xfinity modem/router in her downstairs living room and she lives on the second floor, her mom doesn't want an Ethernet cord going all the way from the living room to her room so what ive done is put one of those wifi extenders with an Ethernet port on the bottom and plugged it in at the bottom of her stairs a room away from her modem/router i ran it all the way upstairs into her room into a second wifi router (for wireless vr which works great but thats just her local connection) then from the router to her pc, and let me tell you her connection sucks, her connection is constantly fluctuating and her discord freezes constantly probably every 20 min, idk what wifi plan her mom uses but im wondering what i can buy to improve this whole situation, i was thinking about those 200 dollar Xfinity mesh network extenders and run 2 of them from the living room to her room but idk if that'll help

I'm planning on upgrading my home network. My modem and router are in one corner of my house, and my bedroom is on the other corner. In my room I have my main gaming rig and a second computer for Twitch stream encoding. I don't want to purchase and run 2 cables, so I was wondering if there are any good inexpensive 3 port ethernet switches (1 input, 2 outputs) that do not require external power and are worth my time. Both machines can and will be used simultaneously.

Hello All, To get this out at the forefront: this is the first desktop that I have built in around 10 years...so to say I'm rusty would be an understatment, however, everything (sans ethernet) is working great. I have a Gigabyte Aorus X570 Elite w/ Wifi motherboard paired with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X. The onboard wifi is working great, however I cannot, for the life of me, get the onboard ethernet to work. I have tried everything that I know and all that I could find on the interwebs to no avail (and yes, the LAN adapter is enable in the BIOS). I created a help ticket on the Gigabyte website and (after returning from vacation) found their answer: "Send it back". However, while on vacation I ordered a USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter. I am now thinking that the issue is not physical as, to my amazement, the USB ethernet adapter will not connect to the internet either. I have tried various cables, and bypassed my ethernet switch and plugged directly into the modem. Nada. The lights on everything blink as they should (per the directions), windows says the adapter is working fine (as it did the onboard ethernet port) but it will not connect to the internet. The windows help diagnostic "tool" says that neither adapter has a valid IP. I'm stumped; at least I have wifi for the time being! Thanks for reading my rambling message and I hope someone has an idea.

Alright, so you know how most routers have a USB port that most people who use it use it for printers, NAS use with flash drives and external hard drives, and LTE connectivity. Considering that wireless routers with 2.5Gb ports cost so much, and with the knowledge even the slowest USB 3.0 ports are 5gbps, why haven't more people used their router's USB ports for plugging in 2.5Gbe and 5Gbe adapters? (my best guess would be that it wouldn't be directly connected to the switch chip) Hell it's to the point where I couldn't find any discussions or even pictures of the practice online.

So I spent all day trying to figure out why I was only getting 90mbps until I realized goddamn Spectrum was throttling me. I did my tests directly from the modem. Once solved, I put the router back in line an I'm back down to 90mbps. I switched to an older router and same thing. My router is capable of 1.8gbps. TP-L AX1800. What gives?

Hello! First and foremost I'm not a very tech savvy individual so if more pieces to the puzzle are needed in order to assist on a solution to this situation don't hesitate to let me know! I've noticed when allowing my cousin to play Roblox on my PC (a very light game that shouldn't have any issues running) that the ping is sky rocketing. I know your internet isn't the only factor that manipulates ping but I haven't always had this issue occur, as of recently it has been effecting the gameplay. I've tried restarting my internet on multiple different occasions as well as adjusted graphics in-game and ensured I was playing on the nearest regional servers. Anything help, thank you!

I want to start of by saying I have tried a lot of stuff, and I am lost and in desperate need of help. Xfinity's Xfi app (which soon will be the only way to config their shitty router) does not display devices that use ethernet. It only displays devices that use WiFi. I tried releasing IPs and getting new ones, I have tried disabling ipv6 (which people say is the issues) it did nothing. The devices show up in the offline list meaning devices connected to ethernet not only not show up, but they also only get detected for a few seconds after being plugged in by ethernet and then they go offline. Any idea what the issue is? Any fixes? as a new router/modem is not an option.

Idk if this is the right place for this but worth a shot. So my internet is having problems. It is slower than usual all of a sudden and when 2 people or more are playing, it seems to basically shut down for a few seconds very often. Is this a sign of a bad router or are there other things I should try?

Hi all I have a couple of questions about my ubiquiti setup and about some SFP+ to RJ45 adapters. I wired my house for 10GbE (Cat6A) and for some of the devices I want to be able to utilize the full 10GbE connection. I recently bought a Ubiquiti USW-Aggregation which has 8x 10Gb SFP+ ports on it. I also have 2 other switches, a USW-Enterprise-8-PoE and a USW-Pro-24. My router is a UDM Pro. I plan to use the Switch Aggregation to connect the switches together as well as use 4 of the ports for computers I want to have 10G on and also one port for a NAS. My original plan was to aggregate 2x 10G SFP+ ports together to connect the other two switches together which would use up 4 of the ports, 2 10G links for each. The other 3 would be used for desktops around the house and the last one as I said would be used for the NAS. Is there any reason the Dream Machine Pro would need to be connected through 10G rather than just 1G? My internet connection is only 1G so the only reason I could see the need for 10G would be for the NVR access to the drive in the Dream Machine Pro but I doubt you'd need 10G for a mechanical HDD. Let me know if I'm wrong My other question was about these 10Gb SFP+ to RJ45 adapters. I need these to connect a few desktops to my Ubiquiti Switch Aggregation. Is there any difference between these? Are any brands better than others? FS.com option 1 Amazon option 2 Amazon option 3 Amazon option 4 There's also this "Industrial" one from FS.com. Thanks for anyones input!

So I've been setting up a new network in my house and started dabbling into Remote Desktop Connections. Just for fun I decided to start up a game on the computer that I was remoting too (Doom Eternals) and it was super laggy is there any way that I could make it faster? (Via: 1000000000GB ethernet cards and networking cables and or Routers with EPYC CPU(s) just what would it take to game on a computer in the other room with a RDC or something similar?)

Hi. I'm trying to install some wired ethernet from mat router to my desk, with a switch half-way along and using solid-core cat6 ftp cables and wall-mounted network sockets at the entrance/exit of the router/switch/computer (see diagram). However, this is my first time wiring ethernet sockets, and I have a couple of questions. The idea is that a the bulk cable that I have will cover the distances, with the network sockets at each end. The router/switch and my computer will be connected to the sockets with cat6/6a patch cables. My first question is whether I should use any cross-over wiring at any point in the system for the wall sockets (we've got fibre to the house, in theory with gigabit internet if that makes a difference)? Second, the cable that I have to go between the sockets has a 9th copper wire in it separate from the twisted pairs which I presume is used as part of the shielding. Should I cut this away for the part of the cable inside the socket (there doesn't seem to be anywhere for it to go inside the socket)?
