Alternative to MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision XOC?
thejackalope posted a topic in Graphics Cards
I've used both of these programs but I really don't like the ugly interface apparently made to impress tween gamer youths, or the poor graphing options. I just need fan control and performance monitoring, but not overclocking. Is there any alternative that uses a normal Windows interface and allows graph customization and logging? Rivatuner doesn't seem to have been updated for many years.- 9 replies

Hey, all! I bought my mother a new GTX 1060 (3gb) for xmas. It was an upgrade from a 960. After switching out the GPUs, uninstalling old/installing new drivers and etc, FPS is still stuck between 10-40 fps in Destiny, etc @1080p. I know this should be much higher since my father's PC has a 1060 as well and it runs a smooth 60fps. Her CPU is an AMD A10 7850K APU. 450w PSU, 8gb RAM. I was thinking there might be a bottleneck so I ran MSI Afterburner and it reports that her CPU runs at 90-100% while the GPU stays under 40% load when the game is running. This would be a very significant bottleneck - which leads me to believe that the issue might be a failing CPU. However, I've never come across this issue before so I may not know what the hell I'm talking about. I've never used Afterburner as a diagnostic tool so I'm not sure if I'm understanding this correctly. What do you guys think? Thanks for your help! tl;dr: Afterburner reports: CPU load = 100% while GPU = ~35%, is this a failing CPU?

My problem When i boot up my pc gpu fans go to 100% for a couple of seconds then shut of ( as normal ) but 1 of the 3 fans wont slow down. When i reinstall the drivers everything seems to work but after a reboot the problem will accure again What i tried Using afterburner/gpu tweak 2 to control the fans. It seems i can control the 2 silent fans but the one i want to slow down wont react Reinstalling drivers: works but after rebooting the will be spinning again Can you guyd help me out her my specs CPU = i5 4670kGPU = GTX 1060 6GB PSU = Cooler Master B700 ( 80 plus bronze ) Motherboard = B85M-E ( Micro ATX ) RAM = 16 GB DDR3 ( corsair ) Quote this

For some reason my new 1080ti is not using any of its memory in games? This is causing massive lag in game and I can't play anything other than really simple games without having lag. Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it please? Thank you!

Hello, I have an MSI AMD Radeon R9 390X GAMING 8GB and I have run it at stock it's whole life. Today I decided to use MSI Afterburner to try overclocking it to see how far I can push it. I got the GPU Core up to 1180MHz from 1050MHz and I got the Memory up to 1800MHz from 1500MHz. I had to crank the Power Limit to +50% (Max), the Core Voltage to +100 (Max) and the Auxiliary Voltage to +100 (Max) to get the card stable. Surprisingly the temperatures were fine and the card never hit it's thermal limit. My question: Is +100 on both the Core voltage and the Auxiliary voltage too much? Can I run this 24/7 like this? I ran Superposition benchmark, Minecraft, Rust, Rocket League, The Witcher 3 and Battlefield V several times for a while and noticed no artifacts or crashes (tried to test variety of DirectX 12, 11, 9 and OpenGL games). I noticed a decent performance boost (around 10% to 15% or so). If +100 is fine, is there an option to go even higher? (I have the power and thermal headroom). Any help is appreciated

Hi So like the title suggests, I am trying to overclock my Msi gtx 970 and I have noticed that (at this level of oc at least) the different software I'm using is all displaying different scores. The software I'm using is Unigine Heaven, Msi afterburner and GPUZ. The core clocks are reading as follows Unigine- Core 1685 Msi Afterburner- 1571 GPU-Z- 1483 I have attached a print screen so you can view the scores for yourselves if you wish I have tried re-starting each piece of software (thinking this was maybe some soft of refresh issue) but the values didn't change in each case. Does anyone know why this is occurring as I don't know which to take as a true representation of my GPU clock speed. At this stage I cant say whether it is stable or not- it seems to be semi stable (I looked online and others seem to have got similar speeds stable). Thanks in advance

Hi Everyone I have recently needed a little extra power out of my GPU (in order to run a super modded skyrim better) I have increased the clock speed by 20.65% (without touching the voltage) using MSI afterburner. I am using GPUZ to measure the increase in clocks etc I have noticed that GPUZ has a box for GPU boost speed under its clock section. I know that with cpu overclocking many guides strongly suggest you disable turbo boost as this often interferes with the overclock speed. I have fully overclocked my gpu without touching voltage in both the clock speed and memory speed. My simple question is this- as I increase the clock speed of my gpu I have noticed the boost speed also accelerates in line with the clock speed- how does this work with GPUs? Why is GPUZ still showing a boost number that's higher than the oc clock speed? Does boost speed not interfere with the oc speed like with CPUs? And if this is the case how exactly does boost work? As without any voltage change my gpu becomes unstable (at higher speeds) so how is it able to produce more power without destabilising itself? Thanks in advance!

The pictures show what items I have enabled on the OSD for MSI Afterburner for reference. I have a few questions about what some things mean. 1.) Does Mem/memory usage refers to the amount of VRAM currently being used? 2.) What's the difference between the temp and usage display for each individual CPU thread and the ones that just say CPU usage and CPU temperature? 3.) Is the RAM usage known to be 100% accurate? I checked the system requirements for the game I'm running (Spec Ops: The Line) and even the recommended RAM amount is 3GBZ but the OSD says I'm using slightly more than 3GB so I wanted to check the RAM usage display's accuracy. 4.) I limited the fps to 144 using the Rivatuner thing for Afterburner to hopefully prevent coil whine from crazy high fps running the game. (about 300-350 I think? And about 3400 I think during cutscenes) This seems to have restricted the GPU load/usage to about 43-53% yet only about 783MB of VRAM is being used. Shouldn't the amount of VRAM match the percentage of GPU usage/load? Example: in this case I just stated I would've assumed that about a 50% would make use of closer to 4GB of VRAM. It seems Spec Ops is using less than 1GB of VRAM so why is the GPU usage even at 50% with the fps locked to 144? 5.) I have my monitor set to 120Hz even though it's rated for 144 because I have adaptive half refresh rate set for Skyrim so I don't get that tornado messed up physics problem from exceeding about 60fps. If the fps in games is capped at 144 by Rivatuner but my monitor is set to 120Hz will the difference cause any problems for games that my 1070 can run at 144Hz? 6.) What is frametime and is that something I should pay attention to? If so what are considered the preferred range of values for frametime? Sorry to ask so much at once but I figured it's better than making multiple topics about all this and asking questions is one of the best ways to learn. ? To the mods: I wasn't entirely certain where to post this topic but if you feel it belongs in a different area then I'd appreciate it being moved there so that I have the best chance of getting all my questions answered.

good evening everyone was trying to squeeze some juice out of my r9 380 using MSI afterburner but run into a trouble. It runs 980/1425 stock. I OC'ed it to 1080/1425 with +20mV and +50% power limit (I have mod that changes 20% to 50%) and it ran perfectly stable for like 2-3 hours in valley with temperatures never going above 63C. However when I try to hit anything above 1080ghz valley crashes right after like 20-30 minutes. No matter how much voltage I add, it doesnt help. There seems to be no noticeable difference between 30mV and 100mV. Also temps are fine and usually stay in low-mid 60. I already upgraded MoBo and GPU bios to recent versions in case it was due to them being to old, but that didnt help either. I also disabled power efficiency toggle in crimson software. Still no use. So is it the rock bottom for my card? thats all I can squeeze out of it? or is there any other problem I might be not aware of? PS. I also tried clean installation of drivers, but with no luck

So i was getting fed up with my 980ti always getting so extremly hot. it would easily hit 90C in games after not too long and i thought i would change the thermal paste to see if that was the problem. what i saw was the worst ever job in applying the thermal paste. 1/3 of the die was not covered and it was just a mess everywhere else. i change it and am able to play again at now 72C instead of 90. a massive 18C drop which was very suprising. everything is going well and im playing DOOM and i thought i would try and see if i could overclock a bit higher cause of the lower temperatures. i managed to be able to play at 1565mhz core clock for a while but then it crashed. no big deal right? thats what i thought anyways... i can still play games and everything but its like my pc doesnt even know my gpu's are there. GPU-z can see its a 980ti but is missing alot of information, nvidia inspectors sees nothing, msi afterburner says 0 in everything and so on. this is the same case with the 560 that i have in my system (i use it to have more monitors connected) so i would say i can conclude from that fact that its not cause of the change in thermal paste that this is happening but that somehow my overclock managed to completely corrupt something. Specs: 980ti 560 i7 2600k MSI P67A-GD65 CM silent Pro M 850W Things i have tried: reinstalling graphics driver reinstalling gpu-z/afterburner restarting my pc I have been thinking of resetting Cmos but i cant see why that would do anything. i have attached pictures to show what i mean with my pc not being able to fully recognize my gpu's

I started overclocking my 280x just to test the water. I'm testing it with unigine valley. From the default 1000mhz core I would go up in 25mhz increments. At 1075mhz it ran fine for the 5-10 minutes tested. At 1100mhz unigine crashed fast so I thought it was time to overvolt, I unlocked the voltage but as soon as I unlocked it, everything was unstable causing unigine to crash and black squares everywhere. This lead me to believe that for some reason when you unlock the voltage it's not set to the default that it's at when it isn't unlocked since it gave me problems at 1075mhz which was stable when voltage was locked. How do I figure out where it should be?Another general overclocking question is, if crashing is a sign you should either back down the clock or overvolt, what are the signs that you gave too much voltage? That's the confusing part to me for both gpu and cpu overclocking.

Hello everyone, I picked up a XFX Radeon HD 6870 for a good price and I wanted to overclock to get more performance out of it but MSI afterburner doesn't apply the increased MHz when i click apply. it just jumps back to the stock MHz. Does any of you have an idea why this is? With my 750 ti oc I was able to overclock without any problems. thanks Windows10 Pro cpu: a10 7850k gpu: XFX Radeon hd 6870 2gb storage: samsung 850 evo 250gb, Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1tb motherboard: MSI A78m-e35

I have question about MSI afterurner overclocking. So I found out that AUX voltage overclock tab and I decided to tet it out. I set it to +20mV and changed clock from 1040 to 1150 and memory from 1500 to 1650. My GPU is R9 390 nitro. I tried to run Valley becnhmark, and after 20sec I got black screen and no video signal. So I force shut down my PC and turn it back on. Disabled that OC and everything was back to normal. That happened 2 days ago, but since then I got like 2-3 times horizontal green line on my screen for like 1sec. Could that AUX voltage overclocking dammage something on my card? Or it could be random glitch in system? Because I was playing GW2 for like 5+ hours in last 2 days and never had any problem. But randomly while browsing web, I got horizontal green line for 1 sec. Temperatures never went over 75°C on GPU and never over 80-90°C on VRM. Any ideas?

Hello, I'm attempting a first time overclock, on a 980 Ti, so far it goes pretty good, tried gathering as much knowledge as possible and with an educated guess to fill in the gaps I started overclocking the card in small step until trouble arrived. Which happened in form of the screen going black and not coming back. Further searching revealed this was instability or, a bad overclock? That could be solved by raising the core Voltage. I raised it with 5 mV and did another run and it seemed good then, but that was only one wole run of Unigine Heaven's Benchmark, the settings are now: Before: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10009928/Other/Antec/OC/Unigine%20Heaven%20Benchmark%20980%20Ti%20Reference%20Stock.html After: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10009928/Other/Antec/OC/Unigine%20Heaven%20Benchmark%20980%20Ti%20Reference%20%2B5mV%20%2B250%20%2B300.html The fan curve is a little lower as what was tested with, which was what Afterburner set itself, keeps it cool but is really noisy. Further details, the card is a MSI Reference model, the GTX 980Ti 6GD5, with a ASIC score of 73.8% which i understand is pretty decent. During the benchmark I also noticed the temperatures didn't seem to increase much from the overclock. So, my question is, did I do it right so far, or are there any tips on what I could be doing better? I guess for instance it was a bit earlier to raise the memory speed, but I wanted to make sure the card could outperform a stock Strix OC version, the card that I first had. (Swapped it with this ref because of future, tiny cased, plans.)

Hello,I have been playing Payday 2 on my PC (Specs Below), and I have MSI Afterburner v4.2.0 hardware monitor. While I play the game, the FB Usage averages about 35%. Every now and then when in game, usually when I click to a menu or something, the FB Usage goes to about 95% and the FPS goes down to about 20 from 60. After alt+tabbing, and clicking on MSI Afterburner, the FB Usage goes back down (at least for a small while).Thank you.SPECS:Intel i-5 2320 3 gHzGTX 660 2GB2 TB HDD

Hi guys, I'm currently trying to push my gtx 970 a little further but the core clock that I set on afterburner doesn't seem to apply. At stock, I run at 1291Mhz, I apply an offset of +150Mhz but the core clock is maxed out at 1340ish Mhz. I don't understand why it doesn't apply the core clock because earlier today, I reached 1500Mhz (but wasn't stable ) Can you help me?

I'm currently using Afterburner with Catalyst to disable Powerplay, up the clocks and customise the fan settings. I've heard that Crimson and Afterburner where not playing nice (specially the fan settings). Anyone tested Afterburner with the new Crimson hotfix yet?

Hello Today I started playing GTAV and noticed sluggish performance. It used to run all good. When I checked OC settings I noticed that my VRAM overclock was gone. I tried to put it back but it kept resetting to +0MHz. I tried it both with MSI Afterburner and Asus GPUTweak. How can I find out what the reason is I cannot overclock my VRAM anymore? I used to be able to do it, and I can still overclock my GPU. P.S. My GPU is a gtx970 G1. Drivers are updated using GeForce Experience. For further specs, see profile.

I have a GTX 550 ti and I think the GPU temp sensor is broken. I was recently playing Euro Truck sim 2 and noticed stuttering and lag. When I went to go check in MSI Afterburner if everything is ok I noticed the temperature was hitting a max of 42* C (normally at 75* C max at this game) with 100% load. During idle the temps drop to around 35* C (around 55* C normal). I don't know if it's just a temporary malfunction or if it is a more serious problem....

I have this! And I do have a 120mm fan right in front of it blowing air into the front holes so my question is which of these two is right? or If the first is right then my airflow is perfect but if not well then...

Hey guys, i recently installed MSI afterburner and RivaTuner onto my PC and i've encountered a couple problems. Firstly afterburner doesnt show the voltage drawn by my graphics card, its not too much of a problem but if there's a fix i'd like to sort it. Secondly when using RivaTuner to show in game stats my screen gets the funky banner down the left hand side, it sometimes flashes all sorts of colours and other times stays blank (picture included) its kinda irritating whilst in game however i do want to use RivaTuner so show stats, any thoughts? I've unistalled and reinstalled a few times but the problem still persists. Thanks in advance!

Ok so i just got my new shiny 650W 80+ gold PSU and now im gona OC my graphics card! i am slightly familiar with MSI afterburner seeing as i have used it to OC my old 750TI(with horrible results) and i just have some questions for people who use it!(or just generally OC) here they are: 1: does the OC load automatically after you restart your PC or do you have to do it manually in MSI afterburner? 2: memory or GPU first? 3: do i touch the voltage? 4: best steps to go with?(ie: 10 and 10 untill crach/artifacts and then down 5 and 5 untill stabile) thanks for any replies and thanks for any help, marry christmas everyone
