I actually own a chromebook, Samsung series 3 I believe, had it for a year now, I use it as an additional monitor when doing research at school, or to do essays in my study period. I would say it has paid itself for me, and the build quality is decent enough to survive being in a backpack. My highschool uses a lot of chromebooks and they actually perform better than our desktops, there isn't any program besides video editing that the chromebook can't do for my school's purposes. However, at my old high school we ran iMacs with bootcamp and were much more tech focused with photoshop and flash animation classes, and while the chromebook can't do that, it found quite a niche in my English classes because we don't need much besides a browser, word processor, and powerpoints.
