I've dropped my Lumia 920 on concrete without a case or screen protector and there was minimal damage. For the screen they use Gorilla glass so you can use it to play airhockey on dirt roads. The main difference is that amount of apps (the gap is decreasing daily) on Windows Phone vs. the amount on Android. Also you will find much less customization on Windows Phone compared to Android.

It depends on your phone, I personally don't use a case or a screen protector on my Nokia Lumia 920. On another note I am running out of concrete to drop this phone on...
