  1. Just to be that cool kid I'll say the PSU wins here, you don't realise what gold efficiency modular means until you have a cheap PSU burn out in your system and its hard-wired and cable-tied in.
  2. I think the best thing about that 970 is that carbon, it says I don't care about practicality or efficiency, I'm from the future!
  3. Hey guys here's a tricky one, I've got a potentially problematic PSU on my hands and I'm not entirely sure if any of the lines are actually producing the correct (if any) voltages. I'm limited by a 10 amp consumer multimeter at the moment. So far I have successfully jumped the PSU (green wire to ground) and though I can get obvious sparks from the 12v wires they don't seem to register as the current supplied is to high for the multimeter. The vsb (which as far as I can tell is supposed to supply a current even when the psu is "off" does spark and is within range of multimeter but it has no perceivable voltage. Thanks.   4. maybe if you try hard enough and rub the motherboard down for a while, static buildup?.... but no...
  5. look the problem is bandwidth. if you have a very high performance card in with lower end cpu your going to be slowed down by the cpu to some extent. The 290 is in between gtx 770 and 780 tier so it's closer to the mark that i would expect. Most people wouldn't use more than a gtx 770 or r9 280x with that cpu. I would assume that amd cards would bottleneck more readily given their larger memory bus but thats just a guess
  6. the only thing i would worry about is rad depth hitting your ram, remember though most of the cooling performance comes out of length and width anyhoo edit: easilyyyyyyyyy, you can mount your fans up top then you only need 30mm buffer for the rad between ceiling and ram/board
  7. cant help but think the 780ti is a little excessive, like i get the rational and it's probably best price/performance but you are clipping a bit of performance with the bottleneck
  8. that one is actually pretty nice and it could very well be the smallest but i cannot help but sense a small geographic bias
  9. Definitely don't need more than 1200w, but at this level you need single rail. you probably want a 80+ gold psu as the blips in power tend to amplify with scaling wattage (your choice if not overclocking) you need a reliable brand eg seasonic, silverstone, corsair etc.

So here's the challenge should anyone choose to except it, I have a friend with an ageing sandy bridge era gaming pc but he wants to downsize for uni whilst still utilizing some of the older parts, the 2500k is only marginally slower than even a 4670k so its definatly salvageable as is the full atx motherboard, the psu is well over compensating at 800w (but everyone does) and the 7950 has probably had its time in the sun. The large components that need to fit in go as follows; the full atx motherboard (inc. cpu) a full atx psu a 260-300mm gpu (probably gtx760 or r9 280x) one 3.5 inch drive one 2.5 inch ssd one small wifi card An incredibly difficult rebuild doesn't phase us, as were all rather well seasoned custom builders and neither does adequate airflow to the CPU or space for more than a water-block, as if the hyper 212 can't hold its own under temps a custom wc loop will go in without hesitation (possibly external in parts (ghetto)). hopefully that was comprehensible... um.... cheers guys in advance
