  1. Just a friendly competition, wanted to see whether I could 'optimise' my pi-hole to work better for me, and rather than a dry thread about what to do, I thought I would make it a competition. No posting up 80% when we all know you can't access the web! Real usable percentages people!! This is my best so far, totally usable (except for idiots like NZXT who block VPNs) - though I just noticed they don't block my network wide VPN.... Anyone got any better?
  2. FreeNAS doesn't support nvidia transcoding at all. The intel quick sync is doable, I have spent the last 3 hours researching it...and I am close...one bit off at the moment, hoping to fix it tomorrow when I put a head on the server and can get into bios and make sure the igpu is actually turned on.
  3. Unfortunately, someone is actually watching something at the moment and as much fun as it is cutting it off when there is just 15 minutes left on the movie they are watching, I could do without the whining right now...will let you know if that works.

  5. I run it in a jail, if that is another term for a docker - might be specific to FreeNAS. I have done a number of searches, and I cannot find any information that would indicate that FreeNAS is capable of utilising the GPU for any purpose, from what I can tell there is no GPU passthrough on FreeNAS although it might be something that will come with TrueNAS Scale...whatever that may be.
  6. Though I do agree, get two NAS for your use case. One on-site, one at home. Back them every night and you will be golden.

I disagree with with 1-4. 1, It is a backup, therefore up time is only really important during the back up processes - it doesn't sound like he is using the NAS for 'ongoing' projects, pulling data throughout the day to complete work - so uptime seems less important - maybe that is wrong and what he wants is something like what LTT has, where he is pulling data constantly from storage, but I didn't get that impresison. 2, If you do it yourself, you will learn and be able to troubleshoot for yourself - sure you may spend a LONG time getting the basics down...been there, still doing that, but now at least if something goes wrong, I have a working knowledge of what is actually going on and that may assist when things turn off; 3, FreeNAS is pretty simple, if you want plug and play, sure, but then you will need to rely on 2 because you won't know what is going on - I am a big fan of learning for yourself and being a little more reliant. Customer service and especially Tech Support, is notoriously annoying and pretty slow because they are working entirely blind on what is going on with your system. 4, How would it be harder to expand on FreeNAS than Synology or QNAP? You add more drives, make a new pool - that is it on FreeNAS. Doesn't sound like he needs contiguous data storage where he needs a single pool to expand in line with the data. He can create new pools. Might even assist him in terms of not having to deal with huge pools of 100tb, but instead 10 pools of 10tb so he can go to a single pool and find the project data from a particular date range, for example. I am not convinced that for a business that is just expanding that spending money on Synology or QNAP is really necessary. You can build a FreeNAS server pretty cheap if all you want to do is backup data onto it...in fact, the most expensive part will be the HDD themselves, as you will want to get large capacity enterprise drives and they run to a few hundred quid a pop. If all you want is to backup data, and occasionally be able to retrieve it, you don't need a lot of RAM, you don't need a powerful CPU, all you need is HDD. In relation to RAID cards, I think you are going well overboard for this use case. The man has 11tb of storage, of which 5tb is left, which means he has used 6tb of storage. This is clearly not a man storing 8k footage. He doesn't need a RAID card, he doesn't need any of that....yet. That may change, but realistically speaking, with FreeNAS, he will do just fine with RaidZ in software for the storage capacities he will be dealing with. He can buy 3 14th HDD for £1,000 in the UK, and have somewhere in the region of about 28tb of storage, which is nearly 3 times what he has currently. He doesn't need a RAID card, he will easily have 3 SATA ports on a MB. In 5 years, when he has a multi-room studio, with 10 employees, he can come back and talk to us again, and I will wholeheartedly agree with you in relation to what he needs. But for where he is? You are selling him a Lambourghini when all he needs is a bus pass.

I looked at the support page, that was where i got this: "In addition to regular hardware-accelerated streaming based on the NAS having a compatible Intel processor, some QNAP NAS devices also have PCIe slots. These can be used to add a compatible NVIDIA graphics card (GPU)." But I didn't see anything else about it. I am running FreeNAS, annoyingly, I checked a cheat sheet for GPUs, the 960 has H265, but the 970 doesn't...wtaf! It does say that the card can do 13 streams at 1080p (10MBit) to 1080p (8MBit)...whatever the hell that means lol So, can I get the GPU active on FreeNAS?
  9. I will have a look through those. However, the i7-4790k has QuickSync already, so if I turn on Hardware Acceleration (with a FlexPass), then there will be no need to upgrade to anything at all? My only concern with the CPU was that there was a limited number of cores, 4, and that this would limit the concurrent streams available (as would the CPU Benchmark calculation of 2,000 pts per stream - with a CPU with just 8,000 pts total. But if QuickSync can handle a lot more streams, then the CPU is just fine as it is?
  10. Oddly, just came across this snipper from a Plex forum thread: So throttled in this case does not mean throttled as in every other PC use case for this term? That it is being held back for some reason, like thermal throttling for example. So when I saw the throttling it wasn't that my CPU wasn't keeping up, it was that it wasn't really needed. Anyone able to confirm this?
  11. Are you saying that a 4c/4t CPU can handle more concurrent streams than a 12c/24t CPU? Can you point me to anything that would verify this because that is hard to believe and I would like to do more reading.
  12. See in the UK those Xeons are £120 - or about $150. Threadripper 1920x is about £100-£150. Depending on how lucky you are and how many are around at any given moment. So pricing is pretty close. Can pick up an x79 from the UK (rather than from China) for about £100. Which is going to be cheaper than the TR4 motherboard by a fair whack. Definitely something to look into, my only issue with the Xeon CPUs is there are so damn many of the blasted things, and the performance difference between one Xeon and another can be absolutely huge - these things shouldn't all be named Xeon quite frankly, because some of them are worse than a 10 year old i3 and some are up there with TR.
  13. I do see sense in the 3600 - for the price, 6c12t, I am not sure it will actually do much more than the i7 at 4c8t. It seems like it isn't much of an upgrade for the same money - for this particular use case...clearly the 3600 is a better CPU for all around work, but for the single purpose of transcoding plex...is there a significant difference? Admittedly, the MB would likely push the TR higher in terms of overall cost. Though, the TR4 boards do generally tend to have better onboard capabilities than AM4, unless you go high-end AM4, in which case the price difference is not so great. So there is balance there? The TR goes to 12c24t....that is double the capacity of the 3600, for just the extra cost of the MB? From my understanding, at a simplistic level, more cores = more streams. As long as you not buying a 10 core 0.5ghz CPU, and we are not talking about that here.
  14. I will look into this...not sure I have the storage capacity to convert everything (12tb of material right now and not a lot of free space). I think about $500 would be right. I am not sure the 2700 would perform better? less cores, lower CPU benchmark score? 15k vs 20k? Well I just saw above that Plex does it too....so going to look into that. My knowledge in running things in VM/Linux is growing, but it is still extremely limited. I looked at Plex and it seems to indicate you need a QNAP device to utilise Nvidia's NVENC encoding?
  15. I do have a GTX 970 laying around, not sure whether that can be utilised (in fact I have 2, but I think only one can be used). The NAS does run two VMs, and I would like the system to handle more than 4 concurrent streams, 6 to 8 ideally; though that will be quite rare. For information, I am already running an i7-4790k on 14tb Enterprise drives, and I don't seem to have any issue with read speeds across the 2 drives which I think are set up as a mirror currently. What I do see though, is a lot of (Transcoding: throttled) when people are connected and watching. I also note that my CPU is reaching 80% on just 2 concurrent streams.
  16. I can't do that as it is a family server, serving various individuals both at home and away, all using different devices - including 3 different models of TV, on MAC and Windows. Plus, we are talking about a considerable amount of data here, even if it were possible to have it all encoded the same, the amount of time to transform it all into a single format would be far beyond the time I would want to spend doing it. For the same sort of price, I would be looking at a Ryzen 5 3600 which is 6c12t but a healthy 18k score on CPU benchmark, or a Xeon CPU which is roughly the same price for 12c24t, but appear even slower in terms of clock speed than TR and have a far lower score on CPU benchmark (16k vs 20k) for the same price. I mean, it is lower than the 3600.
  17. I have noticed that the price of Threadripper 1900-1920x have plummeted. You can pick them up really cheap. It is a multicore CPU model, and while the speeds aren't great and it was never that good for gaming, I was thinking, for a Plex server would it be sufficient? It has a score between 20,000 and 22,000 on CPU Bench Mark - depending on 1900x or 1920x. I seem to remember a calculation from Plex of (roughly) 2,000 bench mark score per 1080p stream Which would give you 10 streams at 1080p or thereabouts (dependent on your bandwidth I suppose)? However, I do have a couple of concerns, does the lack of speed on the first gen TR platform impact transcoding performance? In benchmarks from the time they came out, I seem to remember them being quite a bit behind, but I am not sure whether that has any impact on transcoding, and since that will be the only heavy task it would face, not sure it would make a difference. Is the first generation early adaptor problems following the 1900s, or is it simply a matter of some teething problems that were ironed out over time, but now with updated bios and windows (BSD/FreeNAS/Linux) it works just fine? Anyone used it before for this purpose have any insight?
  18. I have the LG so I know that works. Have you been able to try different cables? Might be some sort of conflicting behaviour due to USB-c to DP, you should be able to run two DP cables off a 2070 (though USB-C should be able to handle this, it might be struggling with another DP cable.

DDR3 1600mhz RAM for 2x2gb stick...yes you read that right, 4gb of RAM...£118 on Overclockers UK - sure it is CL7 but who really cares at 1600mhz? is CL7 going to make up nearly 2000 MHZ of DDR4 RAM (which can run easily at 3600) G-Skill 2x 8GB DDR3 2400MHz Gaming Memory Kit - ohh its gaming memory, CL10 - £157. Even bizarre off-brand RAM from China is like £70 for 16gb of DDR3 2400mhz RAM. Where is it all going that it can sell for this much? Who is buying DDR3 RAM in such quantities that the price can remain this high? I wanted it for a 6 year old system.

  22. Yeah I have been looking at this.. It appears that RAM in the UK is about $30 more expensive than it is in US, or about £25. I can't think of any justification for it, given that transport to the European Market is about equal to transport to the US (in terms of distance and number of purchasers). It just appears to be a price gouge across brands.
  23. It works over the network, I don't know whether it is a 'host' machine. It just works across your machines that have flow installed. I didn't see anything to indicate that one machine was the host. I don't know if there is a limit to the number of machines either.
