  1. Download and run CPU-Z and call it a day. It should be on the Motherboard tab of CPU-Z.
  2. Can you post the service tag to the Optiplex 990? It's usually found on a sticker on the case. The reason I ask is becuase there's usually three versions of an Optiplex i.e. full tower, SFF, uSFF.
  3. A Ryzen processor, more RAM, an SSD and a new video card. But that depends on the use case of this PC i.e. is it for gaming or a little of both gaming and non-gaming use. Also, any particular reason why he wants to upgrade? If it's just for the sake of upgrading might as well save the money. He's already Ryzen ready. Why a new CPU and mobo? Is the mobo just that bad?
  4. As others have mentioned, your setup is still good for gaming but it depends on the games you play and at what resolution. A GPU upgrade should boost performance. Also used DDR3 is quite cheap nowadays might be a good idea to grab yourself 16GB of RAM or more. Cheap used i7 could also be an option.
  5. I'm leaning towards that but I current available PSU in my locale under $80 are well limited: a) Corsair VS650 650W b) Corsair CX650M 650W c) SilverStone ET-650B 650W And since I don't overclock or any of that, that's all I'm willing to spend on the PSU.
  6. What's the mobo? If it's some high end stuff like an Asus Rampage III Extreme; SABERTOOTH X58, the Ultra Durable series from Gigabyte boards or any other high-end brand then it could be a good investment especially with a 6-core Xeon upgrade. Who knows.
  7. Thanks for the suggestion. I actually went with this: http://sapphirenitro.sapphiretech.com/en/580-8.html Got it used for $200 (US). Got it from a friend who was using it for mining for less than 6 months. He's bugging out of mining while he can still sell his 580s. But now I'm having a crisis with the PSU I have.
  8. I finally got this Sapphire RX-580 (http://sapphirenitro.sapphiretech.com/en/580-8.html) at a very sweet deal and I was wondering if I can just plug this in my current rig WITHOUT upgrading the PSU as well. Specs as follows: CPU: Intel i7-3770 Motherboard: MSI MS-7798 RAM: 16GB DDR3 (2x8GB) GPU: ASUS 660 Ti (192-bit & 2GB DDR5) Case: Antec 300 Storage: 1 each of a Seagate and Western Digital 1TB drives + 1 500GB Seagate HDD PSU: Seasonic S12II-620 ODD: ASUS DVD-RW Cooling: Deep Cool Ice Edge Mini FS + 3 x 120 mm Fans + 1 x 140 mm fan The reason I ask is because the Seasonic PSU will be 2 years old by March of this year. In addition, folks here in LTT don't look too kindly on this PSU because it's of an an old design. Even if Jonny Guru rated the 520W version of this with a 9.7 score folks still knock it for it's old desgin: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=185 So should I upgrade the PSU becuase of the "new" video card? Or will I be okay sticking with it? I do have a spare PSU but it's basically 8 years old now. It's a SilverStone SST-ST60F-P. By the way neither of the PSUs has ever seen any overclocking just powering cards like the Radeon 7950 and the 660 Ti. I'm open to suggestions for a new PSU but I can' go over $80 though. Also I don't mind a non-modular one if that helps. Thanks in advance for any inputs on this problem of mine. EDIT: Current available PSU in my locale under $80: a) Corsair VS650 650W b) Corsair CX650M 650W c) SilverStone ET-650B 650W
  9. OFF TOPIC: See! There's that "myth" again about AMD being real hot temp-wise. I commented on a thread about non-techies here in the forum about this "myth" with AMD: ON TOPIC: Barring overvolting a processor to death or extreme overclocking, both AMD and Intel Processor "live" for a long time. In some instances the motherboard have died but the processors themselves are still working.
  10. I see no mention of gaming here so, a video card upgrade might not be the answer to your problems. A RAM upgrade to 16GB and above is your best bet. Maybe an SSD upgrade down the road could somewhat help with your use case as well.
  11. Moot point. The hardware you have may or may not work with Windows 7. Have you tried buying the cheap Windows 10 keys from eBay? Some have commented here that they're legit but YMMV.
  12. I've run into this problem a couple of times and the easiest solution to basically use a spare drive to install an O.S. on it and then your the drive with the important data as a secondary drive so you get a chance to grab the data from it.
  13. Looks like a standard ATX case. Can't use a new-ish video card on the top slot though if that hard drive bay is not removable.
  14. www.jonnyguru.com does very detailed reviews. You could learn a thing or two in there on how to spot good and bad PSUs. EDIT: @ibabyslapper That was the first thing on my mind after reading OP's post. LOL
  15. If you have an existing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 key you can save money by not buying that Windows 10 Pro. AS of 1809 Windows 10 will still accept a windows 7 or Windows 8.1 key. That is if you want to save some $$$.
  16. e-Bay perhaps. It's a unique feature of those Antec cases so it might be hard to find.
  17. What games exactly are you trying to play?
  18. That's not a Compaq tower. That's a custom built-PC using an old school ANTEC SX-635 case. I don't see the motherboard model but from the location of the 2 SATA ports and the controller for it plus the orientation of the Northbridge heatsink this is probably an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe: https://www.google.com/search?biw=1280&bih=646&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=R_A4XObMMMz6-QaPjLioAQ&q=ASUS+A7N8X+Deluxe&oq=ASUS+A7N8X+Deluxe&gs_l=img.3..0j0i24.34335.34335..34877...0.0..0.96.96.1......0....2j1..gws-wiz-img.F75DzHwEXqQ That motherboard used AGP for video and has no built-in video. So either use another AGP card or an older PCI (Not PCIE) video card in order to determine if there's still video output. You can also try removing the AGP video card, cleaning the contacts with an eraser and at the same time blow some canned air on the AGP slot. Just to make sure it's not the dust that's causing poor contact between the card and the AGP slot. LTT's Ultimate Sleeper Build used the same case, IIRC: https://www.google.com/search?q=ltt+ultimate+sleeper+build&source=lnms&tbm=vid&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwis-O_dvubfAhVT7WEKHUhfAscQ_AUIDigB&biw=1280&bih=646
  19. I do tech support for a big company in the I.T. field and I can confirm that mom and pop or non-techy users can fill up a 1TB hard drive real quick either because they keep lots of files or don't bother to delete files they downloaded but don't need like installers and the like.
  20. According to Dell, they're different kinds of RAM: https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/sln153768/what-is-ddr3l-memory-?lang=en
  21. Hardware Canucks did a video on pairing a 1080 ti with an i7-2600k and later with an i7-8700k. They tested several games with with. You might want to watch that video, since it could give you an idea on performance improvements with going with an i7. https://www.google.com/search?biw=1280&bih=613&tbm=vid&ei=7jk1XI2RM9n_wAPrmq2wAQ&q=hardware+canucks+1080+ti+i72600k&oq=hardware+canucks+1080+ti+i72600k&gs_l=psy-ab.3...1589.3669.0.3883.9.9.0.0.0.0.112.958.0j9.9.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..0.0.0....0.rZS4YjUopBc
  22. If you're doing nothing heavy why not a 200GE for the processor? Or the 2200G more more horsepower? Also since it's an Office PC, why an OC-capable board? You usually don't OC Office PCs IMHO. Shouldn't an A320-based board suffice for an Office build? One other thing, have you explored going with an Intel Pentium G-series build? It could be a lot cheaper.
  23. Why do you need to open up the PSU? Just check the label on the side of the PSU and we can tell you if what you have is good or not. Samples:
  24. Hardware Canucks did a review on an i7-2600k paired with a 1080ti and then later with an i7-8700k. Maybe you you can get an idea on the performance increase for you planned CPU ugrade. Who knows the video might convince you otherwise from upgrading the CPU. https://www.google.com/search?q=i7-2600k+1080ti&source=lnms&tbm=vid&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi0kN2lqN_fAhWOxIMKHe0ZBIMQ_AUIDygC&biw=1280&bih=646 What games do you actually play?
