Intentions for updating server Increase space Decrease power usage Preserve enough horsepower to transcode media on the fly via AirVideo HD Hardware Apple Macbook Air Mid 2013 CPU:1.3GHz Intel i5 RAM: 4GB DDR3L 1600 2x 8 Bay USB 3 Enclosure HDD 1:4x WD Red 6TB HDD HDD 2: 4x Seagate Desktop HDD 4TB HDD 3: 2x 120GB Intel SSD (Landing disk) Software and Configuration: Window Server 2012 R2 StableBit DrivePool + Scanner 40.24TB raw storage. (soon to be expanded by 2x6TB drives around end of year) Usage: This array stores all my Movies and TV Shows for myself and family. Backup: Im still yet to find a solution to backup 40TB of data.... if anyone knows of a way that doesnt cost a left kidney.... Im interested. I have old HDDs no longer in use, now archived with data from my array. Additional info: The whole setup is proteced by an APC 1000VA UPS with 1 extended battery module. (soon to be retired for an Eaton UPS) The laptop is my previous machine I used for work, now that its retired, it allows me to store data with very little power usage. Photo's: To be attached soon....
  2. Once the new EduSTAR image is released schools can download it within a few hours to 1 day depending on the size of your schools VicSmart connection. Then it gets a bit less predictable, your schools method of testing and imaging devices can vary greatly If they run MDT then there will be some hands on steps to deploy it out If they run SCCM they may be able to deploy it out rather quickly. Either way the best thing you can do is be patient Schools are always reluctant to jump onto the bleeding edge... unless they have the technical expertise to throw at problems that come up. Definitely ask them about it.. no harm in asking But you may need to accept their response even if its not in your favour. Make them aware your willing to test it out, i know if i had a few students in my bigger schools willing id let them trial it.... trials can only benefit everyone if your willing to put up with the bugs My schools will be moving to it either in Term 3 holidays or end of year. Rollouts during term usually cause more grief than benefit.
  3. Hi Gibbsy81 Just so you know Victorian DET (formally DEECD) will be selecting schools in September for beta testing eduSTARv6 (Win 10 build of the SOE image) Final release is penciled in for late October. If your lucky and your school is proactive rather than reactive your school might be expressing interest in being part of the beta test of v6 Remember though even if the image is available the schools infrastructure may not be, so you can ask but understand 1 person asking for an upgrade probably wont help Perhaps offer to be a tester for them... this might be enough for them to consider your request. Best of luck!
  4. The Black series is typically more expensive due to its longer manufacturer warranty. Spec for spec the drives will perform at a similar level. Black series drives used to also support WD TLER for better compatibility in hardware RAID arrays however this feature has been removed and is only available on the Red and Red Pro series of consumer drives.
  5. Unsure if any of the Linus Media Group employees will read this however I felt it necessary to explain my concerns about Vessel Im aware there is room for plenty of improvement for a newly surfacing streaming company so the issues I have are at time of this post only. Streaming in anything above Low quality seems to cause the stream to stutter whilst it catches up, very frequently... making it unwatchable Im unsure if this is due to Australia's horrible internet interconnects to other countries or if its just something Vessel are yet to polish up for us Aussies.... The only thing I'm fairly confident it is not is a local issue Home internet is 200mbit (2 NBN connections teamed if anyone thinks its not possible) Work internet is 20 - 50mbit depending on the site... All the high bandwidth connections i have available on independent ISP's all result in a simmilar issue, either Low quality to stabilise the stream or a jerky higher quality. Im afraid for the short/medium term i will have to resort to continuing to watch the videos on Youtube albeit later than id like due to the 1 week delay for content to reach that platform. But unfortunately my hands are tied due to the Linus Media Group focus on Vessel being the launch platform. Please note though... Im not arguing that this is unfair or a wrong move from LMG, You have a business to run and are expanding to new areas to try to increase the revenue stream, this I applaud you for as no company like yours survives without revenue streams. I hope you can provide feedback to the Vessel team regarding the inconsistent stream speed that we Aussies seem to receive. I've also noticed there is no way to buffer the whole video.... if this was possible to wait for it to buffer i would probably be satisfied for the short/medium term on the Vessel platform, this doesn't seem possible either Shame but good luck with this new platform and direction that LMG is heading... Try not to forget about us guys in the process

  7. Its great to see that Linus and the team have built not only a channel on YouTube but have set the standard for professional content delivery. I think its nothing short of a credit to all of the Linus Media Group to have reached this milestone all whilst keeping the feel of the content still fresh and unique. I hope you find ways to evolve and adapt to the ever changing internet scene whilst keeping that down to earth technical help that you all provide so well. Congratulations to you all at Linus Media Group! P.S I think it would be good to post a several minute video from each of your employees Linus, showcasing what they do behind the scenes and what got them to where they are today. They might not end up the most popular videos, but some of your community I'm sure would love to get the opportunity to see these videos
  8. Very true ManWithBeard I guess my point was, if at all possible.... try not to place all the eggs in one basket. HDDs are not too expensive, especially when you consider what he wants to backup My recommendation would be in time, invest in a 2nd HDD and keep it off site.
  9. If your wanting to backup all the family photos then you really should follow the 3-2-1 backup rule. 3 copies of your data 2 different storage types (HDD, USB, CD, Tape...etc) 1 taken offsite (Work, Cloud, Friends/Family) If your relying on an external HDD to be reliable you may one day be sadly dissapointed. Expecially if its something you cannot replace like family photos
  10. I think a better way to put it is. If available an mSATA would be a cost effective solution however if your motherboard of choice comes with M.2 then... go down the M.2 path No need to reinvent the wheel
  11. Unsure if you were aware but the M.2 interface is vastly different than the mSata standard. It offers USB, Sata and PCI-e lanes on the one connector for next generation cards. Im unsure on pricing on M.2 SSD's however unless im missing something you cannot just purchase a mSata ssd and plug it in. Adapters may come down the track. Ive linked the wikipedia article for M.2 standards FYI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2
  12. Your comparison is a bit lacking... if your comparing this thread topic to the Apple/Samsung patent war... wouldn't it then require Valve to sue "Australia"? I really don't get how people either find this difficult to understand or grasp
  13. Guys i think your missing the point of the refund. Its not there because you change your mind or because you didn't like the game It is there for Major Defect reasons. Down here in Australia we are protected under the law from large corporations via our ACCC If a product is found to have a major flaw or defect that is unrepairable in a fair and reasonable period of time we are entitled to a refund. Valve as a company are trading in the confines of Australia and thus are required to respect the trade agreements and laws they trade under. Also note guys, no matter what contract or fine print is written into a deal or purchase we are entitled to this right as Australian consumers So no matter what Valve say or try to do, they are required to adhere to these laws. Valve can easily work out a system to offer refunds. Every other trader inside Australia has worked it out, because they are legally obligated to. This is the article people should be using for factual information as this is the grounds ACCC are taking on Valve. http://www.accc.gov.au/business/treating-customers-fairly/warranties/warranties-against-defects
