  1. My first one is running on new old stock drives that were pulled from servers and consumer hardware for over 6 years now and still running strong. Seems to be a very stable os.
  2. Did you make the server as your dmz from your router? It is going to be more how much of the internet you open the machine to and how you protect your network. When running a server, only the needed ports should be open. Also going through a reverse proxy helps with security. If you are going to run a server, you will also want to put in protections as to what ip addresses that are allowed to access it to prevent issues and ensure that services that are hosting are kept up to date as possible. Maybe consider switching to a router that can also do dnsbl, intrusion detection, and geo blocking.
  3. If this is personal use you can use a VPN to connect back to it if you just need the data. I have a vm on mine running guacamole that I have open to the internet protected with cloud flare so I can remote into any machine at home from any other machine anywhere that has internet and a web browser. That works pretty well for what I need but not as nice as a full VPN. My current project is setting up opnsense so my VPN can be connected over https ports so it is harder to be blocked as a few locations I visit block standard VPN connections.
  4. The other good thing with zfs is you don't have to worry about losing the data when the controller fails like you would with any hardware solution.
  5. This would be hard for them to test as it really depends on the specific hardware configuration and the software together. On my mini pc from awow Linux mint runs great on it. But if I try to run proxmox on it the network is very unstable but both run on one of my laptops without issues.
  6. That is correct. When you are transferring data between computers on your local network you don't use your isp data and therefor won't count towards your cap. This is one reason for the shows and movies I watch a lot and already own I digitized and put in a local plex server so I don't have to stream it over the internet again and again.
  7. Hello all, I am tinkering around with pfsense and opnsense trying to learn them and use them in my home lab. With pfsense I was able to add a domain override and use asus.router to find machines on the main router. I tried this in opnsense and it didn't seem to work. Does anyone have some guidance on how that should be setup?
  8. That is the same way here in the United States. If there is anything on the device they can blame as user damage they won't honor warranty services. I had this happen with two manufacturers myself.
  9. The only thing I have ever used it for was windows mobile devices. It had other use cases? And yeah, it was utter trash syncing to my t-mobile wing back in the day.
  10. I was wondering if the labs is into hardware research. One thing I think they could do with some electrical engineering background is to look into the SD card failure issue with the asus rog ally. While it might be caused by heat, it isn't the cards that are dying but something in the device. Maybe the controller not working correctly or something. I have now seen a few people that had their cards die but work fine in another machine or card reader and different cards work in the ally. I think it would be cool if they could do a failure analysis piece on it.
  11. That was a portal from windows 7 for quick settings for laptops and sync with windows mobile devices. I doubt many people have a genuine need for that anymore. Microsoft keeps a lot of things around for backwards compatibility.
  12. The rog ally has been out how long now and is still killing SD cards with no fix other than rma it again and better luck next time?
  13. And I think this is the problem with society currently. For a number of people, just disagreeing or holding an alternative view is considered toxic.
  14. I would check in with someone that has legal expertise as the real biggest problem would be liability. If someone gets hurt somehow, it might fall on you. That would be a discussion to have with the venue at the very least.
  15. That labs comment was definitely a shot over the bow of those two creators and inaccurate. I think the main objection was that it was seen as trying to say that they were better than gn or hub.
  16. Terran did say they would release findings. I think the community will hold him to that statement.
  17. I use software raid, storage controllers, and headless setups at home. For a number of years now actually and on consumer hardware. That was before I made a home lab by a few years as well. I wouldn't say that is is entirely irrelevant to a decent portion of the viewership.
  18. This might be true but under any circumstance, if she was being grabbed like she claims, that is never okay.
  19. I never said it would be 100% truth. But there is good science on how to do comparative benchmarking. There are a number of factors that can be controlled for and documented that the results can be replicated. For instance testing graphics cards you use the fans bench, clean install of windows, same settings, locked cpu frequencies etc.
  20. I think they aren't going to rush. And they will either start normal releases again or they will put another here's the plan and changes we have made video. Sorry of like a state of the channel address. Not sure if they will do that or wait till wan show. Either way, this next wan show is probably going to be popcorn worthy I think. You know they are going to have to address the current state of things. I would be curious if the CEO will make good on his word to publish the findings of the sexual assault investigation. That is going to be a deciding factor for me if I continue to support him or start privateering his videos instead.
  21. I know if I try that at my company that wouldn't go well either. Developers live working from home and productivity has increased with them since we started work from home. They all say there are less distractions from their work this way.
  22. If they go entertainment only I think that would be detrimental as well. What's the point of doing reviews with graphs if it isn't anything but entertainment. Plus that would put the labs investment to waste. I seriously doubt that they will do that.
  23. I don't recall her alleging any physical attack. Bad enough though if true.
  24. This is why a lot of companies don't want any sex jokes at all, even if no one minds. If she can make sex jokes and no one cares but then another makes a sex joke and she says she objects to it, that can create a problem in and of itself. Why would you allow one person to do it but not others?
