  1. Once you've ripped the DVDs, if you want to store them for the long run, do NAS4Free or Freenas with software RAID (ZFS). Then for streaming, you can setup Plex.
  2. Oh and if you get gigabit ethernet make sure you don't get bottlenecked by your router. I of course am going to vote for build your own so you can save files and retrieve them quickly and easily.
  3. I'm curious, how easy was that to set up on FreeNAS? I gave it a try but it really didn't like the USB I was using I think. I did a jailed Plex on my NAS4free and it was easy enough. N4F has a file explorer through the webgui but it's pretty basic.
  4. That would be really cool, I'm also interested to know how it would be feasible - government subsidy?
  5. Yeah I don't have many, if any, games on my SSD anymore. I have them all on a separate HDD, since I'm a filthy casual now I don't really mind
  6. I'll also recommend Pycharm, it has never let me down. Also, automate the boring stuff.
  7. Having a NAS with RAID is a great way to backup files if you don't want to put them on cloud storage. Personally, I use software raid to forego the cost of a hardware RAID controller. There are many ways you can backup to a NAS - Rsync, iSCSI target, CIFS/SMB share, syncthing and owncloud plugins. I've made a few posts on these things so check it out!
  8. Do you know of any projects in particular? Some of them are kind of hard to just jump into.
  9. I've been trying to stay active with Python for the past two years, I'm at a stage where I'm comfortable solving a problem or transforming data from one form into another. However, I don't have a larger project to work on or contribute to that will teach me how to build out a larger program instead of just quick scripts. Anyone know of any courses or goals that can specifically help with this?
  10. I like this build. Good parts all around and great prices
  11. FreeBSD is a fine choice; NAS4Free is even better my homeserver does fine with an old i5. However, I wouldn't recommend opening your server up to the www, too many security concerns.
  12. If it's the interference, make sure you have dual-band and that it is enabled. Maybe you could upgrade to tri-band? There are plenty of consumer grade routers that "get the job done" for what your situation sounds like for $100-200
  13. Interesting giveaway. You have some money leftover? Isn't that what you call your savings? Or is it Amazon credit, because you can get pretty much anything off Amazon, shipped to you in two days. Toothpaste, floss, toilet paper. . . Even food. I'd say buy the Fury for the youngest person with the lousiest rig (that can house the GPU, as you said) only if they post a picture of their great big smile afterwards Because making someones day, heck, making their year in a way we can all appreciate justifies this massive giveaway more than "hey i got some leftover money".
