Once again, for the 2nd time I find myself dealing with the displeasure that is NEMIX's support system. All I hope for is that this time around it doesn't take almost 30 days to resolve my problem.

In the meantime this new RAM is impressive:

IMAG0593-mod.thumb.jpg.1327aaa9315f2a98b1d45f774b5c61f2.jpg

It uses a standard number of chips (18 because of 72-bit/error correcting). The thing that I'm most impressed by here is that each one of those packages (ignoring the big one in the middle) are 4GB each.

Now that doesn't sound like a lot but in contrast here is a 8GB stick of RAM:

IMAG0594-mod.thumb.jpg.46f99894f0904986b1a50e00f681cdf9.jpg

Each of those chips are only 512MB that means the NEMIX packages are a 800% increase in density over today's most standard modules. That's insane.

So anyways all I can do is hope NEMIX gets back to me because it seems like every other month the RAM manufacturers change their manufacturing process so when I order more my Supermicro board is like "Yo half your RAM isn't like your other half of RAM I'm not gonna juggle this s***: SYSTEM INITIALIZING" and just never POSTs.

Now, as dumb as this sounds I'm going to attempt to speed-run NEMIX support. They already told me to ship the old RAM but I'm going to verify that with them because I think it'll save me time if I misunderstood which set of four they want. They want an invoice which I guarantee I don't have because the old set of four modules where the replacement ones they sent me. So that may cause problems. I have to wait for a reply Monday to see what they say.

Once this is resolved I think I'll stop. 0.5TB of RAM should be more than enough for any amount of processing I'll have the server doing.

Any reason you are buying NEMIX and not say Samsung? Are they that much cheaper or something?

They were simply the first name that popped up when I was searching for very high density server memory modules. Also apparently they're suppose to have the greatest compatibility with SM motherboards. It's just too bad different versions don't work with each other.

This time it's not even a Rank issue. All the modules are R2x4 (Top - Old, Bottom - New) and the stickers are full-blown identical. Motherboard still ain't hav'in it though.

Of course you would be the one to point that out. :D

I tried installing each set of four to a matching socket so that each CPU used the same RAM type but nope. I'm guessing the reason would have something to do with NUMA and the QPI link. The CPUs would still have to share memory information so I'm guessing in there lies the issue. In theory I do believe there are BIOS settings that can isolate the CPUs ability to share Memory information between sockets. If this is true perhaps enabling this would allow all the RAM to work but then I could probably see performance loss under certain conditions.

*When server guys started talking about specs. & things that people like me only dream of understanding... while I hold a half read See Spot Run book.*

@dual290x leadeater has a significantly greater understanding of these things than I do. I'd still call myself a server novice. You could have a go at playing with some server oriented OS's. Try to setup some server specific features. That'll get you learning things quick.

I'm going to be writing a guide on GPU pass-though relatively soon. Once that's done you could use it to learn a lot. In the meantime I have a tutorial on setting up a file server using nothing but CLI. You could setup a UnRAID VM and have a go following that. You'll learn a lot in the process.

NEMIX got back to me after shipping them the parts for replacement. They're on backorder and they estimate they'll be back in stock Monday...how the h*** are you out of stock of your most recent DIMMs when you know you're constantly taking in and giving out? You don't have 4 laying around? That's child's play compared to what big businesses order.

So..... guess I'm not buying NEMIX then, the pissing about just doesn't seem worth it for the money saved.

I don't know if I'm saving any money. I just haven't checked out other vendors because the only other names that popped up on Newegg were Dell, Samsung, and Intelligent Memory with ludicrous price tags that made no sense and I just didn't checkout other retailers.

Interesting to note though some of NEMIX's memory is actually manufactured by Hynix (or SKhynix). Like wow not only have you outsourced your manufacturing and just slapped your own sticker on it but you've slimmed your customer support down to the point where every interaction with them is just a chore.

You genuinely have to give them 48 to 72 hours before you can expect a reply and most of the time if you have a question they'll only answer the first one. Based on how most of the responses from them are very cut & paste off a list getting a real human response is often some form of broken English so they probably outsourced that department to Africa like so many other companies have done.

Periodically I will get a phone call from some guy from NEMIX who does have a genuine American accept and has been helpful but the communication between people in his department is still terrible. Don't trust that they'll do any one thing for you until it happens because nobody tells anybody else. I had one guy tell me "Yeah we can do that for you." then the next guy "No, we can't.". Well which is it?

    ...just a terrible experience...0/10 don't recommend.

It seems a miracle happened, the sticks came in Friday and are they're 2 day air-mailing them to me.

All well & good right?...they included this message:

    Quote

Thank you so much for your patience.
We look forward to your 5 egg feedback about our support!

(Newegg does things in eggs instead of stars) The last time I needed their help it took them ~28 days to resolve my issue due to laughably bad communication within their support company. Like hell they're getting 5 eggs. 5 spoiled/rotten eggs maybe but last I checked Newegg doesn't offer those.

But, I'm all for 2nd chances/redemption. If what shows up is what I'm expecting and assuming they all work then maybe I'll be a little lenient in my review.

They're in. Only took 20 days this time and...

    :P (It's 2400 running at 2133 because the CPU's don't support 2400MHz)

Going to let it burn in overnight before drawing any conclusions but this deserves a Status Update of it's own.
