  1. Ok so from my personal experience laptops that tip the 2.5 kg ( 5,5 pounds) are pretty hard to carry around on a daily basis. From the activities you mentioned the most demanding one would have to be gaming. Developing isn't that much of a big deal and is not as demanding as many people tend to think. So for these reasons I think the asus one is complete overkill, especially given that you will also have to carry the charger with you all the time which adds to a total of almost 3.4 kg. On the other hand the xps is not as powerful as you want it to be. Since you mentioned linux, I have to recommend the thinkpad line for a good linux experience. They are not ultraportables really( those which are sacrifice endurance and build quality) but due to their business nature they are very durable( they have military specifications for resistance to shock, vibrations dust etc). From all the models I would recommend the t460p. It is less than 2kg + charger. Battery life is very decent, and there is an external swappable battery dock that you can swap batteries without turning the device off. According to tests it can reach up to 10h of battery life with the external battery on. There is a model with an quad core i7 gtx 940m for about the same cost as some xps 13 configurations. Keyboard is great, thinkpads are renowned for their keyboard, and the clit mouse is actually an excellent pointing device if you get used to it. Screen is pretty good for anything but editing so it will do the trick for coding.( notebookcheck has a good review of it) The drawback of this machine is that in order to achieve 45 watts tdp on the cpu +30-40 watts on the dgpu on less than 2kg is that they have limited the tdp of the cpu to 35 watts, which isn't really noticeable, and the dgpu will thermal throttle by about 10%. That's the price you have to pay for not making the machine too bulky. The 940m is a bit old by today's standards but it is still waaay faster than the hd 520 on the dell xps and if you can be patient enough till CES 2017 they will most likely announce the next generation with kaby lake+pascal. If you want to get a machine that is not throttling at all so you get all the performance that you pay for I suggest the p50 workstation( thinkpad too).
  2. No, not even overwatch. According to intel it can run on 720p med at 30 fps with kaby lake igpu and the hd520 is the lowest skylake one. So you are probably not going to be able to run it at all. Can't speak about the rest
  3. Guys this is JUST about servers. The reason they want this is because windows on desktop is slowly dieing and they want azure to work on everything. It's more of a lets reorganize to the cloud strategy. But they are NOT just giving away desktop marketshare
  4. The actual difference in terms of speed is pretty much negligible unless you are insanely good in competitive games that are focused on reflexes( like CS GO professional level). If you are I would recommend the speed switch, but if not the brown is the most satisfying one and the one I use myself.

  6. I like plain green pcbs with no ram heatspreaders, no leds and just plain chips on them. Nothing fancy, nothing to "improve" looks. Also I love the old school cases with that white/yellow colour, especially those that were sitting horizontally.

  9. Every Apple event since the introduction of the macbook pro in my eyes has been a lost opportunity to make something great. iphone ? Sure great cpu, great OS. But the battery life is still very poor and with the removal of the 3.5mm jack it is the first apple product in the history of the company that I truly do not like and would not want to own. Maybe it's a priority thing, they no longer care about heavy users so they don't invest on making laptops with good cooling for example. Macbook PRO ? What's the pro part ? It's cooling is too weak to compile anything big, and they intentionally do not thermal throttle it so every time you push it it wears the hardware out. I guess the only uses I can see for it would be for music( it is the industry standard atm) and some video/photo editing for hobbyists and lazy youtubers. I have talked to people from the movie industry and according to them only Premier is good enough for real professional use, but Premier is less optimized than FCPX due to the multiple workflows and code paths it supports, so a machine that overheats is not an option for it. I guess the IDE is good there so you can develop on the mac and SSH it to a server for compiling, but you do not need the kind of hardware that is on a macbook pro for what is essentially a text editor. Want to talk about the new macbook ? What's to say about it ? One port ? Tablet-level hardware for 1k+ ? Everything soldered ? Just a glorified netbook. You don't pay for a good computer, you are paying for disposable technology. Their mac ecosystem is getting worse and worse as time passes by. Ffs, a wireless mouse that charges from underneath... What about the imacs ? Great screens, and that is one of the last few points I can give to apple, I wish other companies did the same screens and did not overkill resolutions on stupid 13 inch laptops with 4k screens. But intentionally putting mobile gpus on them so users can't upgrade them is retarded. It seems like all of their heavy duty professional devices are more and more targeted towards prosumers who just get a boner thinking they have a "professional" device. I tend to do a lot of research on what computers to buy and when looking at the mac ecosystem I found out so many shit hidden underneath the nice aluminum enclosure that it becomes disgusting. Their casual consumer devices is something me and most of the ltt community is uninterested in. And it seems like more often than not I dislike people who are heavy apple users, not because they use apple devices but because they seem to share some common characteristics that I don't like. Half of them are people with parents rich enough that just don't care about life anymore or disgusting hipsters trying to be "alternatives" by buying stuff that other people just can't afford. That imo is the worst way to be different. And one of the last excuses apple had about having a problem-free ecosystem is slowly going away with more and more bugs on iOS and macOS with every update. I laugh at every WWDC conference when they talk about how stable their new version is and then wifi doesn't work, the computer changes it's desktop cover to a dick pick, whatever. I think it was El Capitan or Yosemite that even broke some plug ins for their professional music production, the last thing they are doing well. I'm not the most DYI heavy guy, in fact I am not a big fan of the pc ecosystem as it is mostly an ecosystem maintained by a couple corporations, so the actual creativity is limited in looks and flashy LED stuff that I find useless. If im doing a DYI project I'd rather do it on linux and some single-board computer like the RPi for example. But for any critical work I find the apple ecosystem more and more a ghost of it's past. Updating a 3 year old mac is the worst idea ever as you are prone to crashes and all that good stuff. And with how closed the code is, you can't fix any of it yourself, so you are waiting for an apple fix that never comes and then you end up buying a new mac. Because you are so locked in the ecosystem with gb upon gb of iphoto picks that you can't just move away. If you read all of this you deserve a medal.
  10. This is so stupid. Where is good fast ram that is just the freaking pcb and good electronics inside ? I do not care at all about looks or overclocking ram, where is some good ram without a heatspreader or any fluff ?
  11. You can't leave a blank spot the C++ semantics don't allow that afaik. If the constructor takes 6, you have to provide 6. I can't remember, it has been a while but I think this applies to all function, right ?
  12. I think the main issue is that you are not passing the correct number of arguments to the constructor and some of the errors you get are confused because of that. Try fixing that and see what errors you will get.

  14. The damage is not to the gpu itself but to the pcb due to heat, but the end result is the same as you can't replace the pcb alone. Also a lot of people have seen vram issues, again due to heat( myself included). The problem with pcbs on gpus is that the main heat source is very close to the pcb itself, while mobos are much more widespread. There are a lot of ways to design something that breaks after a said period of time. The term value engineering didn't come out of nowhere. Also keep in mind the use case scenario OP suggested is pretty heavy( assuming the pc will not be idling all those hours every day). Anyway, to answer your question no I don't have any proof and I wouldn't expect for any to exist.
