    There's a new 50mm 1.8 on the horizon right now that I'm considering as well. B&H has them on preorder for 125USD. http://www.dpreview.com/articles/3611651742/canon-announces-50mm-f1-8-stm-lens. The specs say it can focus a little closer than its predecessor. As ShadowCaptain said 50mm will equate to 80 on a crop sensor.
