  1. Would anyone happen to know what the iommu groupings are for these motherboards? Do the boards separate devices into their own groups by default, or would someone have to ACS override?
  2. In a similar vein, perhaps you could use one of these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SIMCom-SIM7600A-H-LTE-module-CAT4-Audio-4G-testing-mini-board-3-3v-TTL-logic-US-/263936035669 Note: that version specifically is for AT&T SIMs, you would have to look up which variant of the chip is validated in your region. You would connect it to your computer using the micro-usb port on the board, then install the windows driver the seller provides. After everything's set up, I believe it presents the cellular data connection an option in the network manager. (I haven't used it with my windows computer much, so I don't recall exactly).
  3. There's been a few comments regarding the 5th/6th Gen iPad, as well as the iPad Air 2. Here's an article comparing them: https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/03/28/compared-the-new-2018-sixth-generation-ipad-with-apple-pencil-support-versus-the-2017-ipad-and-ipad-air-2 Personally, I'd rule out the Air 2, unless she has trouble with her current iPad's portability, or if you're able to get a really good deal. In general, I'd expect the 5th gen iPad to be the best deal, since their prices tanked hard when the 6th gens got their Pencil support announced. If you go used, all of these should be under $300 (For reference, I was able to get a 32GB 6th gen iPad w/ Applecare+ for $250 off Craigslist at the beginning of the school year). Maybe go for the 6th gens if she seems like she'll use the Pencil?
  4. I actually just went to a talk on campus about CRISPR and this came up as an example lol
  5. Hello, I've been meaning to back up our digitized family photos/videos/etc for a while now, and was looking for the "best" provider to store them with. Currently, we have ~2TB of files. The reason I've indicated 4TB in the title is because that is the size of our NAS, which the cloud storage would ideally sync with. I'm leaning toward using Microsoft's Onedrive, but wanted to get some additional input before I went ahead with it. I've chosen Onedrive because their Office 365 Home plan allows for 5TB of storage for $100 annually (which --among the larger cloud storage providers-- is the best deal for ~4TB of storage last I checked). Is there a better deal? From what I'm aware of, the other larger providers like Google and Amazon only offer 2TB at this price. Alternatively: how has everyone's experience been with Onedrive? I haven't used it all that much, but if it's inconvenient/inconsistent, then I'll probably opt for a different place. EDIT: Also, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. I wasn't sure if Cloud Storage counted as "Storage" or a "Website/App"
  6. Long story short: Probably not. The user manual / maintenance guide for your laptop probably has the answer, but we can't determine that without the exact model number. Continuing on from the thread regarding the GL552JX-DM292D, the OP mentions that he tries to use a AHCI PCIe SSD, and it fails to work. Referring to the M.2 Wikipedia page we can see that such SSDs attach to the host chipset through PCIe connections, then use the AHCI driver to communicate with the operating system. Since this fails, we can assume that --at least for the DM292D model-- the M.2 SATA port does not have any PCIe connections. If your laptop is similar to this person's, then the GDC Beast will not work via that specific M.2 port due to the lack of PCIe lanes. Hopefully your port ends up being M.2 PCIe. Good Luck
  7. I believe the model number is actually longer, like GL552JX-XXXXXX. More people would probably be able to help if you provided this information. A cursory google search yielded this thread: https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?82031-Gl552jx-m-2-ssd-upgrade-questions where a user verifies that --at least on the GL552JX-DM292D model-- the M.2 slot is SATA only. Thankfully, the EXP GDC Beast is offered in multiple configurations, such as Expresscard, mPCIe, and M.2. I imagine the mPCIe version would work with your laptop (if the M.2 version doesn't work out for you). As for my personal experience: I haven't used the GDC Beast, but I have used the mPCIe solution described here: https://egpu.io/forums/expresscard-mpcie-m-2-adapters/us7-50-generic-mpcie-egpu-adapter/ , which works well for adding a GPU (my Quadro K2000) to my Dell Latitude E5530.
  8. Unfortunately, I don't think there's an official avenue for suggesting video topics on the forums here (However, if you have suggestions for Tech Quickie, you can find the thread for it under Home > The Hub > LTT Official > Thread for Tech Quickie Video Suggestions). Also I feel this topic would be better in "New Builds and Planning" or "Case Modding and Other Mods" considering OP specifying a custom solution. Regarding the idea itself: I'll just leave you with some of the information I've obtained from looking into the subject. Maybe it'll pique your curiosity, maybe it wont. Maybe Linus will see it, maybe he won't.
  9. 1. Not sure. Hopefully someone else can comment. I've gone the other way though. 2. I've had surprisingly good success it. I use it when I have to disable the heated bed. Besides the bottom of the print not being glass-smooth, I didn't see a difference in print quality. 3. Sorry, I actually need parts myself. Mainly a hoted and a relay board.
  10. Sorry, I wasn't very clear in my original comment: The backstabbed feeling was more from the fact that AMD dropped the AM1 platform after 1 generation (which I had mistakenly assumed most people here would be familiar with already). My hope was that the Kaveri-specific performance boost was a more general Sea Islands GPU performance boost (which Kabini also uses), which would have softened the blow of having a dead-after-1-generation platform, but it wasn't the case. Hence, my disappointment (at both AMD and Linux if that makes you feel better).
  11. I was kinda hoping this was indicative of a performance boost for all Sea Island GPUs (and therefore also my Athlon 5150), but if I understand it correctly, it's more of a Kaveri-specific bug-fix isn't it. Feeling really backstabbed with the AM1 platform tbh : \
  12. I thought the main reason why he lost the suit was because he made the DVD's look like official restore disks for Dell (HP? Acer? I forgot). I'll have to go look back and check.
  13. Yeah, I agree. For household use, a regular can opener seems fine (and perhaps even safer). Though, I suppose an argument could be made for places like soup kitchens that might need to open a large number of cans quickly. In any case, apparently it's a common thing now. o_o
  14. Never used an electric can opener before, but apparently they're more common than the manual ones now?
  15. Good point, I hadn't really thought about that. It's a Trek 7100 (?), though I'm not sure about any specific configuration. Thanks; I'll add this info to OP. On a separate note, do the components listed seem compatible to you?
