CPU multiplier stuck at 41

MGsubbie

I have an i7 3770k cooled through a Noctua NH-D14 on an Asus Sabertooth Z77 and powered by an EVGA Supernova G2 750W. At full system load (both synthetic and while video rendering) one core goes up to 63°C and the rest stays under 60°C, meaning thermal throttling or power isn't my issue. I wanted to see how far I could push my CPU.

But whatever multiplier higher than 41 I try, it stays stuck on 41. I double and triplechecked my bios and the values in there are higher than 41. I used several pieces of software and they all tell me it's at 41. What gives?

Your CPU has to be under load to clock up. Are you taking numbers at load?

Intel Core i7-6700K | Corsair H105 | Asus Z170I PRO GAMING | G.Skill TridentZ Series 16GB | 950 PRO 512GB M.2

Try disabling turbo boost and speedstep. If that doesn't help it is possible that your voltage isn't stable enough to clock higher than 41.

Make sure that all cores are synced to the multiplier value that you've set.

Also try experimenting with Ai Suite (as bad as it can be sometimes) to see if you can do an all core overclock to say 44x just to test it out.

According to speccy my voltage is 1.152V.

Try slowly bumping up the voltage and see if that helps. Temps should be fine due to your cooler but don't go overboard.

  • 2 months later...

I know the topic is old, but found the solution, wanted to leave it behind if someone stumbles onto this topic. It was a limitation of an older BIOS, I updated it and now I'm free to overclock further.
