Wolf's Pride

Sneakyfox169

Hello everyone and welcome to my first PC build log. So I was going to call my new pc (because if swords can have names then why not pc's ? :P) Dragon's Rage because I was going to go with a i7 5930k, a MSI X99S Gaming 9 ACK and an AMD Fury X, so with the heat of the gpu and the mobo it was going to resemble the idea of a dragon, and since it's my first beast pc, something a bit badass was kinda nice. But my plans took a 180 when the Fury X came out. It was so hyped and everything and yet in the end it only had 4 gb of vram and hbm isn't magic 4 gb of hbm is only just 4 gb and with skyrim alone I need 5 to 5.5 gb so the Fury X was a no go. I am very brand loyal, but I'm not a fan boy so I've decided to go for the 980ti, that meant I had to ditch the Gaming 9 ACK and at the same time decided to ditch the 5930k as well since it's pretty much (if not completely) a 5820k with 12 more lanes. I don't think I'm going to go sli and even if I do, 3.0 pci-e @ 8x is equal to 16x pci-e 2.0, which is still plenty today. So since it wasn't going to be a red fire spitting anti-eco-friendly beast, it's gone to Wolf's Pride cus wolves are awesome and I quit like my new pc. I'm currently stuck with some issues with the build, currently it's the water cooling which isn't working. But it should eventually get sorted out ( I hope at least) and I'll be able to enjoy a ballin pc as Linus would say. So enough chit-chat the specs :

-Corsair 760t Black Version

-Corsair AX1200i

-Intel I7 5820K

-Inno3D iChill 980ti X3 Air Boss Ultra (like I said I'm really brand loyal so I'd be tempted to go with an MSI Card but since they'd both be reference design, I'm gonna watercool it and the Inno3D is cheaper I have nothing to push me to the MSI card unfortunately... ah first world problems)-not acquired yet

-G.Skill Ripjaws 32/64 Gb 2666 Mhz (I'm not sure if I'm going to go to 64, I'd be tempted to make a ram disc and then have virtually no loading times on games like Skyrim and stuff so we'll see)-currently have 32Gb

-SanDisk 240Gb Ultra II SSD's x6 in raid 0 for POWER (The other reason I'm not sure on the ram disk since I should get some decently fast speeds with that raid 0.)-not acquired yet

-Alphacool 360 30mm Rad

-Alphacool 280 60mm Rad

-Laing DDC-3.2 Pwm Pump

-MasterKleer 10/13mm Blue Tubing

-Aerocool Dead Silence 140 x 4

-Aerocool Dead Silence 120 x 6

-Bitfenix Spectre Pro 140 which came from my old build which may get replaced since it's much louder than the rest of my pc.

Pic's will come but my phone is dead sooooooo need it to charge.

Incoming Pics  :D By the way I'll go over any and all problems I've had so that if people are using the same parts or need a hand they might find help here. So I went with Aerocool Dead Silence fans because I was using some Noctua NF-12 3000 rpm, and those things, while they push a metric butt ton of air at some massive pressures are louder than jets on take off, so I've discovered myself to be enjoying silence. However I soon had a problem. With the third fan in place I couldn't put the fitting, the fan came to far, so I had to go in the basement a grind a bit of the fan cage off, turns out I didn't have to grind nearly as much off as I did and I could have made marks instead or just rushing down but it gets the job done so yeah. (Forgive the hobbit feet, too hot here to be wearing slippers).

I was then frustrated by a screw that hadn't had it's head drilled out (well however the process of taking out the metal in the key hole is called.) Can't see it too well in the pic but it was almost flush with the head itself, so had to use a pair of pliers to screw it in, a bit frustrating considering that rads aren't the cheapest thing and they don't give a single spare.

Anyway, I soldiered on and got all three push fans on the rad with the fittings.

Did the same with the 280 rad though the pull fans only this time.

Once all that was done time to have a first look at my shiny new cpu, and boy is it big, for comparision, my old 2600K is next to it.

Now to start building in the case.

My old CD/DVD player already in there, I do still use one for music discs and stuff, just like keeping one around in case I need it. Getting it in the case though led to more frustration, and I don't know if this is on everyone's 760t, could be just mine as I haven't found other people complaining about it, but the bay covers use a thick plastic that intrudes on the 5.25 inch spaces which means that a standard 5.25 inch device won't go in as it is, if it is on every case then that is lazy work in my opinion, you just need to test once to realize that there's a problem, it's like they don't expect you to use the bays and so just put them there for marketing purposes. Maybe not to such an extent but it left me with two choice, either grind the plastic off of my CD/DVD players or grind off the front of my brand new, something I like to avoid because it is brand new. And this case is on the expensive side so I was disappointed it didn't work out of the box. In the end I ground off the plastic off of my cd/dvd player to make it fit, but I couldn't grind off the side of the bay res that I'm using with meant that I had to file off the edges of the front panel, work I believe I shouldn't have had to do.

Back to the build though, got the top and front rad's in, though it was a bit hard on my own and again frustration wasn't far. The holes on the 280 on the holes on the case didn't line up, so I spent hours just trying to get them lined up with a screw driver by widening the case holes. I was also frustrated that some of the screw that came with the rads weren't brilliant, they stripped pretty easily even when it wasn't very tight which has kept me from tightening it as much as I'd like to. The others screws though were put under much more stress and held up fine, so I may just have had a bad batch.

Did some early (small) cable management with the fan cables, that was at least trouble free and the holes are pretty well placed so I didn't have to twist and bend the cables which was quite nice, I had a NZXT M59 case before that I love, but the cable management space exists only in the wonderful land of your imagination.

I've regretted not getting a 45 mm 360 rad from the second that I placed the order but actually, now I'm glad I played it safe, because the top heat sink of the motherboard on the fan in push on the top rad are very very close neighbors.

Time for the AX1200i and my current, soon to be retired, but loyal and loved 7970 to go in for it's final moments, as I was ordering the watercooling stuff which included the block and backplate for the 980ti I felt bad not also ordering a block and backplate for my 7970 which I believe I got a pretty good overclocker, on air it'll reach 1250/1610 on 1.237v, and without artifacts until it reaches 65/70 degrees, so if it was water cooled I wonder how much more I could push it. Love my 7970, sad to see it go.

I've done a decent cable management that once it's done and everything is in place, it'll be pretty clean looking. It's already not too bad in my humble opinion but because I currently have nowhere to put my hard drive which is acting as the main drive until I get the ssd's, I can't fully clean it up.

Well that's it for now, still missing the ssd's and the 980ti. Gotta figure out why the water cooling loop has virtually no effect on the cpu temps, the hoses look kinda goofy for now but once it'll go down to the gpu and to the front rad it'll look better. (I hope at least)

You may have noticed the pci plate and pcb under my 7970, well it's some blue LED's, which I should have ordered the 2 meter version action, may fix that up later, so here's the final pics for now in the early stage with the different brightness levels, it's a WIP but this should except for the lighting, Hard drive and gpu be fairly representative of what'll look like, cheers.
