Will this power supply be enough?

SammySung

I have an R9 290 that I'm trying to put in a system with i7 920 - 6GB ddr3 - 1 hdd - dvd/cd drive. Processor won't be overclocked(but maybe in future with very mild overclock to decrease the small bottleneck on gpu) and rest of system is stock as you can see. 3x 200mm fans and 1x 120mm fan.

The power supply is antec earthwatts 500w with 22 amps on two 12 volt rails. Ordinarily I'd think this supply would be relatively insufficient for an r9 290. But recently I watched a linus tech tips video for their "scrapyard wars" series where they compete to see who builds best $300 second hand rig. Linus assistant built a tower with an r9 290 that was powered by an antec basiq 500w, which is a worse supply. It has 18 amps on two 12 volt rails. From watching many videos he's very hardware knowledgeable and acted as though the supply he got was plenty and he was excited he landed it at the price he got it for. When they benchmarked their towers to see who won the challenge, they overclocked the processors and gpu's(I don't know how much) then ran a few games and firestrike. Seeing him do this with an r9 290(xfx stock cooler version) on an antec basiq 500w made me wonder if I could do it on my slightly better supply?

I know what the amd suggested power is, but it's very conservative at 650w. As I said I will not be overclocking, should I be okay? It's only option right now as money is very tight on this build. Already have supply and gpu, just waiting to apply them : )

550 is the lowest I will recommend but 22 amps is enough

you are fine.

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Your current psu is fine.

You'll be perfectly fine at stock but I wouldn't overclock for the sake of reliability on that relatively dated PSU. First-gen i7 isn't the power-sipping chips that today's i7s are, that was back in the day when they used just as much power as AMD's offerings.
