Monitor Connections?

I'm attempting my first build and I don't know much about the different type's of connections monitors use and which one is the best and most common connection type. Also I would like some help choosing a monitor that I can buy two of without spending over $500, preferably $400.

I'd say most people use either HDMI or VGA, I'd suggest going with DVI, Display Port, or HDMI as VGA is old and crappy.
