Overclocking i7 4770k help?!? MSI Mpower Z87 Help D:

I recently built my computer back in february and just upgraded my cpu cooling to an h100i from corsair. No leaks, works right out of the box (just what I would suspect from corsair). I get 60 degrees under load at 3.9Ghz and was wondering if anyone could Tell me /teach me how to overclock this beast. The thing is, I already looked up tons of videos on how to overclock the i7, but THEY DON"T USE THE SAME BIOS. Im running the REGULAR Z87 Mpower MotherBoard from MSI and apparently it is an extremely high-quality board, but the Bios was designed for tinkerers. I get that the CPU ratio is X times 100. so 46= 4.6Ghz. And that I do have to increase the voltage on my cpu to ~1.2-1.3 depending on my cooling. I've tried putting in numbers from other similar setups *caugh* Linus *caugh* and got a black screen? It posted, but didn't load into windows... Does that mean my i7 4770k is one of the bad ones, or did I do something wrong?

Overclock in small steps, if you go all out you won't want your chip is stable at.

OCing is an entire series of trial and error. If that config just went black, then it was bad, so the voltage wasn't good enough for the multiplier or the multiplier is too high. Keep going at it! Either increase voltage or reduce clock ratio and continue until it is stable to your liking.

Alright, I think im going to put it at 1.25 voltage and start from 4.0 and slowly increase it till I think it's not stable, then run the stress test on intel extreme tuner... I just have to figure out the weird bios setup.. Unlike the ROG motherboards I see people using this one has a crap ton more of settings D:

Hmm That was strange. I guess it needed more voltage. I put the CPU to 4.5Ghz with 1.2 Volts and it gave me a black screen with the Post Code A2. Looked up the code, and found out it was a sata issue... Replaced a cable on my SSD sata and got an un-registered code of 99. I toggled OC genie and went into the bios and tweaked the voltage to 1.25v and dropped the OC to 4.3Ghz and it runs great at 70 Degrees Celcius under full load. I guess I got a medium-grade i7, but eh. I think Im going to push it for 4.5-4.6 Ghz.. Going to talk to some of my teamspeak friends who have the same CPU..

Fuck me, Right after typing that I get a Bsod... 10/10 trolll intel. LOL. I raised the CPU voltage to 1.23 instead of 1.25 and I was able to get back into windows. What is the max Voltage I (would) want to put on my cpu? and what role does Processor Cache Ratio play in overclocking?

Edit:

I got it to 4.2 ghz without crashing. I think I need a better psu so it can get a cleaner voltage oin it. I have some 50$ psu from coolermaster I got for 30$. It's 80+ bronze and has 620Watts, but I guess Anything over my 1.27 voltage my computer says no beuno :C The CPU sits at a stable 73 degrees under full load :)

I will be revising the stress testing section soon, but the core fundamentals are all there. same bios is in my videos :)

check er out and give er a ride.

I see your processor input voltage is @ default.

All the info is in the guide.

I can't wait to do this crap in the morning LOL. Going to clear the Cmos from the botton on the IO Panel on the Mpower Mobo. Then boot it from the USB that has the files for the latest bios from the MSI SITE?

ya people like to clear cmos befor a bios update.

download version 1.8 from msi ste, throw that bad boy on a usb drive and flash from the bios.

I personally like to hit the bios selector switch and use the second bios chip, when tryin out a new bios.

Aaand my proccessor is in the bottom 20% Lawl. It won't go near 4.4 ghz, 4.2-4.3 is it's stable zone on 1.28 Volts LOL. Could be my psu but I doubt it. I got the batch from CostaRica 3334C >.> All the costaricas on the database are <4.6 and the ones that are 4.5 are custom loop LOL.... The ones from Malay must be the best lol.

I think thats some urban legend stuff, but I have not tried a costa haswell chip. all my chips are malay.

ask intel for a cpu die that was cut close to the center of the silicone wafer, these are typically the better overclockers :) if only we could.
