I would shoot for a 4th gen i7 and z87 if you can the 3930k is gonna be awesome, but high power draw can scare some people away.

I'm currently on a FX8350 and I want to upgrade but RAM prices are just way too high currently. I'm looking at a 3930k with a X79 motherboard for £200 but I'm unsure if it's worth it or not - future wise too. It looks like it still holds up but just want to be sure. Thanks

What X79 motherboard is it? I'd advise against buying those £60/70 no brand ones from China.

I only thought about the 3930k because it has 6c12t which would be more beneficial to me

You need to consider the pretty substantial bump in power draw you will end up with the 3930k overclocked. You will see better performance with single thread work loads with haswell as well as a lower overall power draw for the system.

Yea, would you recommend me going for 4th gen then?

I personally would, you can get your self a decent motherboard and a used 4770/4790k for a good price. Just from recent experience I would stray away from Gigabyte if you can z87/z97 with gigabyte wasn't the greatest.

A guy was selling his whole PC and I just asked if I could have the mobo and cpu lol

Ohh, okay then lol. I'd say go for it. If you can't get a 4th gen i7 and a Z87 board then go for it. The 3930k is still very much a well performing CPU.

Seems like a silly question, but with the 4770 or 4790 I'd be able to stream my games right?

I have a Gigabyte B85 board (not the same chipset but still LGA 1150) and that seems to be pretty decent.

I also think @Baifish should go for 4th gen i7 if they can.

Yes you would be fine I use a 4770 myself as I'm still waiting for some more boards to hit the market and CPU's be more readily available.

I literally had my z97 Gaming 3 die on me yesterday plugging in a SATA cable, I tore my system down reseated everything and it was still borked. Plus it wasn't a true ATX size it was ATX height but like a quarter of an inch short of being regular ATX length.

Oh damn, that sucks.. I'd steer clear of Gigabyte then.
