Could HDDs be.... overclocked?

We all know that there are different versions of HDDs that spin at different RPMs. Generally it's 5400, 7200, and sometimes something in the 10000 range. 

 

So... what if... say... you took a 5400 RPM drive, and forced it to spin at 7200 RPM? Would the head keep up? Would it work? If yes, would there be a speed improvement? I would imagine that the HDD knows how fast the platters are spinning, and adjusts the movement of the head to match. I think it'd be dumb to just "assume" the platters are spinning at exactly 5400 RPM and move the head based on that. So if the head does compensate, how much could you push it?

 

I'm not saying for a normal person obviously. You'd probably need to partially dissemble the drive to even do this, but it'd be an interesting experiment. 

 

I suppose the base question here is "What's the fundamental difference between a 5400 RPM drive and a 7200 RPM drive?" Are they identical except for software/hardware limiting to limit the speed?

 

EDIT: This is a THEORETICAL question. I don't actually want to do this. (Although I would like to see linus do this.) I don't need faster storage, I have plenty of SSD storage.

I would think they have different controllers for both the current/voltage (probably higher voltage) to the motor and the motor itself. Besides that, I bet not much. Well, and firmware obviously.

 

But, so... if you do want to "speed up" a ahrddrive, you can always short stroke it... Something I did when I had RAID 0 Vraps actually. Man, those where the days lol.

You wouldn't be overclocking it but probably overvolting the motor. I have seen videos of people spinning them until they blow up but I doubt the drive would be able to read anything outside of the spec it's designed for. It would be much easier and reliable to buy an SSD. They are really cheap now
