Laptop Cooling

Which one is better, laptop cooler or a simple laptop stand/riser ?
I watched a couple of videos for laptop coolers and saw that the performance was the same even if there is a small drop of temps (3-5°C). So a laptop cooler won't do much. But I'm maybe thinking will a simple laptop riser do the thing. Like it's rising the laptop above the surface it's facing and letting his built in air flow to do it's job.
And I'm considered, will that laptop riser help me get any better performance on my laptop, due the fact I'm letting more air in ?
