Hello, I'm replacing i5-4460 for i7-9700k, but I will need a new motherboard and DDR4 RAM.

Will MSI Z390-A PRO - Intel Z390 be good enough?

I might upgrade my GPU (MSI GTX 1060 6 GB) in the future to something like RTX 2080 ti. I have good quality PSU and i7-9700k should handle future GPUs.

Would this motherboard handle RTX 2080 ti too?

Some people say this is not a gaming motherboard. What do more expensive motherboards have except for WiFi adapters, more expansion slots, crazy nitrogen-like overclocking, RGB lightning etc.?

Thank you for advice ?

Well, it is one of the lower end 390 motherboards out there, and not really a good fit for the 9700k, especially if you are going to oc. And more expensive mobos have better vrms, sound quality, are more durable, etc

Sorry to derail but what is the mindset behind buying sub-$300 video cards to $1200-$1300 video cards (that cost more than your entire system) as an upgrade?

Hey, I might upgrade by Honda Accord for a Ferrari?

I mean if you're running mid-range gear, what prompts you to go ultra high end like that?  Just curious, really.  My divorce pushed me to go from $300 to $700, so I can understand part of it.  770 to 1080Ti (but I went monitor too, so needed the beefcake).

Also, everything you're talking about getting is on the low side, especially no OC.

You will also need to get a decent cpu cooler. The i7-9700K does not have a stock cooler and the i5-4460 stock cooler would likely prove inadequate for a Coffee Lake Refresh cpu.

Basicly, I recently bought 240hz monitor and found out that i5-4460 is bottlenecking me especially in Fortnite (50% GPU usage, 100% CPU usage) or Assassin's Creed: Oddysey (GPU: 70 %, CPU: 100 %). I am hoping that better CPU could also speed up turns in Civilization 5, Europa Universalis IV and make occasional video-editing faster.

If I play at low settings, my GPU will manage 240 FPS in CS GO and Fortnite. So I'm sticking with that for 2-3 years at least.

Thanks for warning. I already have Cooler Master Hyper 212X on i5-4460 which I can use.

I'm not sure a Hyper 212X will be sufficient for sustained loads, but it's worth a try.

$800 in total (i7-9700k, 2x8 DDR4 RAM, motherboard)

I would like to get a good motherboard for $200.

The z390 that @brob mentioned is a solid one, or if you live in the U.S., the ASRock Z390 Taichi is on sale for $200, including MIR

I was thinking about buying a new one. Which one would you recommend?

If you prefer air, a Dark Rock Pro 4 or (depending on memory module height), an NH-D15 or NH-D15S.

An aio might be a better investment if there is any plan to overclock. The H100i Pro or X62 rev 2 would be decent. If the case can accommodate a larger radiator the H150i Pro or X72 would also do decent jobs.

Ah right so the cooler above wouldn't fit as the max is 150mm. Something like an Arctic Cooler 33 Esports would fit it you can get hold of one.

So, if I don't overclock much, it should work fine, right?
Coller Master 212X

MSI MAG Z390 TOMAHAWK - Intel Z390

DDR4 2666MHz memory

i7-9700K

If the cooler isn't enough and temps go over 65, I will get a better one. About the motherboard, I'm not sure yet.

MSI MAG Z390 TOMAHAWK costs about $35 more than MSI Z390-A PRO. Is it any better? I need the chipset to be Z390 for i7-9700k... I think.
