Need help on installing windows

Go to solution Solved by Judahnator,

Tried 4 different versions. Without any stuff poured in it, like additional programs and etc. A clean version to say so.

Two of them didn't install on my USB flash drive. Other two got the same message that I need to insert a CD to proceed.

The software I used to install Windows to USB flash drive were: rufus_v1.4.1 ( Windows XP ) Windows 7 USB DVD download tool ( Windows 8, I know it's for windows 7 but it works with 8 too, installed Win 8 on my brothers laptop while using it)

try using a program called YUMI

It has worked with every OS i have ever tried to install

Hey there people.

So here I am, sitting and punching my head and trying to install Windows XP on my old laptop.

Model name is Asus F5R. My CD/DVD drive is broken, laser in specific, disk spins but it doesn't get scanned.

So I'm trying to install Windows XP from a USB flash drive. I used quite a lot of programs to do it and I actually succeeded. Almost.

My motherboard supports USB flash drive boot. I can fire up the install from bios or the quick start with ESC on launch.

So here's the main problem.

As soon as the setup fires up, it checks everything in my system and then a message pops.

" Please insert one of the following windows product cd's " And it lists three versions of windows.

Basically it asks me for a original Windows Xp CD, and as you know the problem is that my CD/DVD drive does not work.

Sooooo, how do I fix this?

P.S. I tried other versions of windows like Windows 8 but it just restarts when setup is loading. I think because my laptop does not support it.

It only supports Windows XP and Windows Vista ( At least drivers are available just for those OS's) And my CPU is Pentium, 32 bit.

P.P.S. I'm re-installing Windows because my OS got screwed, files got corrupted. When I tried to boot my laptop on, Windows wouldn't launch, it asked for a CD to repair the files that have been corrupted. When I tried to install Windows at first time with an USB flash drive it asked me to format my HDD, I did that. So my HDD is empty now, at least drive C. But when I fire up my system and boot up from HDD it says that NTLDR is missing.

I think your in hot waters m8 D:

Stupid question, windows 7 usb install 32 bit version asks for a cd?

Well I haven't tried Windows 7 yet. I tried to install Windows XP while using Windows 7 USB program. It just didn't work, fails at completing it.

And I think my laptop does not support Windows 7 thought. Drivers are only compatible with Vista/XP. I'm getting Windows 7 32bit atm ( Arghhhh Capt'n)

What is PXE Boot? I haven't tried it.

i cant realy go in depth here but i could help you with the seting it up but pxe boot is loading a small os like thingy over the network that allows you to install win over the network without needing a usb or cd this is often used in large companys so they can do an update from like say win xp to 7 by going into network boot and selecting an image

If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough it will be believed.

Well I tried booting Windows 8 but it fails while initializing. I just get that Windows 8 logo on the screen for like 40 seconds and then, Bam, laptop is restarting.

I have seen that when installing winXP. It usually means your ISO is corrupt. Try torrenting another file.

Its 100% legal as long as you have a product key for it.

also, i tend to have better luck installing from usb

I'll try that now. And thanks guys for trying to help me! (:

Edit: But it's for Linux distributions O.o  Oh sorry, found Xp at the bottom!

P.S. I'll take a photo of that screen which is asking for a CD if it occurs this time.

Ah dang it, one file, videx32.inf cannot be copied. I'll try to skip it and see what happens.

From now on I'll try to mess up with things on my own. If it fails I'll format D and install Windows there and etc.

And thanks again Judahnator!

Edit: I installed first part of Windows without any errors on partition D. I executed part 2 and I got an error that a disk read error occured. :|

Another edit: Did a full format of partition D, Windows Part 1 and Part 2 installed without any errors. It's working now. (:
