I don't think game servers have to be very powerful. Unless you have more than 4 or 5 people, probably a good old AMD dual core will be fine.

 

Just make sure you have a good NIC (intel and qualcomm are the best I think) and plenty of RAM (probs 4GB or more).

 

Linux is always going to be more stable than windows long term as well, and plus it's free :)

Agreed, on a spare server I use at home I can use all of the 6 gigs for game servers fairly easily. 

 

I recently read an Instructable which made a server for minecraft using a raspberry pi.

That thing has 512MB of RAM yet played fine.

 

I guess it all depends on usage.
