What monitor is that going to drive? This answer can change quite a lot the build. And I think the Dark Rock 4 Pro is a bit overkill, I would go with the non-pro one.

For 144Hz, you'll want Intel, something like:

Feel free to change parts to match the aesthetics you want, but I think this is pretty solid and beautiful. You can go with an i7 8700k and Z370 to save money no problem, and also buy a cheaper AiO, I just put this one because it's gorgeous IMO. You can also go with a 500GB SSD to save some more and go with another case as you will.

Yes, but 1440p makes it such that there is little to no difference between intel and amd cpu’s, assuming you’re comparing apples to apples right?(2700x vs 8700k, 2600 vs 8400 etc) Thought Intel only has a significant benefit in performance in 1080p gaming, and ryzen is way cheaper too.

Also, 3200mhz is overkill for intel right? Wouldn’t it be better also to get a small capacity extremely fast m.2 drive just for boot drive?

Is a CPU is more powerful at 1080p, it will be at 1440p, 4k, 8k, any resolution, what usually causes the impression that Ryzen closes the gap is the GPU bottleneck. AFAIK, Ryzen doesn't perform well enough for 144Hz, it can reach the 100-120fps, but can't get to 144fps and beyond like Intel, which can sometimes keep a 1% low comparable to the Ryzen's average. Ryzen is not a bad choice nor will perform badly, but Intel will allow for the more stable 144fps+. You would need a RTX 2080 Ti to keep close to 144fps at 1440p in AAA games, so no GPU in your price range will stay over 100fps in all games, but in the games your GPU can keep 144fps+, the Ryzen CPU would bottleneck that. I'm making a large generalization from what I've seen, so take it with a grain of salt.

 

To sum it up: In heavy AAA games, the RTX 2080 won't keep 144fps, in lighter games, the 2700x might not keep 144fps, you might want to check game-by-game for the CPU side, which is much less predictable, but an Intel CPU would make sure you have the highest chance of getting 144fps whenever your GPU can handle it. And as I said, you can save some money in various different ways in the build I put together.

Overkill? Maybe, can't say that for sure, but it's not too high of a frequency, 3000 and 3200 are rather common for performance PCs, the 4000MHz+ is the overkill range, maybe even 3800MHz. But I chose that RAM because of it's look, and the difference in price among speeds was close to none. I would recommend not going lower than 3000MHz because it's pretty cheap nowadays, but you can choose any other RAM, just pay attention to CAS latency (or CL), don't get anything above 16.

 

I swapped the SSD because it was meant for another $2k build, but you can go with a Samsung 970 Evo for example, or any other NVMe SSD if the 970 is too expensive. 500GB is just fine as well. Just make sure the SSD is NVMe, even if it is M.2 it might be SATA.

Hm, I’ll take that into consideration. Would it be worth it to invest in a ryzen system and sacrifice a little fps, to wait for Zen 2? Since Zen 2 is compatible with AM4 boards and it’s pretty promising I thought I might be better off going for ryzen first

It's a never ending question of waiting more and more until you die for better hardware. Zen 2 will have a 13% IPC gain from the rumors, which sounds reasonable, but still, Intel would stay ahead of Zen 2 with their current lineup, maybe Zen 2+ manages to consistently hit 144fps, that would be an easy upgrade if you were in the AM4 platform. In this case you have to question yourself how much you care about FPS and what GPU you'll use, in the case of the RTX 2080, it's a fair pairing because depending on the game, one or the other won't be capable of hitting 144fps, but how much does it matter past 100fps? You'll probably sit in the 100-120fps worst case, I would say, and if you get yourself a G-Sync monitor, that's a non-issue, so it's somewhat personal if you care about constant 144fps+, if you don't and have a G-Sync, I think I would go with Ryzen as well. In that case, look for the fastest memory possible to reduce the possible bottleneck to a minimum and OC the hell out of that Ryzen. I'm actually tending towards Ryzen atm, but as I said, it's personal and depends on the monitor, although tearing isn't too bad in the 100fps range, G-Sync would make it flawless.
