upgrading to 8400

You would need a new motherboard for that, an upgrade to a 7700 would be a better option.

Pre-built systems are usually pretty proprietary, so upgrading usually isn't just as simple as getting a new motherboard. A 7700 on the other hand, will plug and play.

Some motherboards supports 8th gen CPU with a bios update or a custom one. I know a guy who can customize the bios on z170 and make it support 8th gen CPU, no hyperthreading tho.

I doubt the OP would want to go through that hassle.

Besides, even with having to mod the BIOS, a 7700 would be an easier option and will take less time. The performance difference between the two chips isn't that big, UserBenchmark is showing a 7% overall difference.

You could certainly run a GTX 750 Ti. Though finding a low profile one these days might be hard. If finding one is challenging, a GT 1030 performs about the same and you can easily find those in low profile forms.
