Remote desktop over local network

Yep, indeed there is, I use it every other day

Assuming you're using Windows as a host and server, you can use Remote Desktop Connection

You can connect using any version of Windows 7 or 8, but can only connect to computers running Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate, or Enterprise, or Windows 8 Pro or Enterprise

If it's not supported or you're using Linux you can set up a VNC server, I prefer to use TightVNC

After that it's all up to firewall and software configuration, but it's pretty simple and straightforward

You can check here for some software ideas http://alternativeto.net/software/remote-desktop-connection. I have to be 100% honest and say that i've never done a remote desktop connection for the simple fact that i've never needed a reason to. I also would caution to note that TeamViewer may not be able to do LAN connections in the free version https://www.teamviewer.com/en/help/40-Can-TeamViewer-be-used-within-a-local-network-LAN-only.aspx

Good Luck.

Other than RDP (which is what you should use if you are running WinPro versions)...

I would like to add UltraVNC to the list. I have found it to be less finicky than RealVNC on some networks. But I would try RealVNC first.

At work I have an old XP Pro machine that I need for the serial port and software support to pull files off an old piece of test gear. I didn't want two computers on the desk so I put it in the closet and use Windows' RDP over LAN and it works just fine.
