Hi, Im very new to all this server and NAS stuff and want to host my own local server at home as across my devices and computers I have TB's of data that I dont want to delete and want in a more contained and backed up space.

Also im thinking if im going to host a server to back up all my data and games why not also a media server so i can stream all my music and videos to any of my devices.

Could someone explain what i would need to set up a server to achieve this, not worrying about budget yet just wanting to get a grips on what parts i would need so i know where in my home to put it.

You probably want plex or simmilar for a media server, a local file server with smb/cifs.

How many tb are we thinking? Do you care about noise and power? How much do you like to tinker.

how much do i like to tinker? very little, i like to plug in and it works from start, only tinker if adding new drives, parts, etc

do i care about noise and power? no not really, i mean sure no noise and little power would be a nice addition but wouldn't bother me that much

how many tb we thinking? without going to each pc and checking i would say around 3-4 tb but its very likely yo grow a ton in the future, as im a hoarder and dont delete shit

If you want a plug and play solution, id get a nas like this. https://www.amazon.com/Synology-bay-DiskStation-DS918-Diskless/dp/B075N1Z9LT

You can get cheaper or more expensive models, but this will be about as plug and play as you can get, and will have easy to install package for most tasks.

get a used server, or simply an old computer if you don't have any already. install some new harddrives and for further questions about software setup, don't ask me. Way too busy with it myself

i have been thinking that a small nas box wouldn't cut it for what i wanted, the backing data up and streaming to different devices or that they would allow installing extra packages on top of what comes "in the box", every file / media server I've seen on youtube has been a big rack of network switches and drive bays stashed away in some corner but i guess a small nas box is more than capable

thanks, for the tip though, i'l keep it in mind.

These are pretty capable, and you don't need a rack for what your doing. This will easily work as a media server and transcode a stream or two, and do all of what you listed. Its a full x86 computer in here running linux, with a easy to use web gui. Id give it a shot.
