I've currently got a very old 220W AMP, ancient and needs updating.

Ive got 2x 400W passive speakers and 2x 25w old passive speakers.

Im looking at getting 2x 600W passive speakers to replace the 2x 25w speakers.

However the 2 new ones would be 1/4" Jack and im not sure how i would connect these to a amp?

Suggestions for amps and power would be lovely...

Thanks,

Oli

All of this depends on specifics.

What speakers are you looking to buy?

What form factor are you looking for?

How much are you willing to spend?

What source do you intend to be using?

I said 2x 600W Speakers

form factor, i don't know what that is!

Budget:£200-£300

source is coming from a mixer. currently RCA.

But are you pushing 600W into 2 ohm or 16 ohm? specifics... what make and model.

form factor: are you looking for something along the lines of a small form factor amp, a car amp (usually 24 or 48V), a hifi separate style amp or a 19'' rack mount amp? Or do you not mind?

What mixer? what outputs does it have (balanced or only RCA...)

2 of these speakers: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Behringer-VS1220-Eurolive-600W-Speaker/dp/B0029RKM50

and i currently have 2 400W speakers which does not state the ohms.

not a car amp, a more of a hifi amp, because im running hifi speakers however the 400ws do have 1/4" connectors and the new speakers ONLY have 1/4" inch connectors on.

Mixer outputs XLR and the cable ends up at RCA, wouldnt know if it was balanced or not but mixer is Xenyx X1204USB

So the VS-1220 quote 150W RMS 600W peak, so looking at amps which will push ~150W average constant power. Also it's worth noting that you'll never be running the speakers at their full power, as it would be far too loud for reasonable listening. Personally I'd not look hifi amps just for amplification, unless you also want any processing/routing they can provide.

Assuming you're not planning on running your existing speakers off the same amp:

A few options, all of which are slightly overpowered but for various reasons it's better to have slightly more power available than you need (although some will argue with that):

Crown XLI800 (straight amplifier, no processing)

Crown XLS1002 (adds some processing control and built in variable crossover if you ever add a sub)

Behringer A800 (straight amplifier, no processing)

Behringer NX1000 (the most hifi looking, straight amplifier)

The VS-1220 use 6.35mm TS Jack connectors, and all but the nx1000 have terminals for bare cable ends. Unless you feel like making your own cables I would suggest buying cables the length you need, just ake sure they are speaker cable (not mic.instrument cable) and should be 2 core and doesn't need shielding, if you see shielding mentioned it's not speaker cable. Will look something like this.

All the amps listed above have xlr input, so you may as well make use of the balanced conntion (helps with resistance to EMI and electrical noise), normal xlr should be used to connect from the mixer to the amp.

Depending on what amp you're currently running then it may be suitable already...

I would be looking at having my current speakers on the same amp, so it would be 4 speakers total... I The new ones are TS 6.35MM only but my current speakers can be connected by HIFI or TS.

as for the TS 6.34MM setup, do i have to have 1 6.35mm jack cable running to them or 2? they have 2 ports and wasnt sure what theyre for?...

Thanks for the help!

They have two jacks so you can link out to another speaker.

Linkingyour older speakers in the chain should be fine, but it would be useful to know their rated impedance to be certain, as that will affect the power the amp will push out.

but what amp would i get to push out 2x hifi and 2x TRS?

So long as there isn't too much difference in power handling, and they aren't stupidly low impedance, you can simply run them in parallel. If you only want stereo. The connector they use doesn't matter, so long as you keep positive and negative continuity.

If you want a four way system then you'll need 4 channels of amplification. Again, knowing the specifics (impedance and power handling) I can't suggest any specific amp.
