time machine to smb server...?

i'm trying to set up time machine to backup to my file server. however if i go to select backup disk it's not listed there even though the share i want to backup to is connected...

 

i'm using macOS High Sierra 10.13.6

The disk shows up in Finder and Disk Utility?

The problem with Time Machine is that it requires HFS+ formatted disks. I'm assuming your SMB share is most likely ext4 or FAT. I've found this that *may* help, or it may not. https://www.imore.com/how-use-time-machine-backup-your-mac-windows-shared-folder
