Hey Folks,

I'm trying to restore a backup of Win 10 to the SSD drive on my ASUS G750jw laptop and I get this error message: "The specified volume extent is not within the public region of the disk." I have no clue what that means or how to fix it. Any suggestions how to fix it?

Thanks

Bart

Hello BartJY,

This seems to be related to basic and dynamic disk types, Windows Disk Management allows you to convert dynamic disk to basic disk, but Windows Disk Management has a lot of limitations. If you want to convert dynamic disk to basic disk, you have to delete all volumes on dynamic disk first.

You can see How to convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk from Disk Management for more but there are also third party tools to do this change and vice versa, one tool would be EaseUS, I quote the following from their document How to Change Dynamic Disk to Basic Disk Safely and Easily?:

"There are many reasons why many users choose dynamic disk, such as disk and volume management tasks are performed without having to restart the computer afterward, dynamic disks support an unlimited number (up to 2000) of volumes, and volumes can be extended.

Many users prefer basic disk because of the following reasons: they think the basic disk is the most compatible disk type; dynamic disk cannot be resized directly before Windows Vista; dynamic disk only exists after Windows 2000 version and many other reasons."

See their other document How to Convert/Change Basic Disk to Dynamic Disk to do the change the other way around.

Hopefully changing from one to the other will help you get rid of the error message.

Thanks for your response.

It was a dynamic disk, but I change it back to basic. But, I did not delete the volumes before I did. Now that it is basic with undeleted volumes. Is it possible to change it back to a dynamic disk then delete the volumes, or will I need a third party tool?

Thank you for responding.

On the Windows disk management only when converting from dynamic to basic is when you have to delete all volumes, but that is a requirement on Windows Disk management, third party tools like EaseUS may not require you to do so and most likely it will also allow you to convert back to dynamic without deletion of anything. I am not totally sure if Windows Disk Management requires deletion of volumes/partitions from basic to dynamic, but like I said before from dynamic to basic the WDM do require this step to be completed.
