Hey. I am going to upgrade my CPU i currently use a i5-7400. I need the best that works with my socket. I get nervous with upgrades so any help would be great. I currently have my eyes on a i7-7700k But again I get nervous so i rely on others.

what would you be doing to warrent the need to upgrade. 

7400 is a good chip, depending on the scenario.

Not worth upgrading to another i5, so the only meaningful upgrades you can make are i7s. I7 6700, 6700k, 7700, and 7700k are all upgrades for you. If you can't overclock, the 6700k will be a lot like the 7700, so 7700k is the absolute best CPU for your socket.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

 

Primary PC:

i7 8086k (won) - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

 

Linux Proliant ML150 G6:

Dual Xeon X5560 - 24GB ECC DDR3 - GTX 750 TI - old Seagate 1.5TB HDD - dark mode Ubuntu (and Win7, cuz why not)

 

How many watts do I need? Seasonic Focus thread, PSU misconceptions, protections explained, group reg is bad
