mATX Ryzen build

building a guest pc into a PowerMac G4 just for the hilarity of giving my friends what seems to be a really old pc for lan parties and such. PPP list:

I have a 1060 I'll be throwing into it already, and ryzen seems to be the best choice for the time being. Budget is $300 so I'm already over and I need some help here.

CPU needs to be either quad or hex core overclockable.

8GB RAM minimum - ryzen needs higher speeds iirc.

motherboard with vrm heatsinks, the G4 case isn't the most airflow friendly so bare vrms will likely get toasty.

SSD storage is a must, and 500gb seems like a good baseline with so many games getting so big.

Don't have a spare power supply but a good quality 400-500w will be nice, needs to be full modular as there's no room for extra cables.

Thoughts? Comments? Alternatives?

The G2 series was much better than the G3, for some reason. I would do the same. Also, I'd recommend a 2x8GB kit instead of a 2x4. 8GB of RAM is still acceptable but can quickly be not enough in most games/apps

 

edit: I missed the budget part. If you need overclockability, you need to spend more than 300. If you want it to be under 300, you either have to give up overclockability, or buy used. You can probably find a good 4790K/ram/board combo for like $250 all in, I'd say that's worth. Maybe even a 6600K or 6700K.

yeah, but money. Not sure if i can squeeze in 16gb with a $350 budget AND keep decent parts. CPU and mobo first, ram can be plopped in a year down the road.

Se edit. There are zero reasons that justify buying new at your price point. You simply will not get what you want. Good stuff costs money.

A 6600K or 6700K isn't what I'm looking for. When I mentioned OCing it was for gaming only. Powerful stuff costs money is what I think you mean. I could snag a server with a 6c12t xeon for $250 and put a 120gb ssd in it but I'm not. Ryzen is relatively low powered, the platform is cheap, I just don't know where to find deals save for micro center's $30 off cpu + mobo bundles.

I mean you don't have to OC to game. If what you listed is what you want, then you gotta pay for it. Micro Center is the best place for deals lol and you already have the cheapest RAM and MoBo. You can save $50 by going with a Ryzen 3, but that's about it.

It isn't, what I listed was the best I could do, I wanted alternatives, strats, tips, etc from others

I did... I said buy used, because if what you want is 4+ cores and overclockability, what you have is about the cheapest you can get new, unless you want to go with the R3 1200 or AM3(+) socket (which no one recommends).

Right, missed that, sorry about that! Z97 boards are kinda hard to come by, though, especially for low budget builds, aren't they? I'd love to get a 4th gen i5 or i7 but I'd rather not get a generic chinese mobo to run them off of

Which is why you got for a combo. CPU/board/ram. or at least cpu/board. I don't know what pricing is like near you though so Who knows how much you'll actually save
