I'm gathering parts for a small home server and wondered what the best drive setup would be? I will probably be using Proxmox for the OS and connecting to a NAS for mass storage and backups.

I currently have a Samsung 860 EVO SSD and a 2TB WD Red.

I was planning on using the SSD as the boot drive and the Red for local storage of VM's.

Would it be best to get another SSD and mirror the boot drive or is one SSD enough?

I wouldn't be too worried about iops for samba storage and a handful of idle vms.

I'd stick the vms on the SSD however, but you might want to consider what kind of redundancy scheme would work best for you from a data perspective.
