Suggestions for professional storage within budget?

Andrewf

After bringing my personal computer in to work I need to convert it into all work and no play. I’m going to take all used 6 TBs across my 4 HDDs and 3 SSDs (10TB total) and back it all up twice. Anyway, after that I’m going to WIPE EVERY POSSIBLE THING CLEAN (yes, I’m sure.)

Here is what I currently have INTERNALLY:

Asus Maximus Hero VI (6x SATA)

2 x 3TB HDDs ~5400-7200rpm for mass storage

1x 250GB Samsung SSD (C drive)

2x 240GB PNY SSDs

other irrelevant portable and NAS storage.

Here is what my budget is and what I THINK I SHOULD GET: $350 USD

1x possibly  3TB HDD and put them in some sort of RAID.

1x definitely 1TB SSD. (They’ve dropped in price, to ~$150)

Possibly another 240GB PNY SSD. And put them in some sort of fast cache raid. Maybe even a RAID 5.

Here are my questions:

Should I bother with a RAID for my C drive? I was thinking no, and put the SSDs into a RAID 1 for fast cache or something.

I really don’t know what an optimal RAID setup would be, so throw it on me. Tell me what I’m doing wrong. Either way I need to get a raid card as well for a PCIe slot.

Here is what I do.

Heavy Video Editing

Heavy Rendering

Intensive 3D and 2D Graphics in Blender, After Effects, Photoshop, etc.

I would do RAID 10 for your HDDs.  maybe RAID 0 if you give 0 fucks about your data long term.

I would stick with the same capacity drives as much as possible as it will play nicer with RAID, but its up to you.

for video editing and rending.  SSDs are probably better than HDDs.  maybe a bunch of 512GB SSDs in RAID 0?
