My current network set up at home has a pfsense router and a linux pc with a samba network share that I can access on LAN. I've set up open vpn using pfsense, which as far as I can tell works fine. I can ping the linux pc using its local IP from a laptop connecting through the VPN, and SSH into the machine. however I can't access the network share using file explorer.

Any ideas why or any potential solutions would be awesome. Thanks

There are a ton of things which could potentially cause issues in that setup, and I think you need to provide some more details.

For example, does anything else work when you are on the VPN? For example can you ping the SMB server?

Do VPN clients have their own network? If the answer is yes, does all firewalls (both the one in pfSense and the server's software firewall) allow that network to access the server?

Clients connecting through the vpn can ping the server, they can even ssh into it but I can't map the share as a network drive like I could on LAN, the clients are on a different subnet but I don't think this should have an effect (Im pretty new to this stuff though so I don't know)

Do you have the appropriate iptables or similar rules permitted for samba from other subnets?

Probably not, how would I check / change this?
