Hello guys,

I'm planning to purchase a new monitor and initially I was looking for 1440p Displays, however I stumbled on a refurbished HP Omen 35 which is in my price range.

My current GPU is 1060, however I plan to upgrade to 1080 in near future (not TI, due to cost).

So will it be a better investment to go with the Omen and switch between 3440 x 1440 and 2560x1080 or better stick to a 1440P monitor.

I play mainly WoW and Action RPG games.

Kind Regards,

Getting the highest quality monitor only makes sense if the refresh rate is also high. If its capped at 60 FPS on both then the question becomes different. Also just know a 1080 at 1440p will have a hard time pushing out high FPS maxed out in certain titles, but again it come back to refresh rate of monitor as well.

I would rather agree on what we share, than fight on what we don't. - Myself

I can play a heavily modded Fallout 4 on 1440p @ 60fps constant without any drops below 60 on my GTX 1080 no problem. 1440p @ 60 is really not that hard to do. Basically If I can't play a game on high-max 4k @60, I drop it down to 1440p and can max out games all day @ 60. Only until very recently have I had to worry about lowing ANY settings at 1440p (unless its a ubisoft game... ugh, terrible ports). I was looking at the Omen from HP myself, if you found a good deal and its in good condition, i'd say go for it. Especially if you are already planning to upgrade the GPU in the future.

Well the Omen is 21:9 so the resolution is kinda funky - 3440 x 1440 and 2560x1080 - which is somewhat lower in comparison to the standard 4K - 3840 x 2160 and 1440P - 2560 x 1440, so the load on the GPU will be lower too.

And yeah I plan to get a Assus Strix 1080 in before the end of the year, I'm only concern if switching between resolutions for gaming will not cause issues.

I'm currently with a standard 1080P 23 Inc monitor and when I set the resolution to 720P on windows it was horrible.

Thats completely title/settings dependent.

Yea, that resolution appears to be more of a "widescreen 1440p" IMO, rather then 4k. But it should still look good. And most modern games will support that resolution. worst case you are locked to 16:9 with some black bars on the sides. Once you have a 1080, you will most likely not need to switch between resolutions as it will run 3440 x 1440  no problem. In the meantime, there may be a little bit of image degradation on 2560x1080, But it is 45% less pixels, so almost an even 50% which would mean the pixels line up evenly (when they don't is when you get the blurry potato quality you saw going to 720p on a 1080p monitor. But also the high pixel density over 720 will reduce the blurring significantly. I don't think it will look anywhere near what you saw going from 1080 to 720

Oh, I forgot to add, that monitor has g-sync, so even if you can't push 60 fps at 3440x1440, it will still stay synced and look buttery smooth (down to about 40-45fps at least). So you can always keep it at it's native resolution and not worry as much
