Hi, guys. This might seem like a noob question, but Intel has always confused me.

if I see a cpu, how do I tell which chipset it is compatible with? For example, 8th gen cpus need Z370 motherboards. How about 7th gen and other gen? If I search up any cpu on Intel, the information list never tell me the required chipset of the cpu. I’m disgusted by this fact.

i got a 8th gen i5 840 once, but accidentally bought a z170 mobo, and that is because Intel did not tell me it required a 300 series chipset.

i just want to know: how do you find the right motherboard for any CPU?

sorryfor the bad English

PCPartPicker. Also, 8th gen CPUs dont NEED Z370, that's just 1 chipset that is compatible.

Pc parts picker doesn’t help. I want to know:: which GEN cpu is compatible with which CHIPSET

the chipset requirement is written on the cpu package but not the specs list online

If you mean on the page for the product, then yes, it doesn't.

However, if you add a part to a list, and then go to another section (say you put a CPU in a list, and you go to the motherboard section), it will automatically show you all parts that are compatible.

bruh, literally just type in "what motherboard is compatible with said cpu." And they actually all do tell what type you need

Head on over to Intel ARK (google it) and look up the CPU in question. On the left side of the specifications page, there will be a tab that says "Compatible Products" and there it will list all of the compatible chipsets for that specific CPU.

Edit: Note that some chipsets that were released for the previous generation of the CPU in question but are still compatible may require a BIOS update which may require that previous generation CPU to complete.

Its more then common knowledge by now that you cant use 8th gen cpus on 6 & 7th gen motherboards

For the 8th gen cpus you need a b360/h310/h370/z370 motherboard

I've seen plenty of threads here about this exact question aswell
